She was born in Laurel County, Kentucky on January 23, 1913 the daughter of Rev. Benjamin and Bessie (Roark) Brown. Minerva was a member of Freedom Baptist Church. In 1931 in Laurel County, Kentucky she married Wiley Gaines, who preceded her in death in 1939; on January 12, 1957 in Brookville, Indiana she married Frank Retherford, who preceded her in death in 1985. She is survived by two daughters, Doris Cox of Shandon and Dean Robinson and her husband Vernon of Hamilton; nine grandchildren, Larry (Diane) Cox, Darrell Cox, Rick (Barb) Cox, Terry (Debbie) Cox, Linda (Eugene) Chesnut, Ray Cox, Lisa Hess, Rev. Michael (Sheri) Gentry, and Brenda (Donald) Marcum; and numerous great- and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Billie Harrington; three brothers, Willard, Vernon, and Dan Brown; and three sisters, Minnie Dykes, Gracie Marcum, and Hazel Evans. Funeral services will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue, on Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Jacob Flannery officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Golden Years Nursing Center, 2436 Old Oxford Highway, Hamilton 45013.
