    3. Jess you proved that to me with my gg grandfather John Simpson's Revolutionary War stone. It is what is on top of the ground, not what is beneath it, that keeps the memory alive. 3. Jess love your stories. Jesus is Lord and is coming again. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jess Wilson<mailto:jswlsn@prtcnet.org> To: KYLAUREL-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:KYLAUREL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 28, 2005 8:02 AM Subject: [KYLAUREL-L] HOW I BURIED UNCLE HARVE, HOW I BURIED UNCLE HARVE, Part 1. Of the condensed version. When I was a lad we seldom heard of a funeral home. When there was a death in the neighborhood, we didn't call a funeral home or a local flower shop while trying to figure out how much money we would be expected to spend. Instead, we began to wonder where the mattocks, shovels and the broad adz were and what carpenter we could get to make a coffin and who should lay out, wash and dress the corpse. Someone went into the woods and selected a long slim sapling to cut the exact length of the deceased's body. A notch was cut a distance from one end to show how wide. This was given to the carpenter who would cut another longer stick to show the grave diggers how long and wide the grave should be dug. Other men would gather at some barn or mill shed to help the carpenter build a coffin and a wooden vault box. The women and girls would gather at some home to cook and sew. As I grew up I was in turn a tool finder, a stick toter, a water boy and a helper to the rough carpenters who made the vault box from rough oak lumber. I eventually became a helper to the finish carpenter who made the coffin. The coffin was padded inside with quilted-cotton batts and lined with satin cloth. The outside of the coffin was covered with "grave cloth", an imprinted grey muslin that local merchants kept on the top shelf in their stores. We had a well defined and recognized knowledge as to what tasks were men's work and what was expected from the distaff side of the households. Digging the grave and the making of the lumber part of the coffins were indisputably recognized as being within the jurisdiction of the male members, cooking necessary for the burial gatherings and sewing of garments for the deceased or members of the bereaved family to wear to the funeral were well within the realm of the women. When it came to lining the coffin and covering it with cloth there was a definite territorial conflict. The women would do what cutting and sewing they could at the house. The cloth would then be sent to where the coffin was being made by some girl-child with a firm command to "hurry right back". The carpenter, all to often unfamiliar with working with cloth, was left to do the best he could. It was in this nitch that I was able to gain recognition as a useful young member of our society. When Uncle Harve died the family asked me to make his coffin. More next time. ==== KYLAUREL Mailing List ==== To subscribe or unsubscribe to this list send an email to: KYLAUREL-L-request@rootsweb.com<mailto:KYLAUREL-L-request@rootsweb.com> In the MESSAGE type the one word .... 3. HOW I BURIED UNCLE HARVE, Part 1.

    1. NIMROD, THE MIGHTY HUNTER
    2. Jess Wilson
    3. NIMROD, THE MIGHTY HUNTER Nimrod, the mighty hunter, is mentioned in the Old Bible. In my younger days I was no Nimrod but I did have a unique way of catching a young rabbit. My father had a field which he planted in soy beans to make fodder for our milk cows. The field was near the creek. Along the creek bank was a thicket of alder bushes and willows. There was a path between the thicket and a woven wire fence. Late in the afternoon, rabbits would come out of the thicket, crawl under the fence to eat the young soy bean plants. I would walk softly along the path until I spied a rabbit out in the bean field. I would whistle softly to attract the rabbits attention as I crossed the fence which put me between the rabbit and its safety in the thicket along the creek. It was a long way across the field to a hiding place.. Home and safety to the poor little rabbit was the thicket where he was born, not somewhere beyond the soy bean patch. As I would whistle softly the rabbit would run to one side or the other and start to run toward the thicket. I would step over. The rabbit would stop and start the other way and I would step that way and head him off. When the rabbit finally decided to make a run for the far side of the field I would give chase and scream at the top of my voice. This would confuse the rabbit and it would try to return to the thicket by the creek and again I would move over to remain between the rabbit and the safety of the thicket. Soon the rabbit would tire and I would be able to catch it. As to hunting with a gun, I claim 100% success, I shot at one rabbit with a shot gun and killed it. As to squirrel hunting, I once went hunting with my father-in-law. He had a shot gun and went directly up the hill. I had a .22 rifle and went into the woods and climbed a low ridge following a path. I saw a squirrel on a limb directly over head. It was gnawing on a nut and was facing away from me. I raised my gun and fired. The animal fell at my feet and I put it in my coat pocket and continued along the path. Evidently, my bullet had only knock it out for it began scrambling in my jacket pocket. I backed up to a tree and brained the poor animal with my gun butt and swore to never go hunting again.

    2. Mr. Arvel George, The person you are referring to as a lady is boss of the Clay Co. list now. We are letting her run it her way. And since your message isn't of a genealogical nature she wouldn't have allowed you post it there. So be careful about your posts lest we also have problems here. A Laurel Countian by birth.
