    3. Ferby and others....... Since I research these files quite often onsite at NARA in D.C., here is the rundown on how to research the pension records. Everything prior to, but excluding, World War I is located at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. From World War I to present day, records are located in St. Louis, MO. The most common request I receive is for Civil War records. Union records are located in Washington, D.C. Copies of pension records are from the original records. Depending on what State the regiment served depends on what medium the service records are copied, whether original record versus microfilm. The easiest way that I found to remember original versus microfilm is that everything North of the border states are copied from the original records.....everything South, including the border states are on microfilm. Pension records are located in Washington and Service records for Kentucky are located in both Washington, D.C. and Frankfort, KY. As far as Confederate records are concerned, pensions are located at the State level, not necessarily the state from which they served, but most likely are found in the State in which the individual last resided. Kentucky confederate service records are located in Washington, D.C. as well as in Frankfort, KY. If anyone has any questions on researching military records, please feel free to ask. Hope this helps. Beth Adams Independent Professional Researcher Washington, D.C.
