WHY CLAY COUNTY IS DRY Visitors often ask me why my home county is "dry"' as far as the legal sale of alcohol is concerned. My answer is three told, the church people, the bootleggers and my father. In 1933, when the newly elected president, Franklin D. Roosevelt spearheaded a successful effort to repeal the Prohibition Amendment to the constitution, the next thing that happened was inevitable. Clay County had its share of licker stores. Cousin Carl "Puny" Maggard built Puny's Playhouse and Oscar Smith changed his garage into a whiskey store at nearby Burning Springs. In the meanwhile, the Kentucky legislature passed a local option law that provided that the voters in a county or a precinct of a county could petition for an election to test the will of a majority of voters as to their wishes, concerning the sale of alcohol beverages. It was not long until the church people petitioned for a local option election. With the best wishes and some unpublicized help from the bootleggers, John Barleycorn was given the heave-ho by a vote ot three to one. However, someone in the county clerk's office managed to get the election voided on some technicality or other and Clay County continued to be counted among the wet areas in Kentucky . In due course another petition and another election and the people of Clay County voted five to one to forbid the legal sale of whiskey. Again that someone or several someones managed, somehow, to void that election. For a third time an election was held. This time the vote was an undisputable, ten to one for the "drys."' My father hauled "dry" voters to the poles in each election. After delivering the last car full of voters to their respective homes he stopped at Oscar Smith's whiskey store and bought himself a fifth of good Kentucky Bourbon. I did not ask him what his motive was but no doubt he would have answered that he had too many sons and nephews who might be led astray if alcohol continued to be legal in our neighborhood .

Harold, My name is Betty Wages from Corbin, Ky. I can tell you how to get to the Oak Ridge Cemetery and part of it was given by some Treadway's. If you know Corbin. Get on Cumberland Parkway. Go to Sonic Restaurant. The Road right beside Sonic is 1629 ( Ohler Road.) Go about 1 mile and a half more or less, you will see a Blue house. Take a left on the Road after you pass the Blue house that will be Oak Ridge Road. Go up the hill and there will be a Y . Take the right Y. You will see the Church on the left.. Pass the Church. There are 2 small Trailer Courts. There is a gravel Road between the Trailer Courts to the Oak Ridge Cemetery. Mayme (Treadway) Black is a good Friend of ours. I'm not sure what Treadway gave some of the land for the Cemetery but I am sure that Mayme would know. Do you know Mayme? Our e-mail address is jasperwages@kih.net I'm almost sure there were some Treadways buried there. I also know where Elisha Treadway ( Mayme Treadway Black's ) Father and Mother was buried. If there is any other information that we can help with please let us know. AFTER 21 YEARS I MEET MY WARD. Early one morning as I walked the less than 200 feet from our back door to the Battle Abbey, I heard the haunting call of a Mourning Dove, whose voice must sound very much like its old world cousin, the Turtledove. This called to my mind snatches of some verses that begins, "Rise up, my love, my fair one and come away. For low, the winter is passed." The verses end with ---"the voice of the turtle is heard in our land." As I could not recall all the lines I attempted to find the verses in the Old Testament. Failing to find them I went on to other things. Later, I happened to be passing the home of a minister that I consult occasionally about such a matter, so I stopped at his house. In our conversation he happened to say, "Sherry, is now 21 years old." This exploded in my mind the fact that the child he was talking about had been born my ward, and in all these years I had never seen the child. I had been appointed guardian of her mother before she was born, and as such was required to sign a consent when the minister and his wife, her foster parents, wanted to take the child out of the state. It all happened this way: The child's mother, a daughter of a cousin of mine, was mentally retarded. As such she and a sister became a problem for the social welfare workers when the girls became of child-bearing age. They arranged and I agreed to be appointed guardian of the girls for the purpose of having them operated on, a then new operation that required a minimum sized incision. The operation was scheduled for a Monday. On the Friday before there was a newspaper story of a federal indictment that had been made in the "interest" of a girl, somewhere down south, against some parties who had similarly had her operated on. From that time on no doctor will perform such an operation. As could have been foretold, Sherry was born and hidden from the social workers by her family. When found some weeks later, the child was almost dead. It was placed with the minister and his wife. On a return visit, I finally saw the child that had been my ward. Sherry, at 21, has the mind and manners of a two year old. In size she is about like a normal ten year old. They told me that she was blind for a while after they first got her. She was eight years old before she could walk and even now she waddles when she walks. Her feet are very flat and can only walk when she has shoes on. She does not have any childhood playmates that visit her at home but she does go to child ca! re. She babbles and cannot talk, but is a very happy and affectionate child and is a joy to her adopted parents, who will always have a little girl. With me when I visited them was my sister-in-law Beulah. As the parents and I talked she showed Beulah around the house much as a normal child would. Now, whenever I hear the haunting call of the Morning Dove, I will be wondering, "Those many years ago, what difference would it have made, if the social workers and I had acted one week earlier?" For lo, the winter has passed, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds has come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land." Song of Solomon, Chapter 2, Verses 11 and 12. JESS WILSON
Ferby and others....... Since I research these files quite often onsite at NARA in D.C., here is the rundown on how to research the pension records. Everything prior to, but excluding, World War I is located at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. From World War I to present day, records are located in St. Louis, MO. The most common request I receive is for Civil War records. Union records are located in Washington, D.C. Copies of pension records are from the original records. Depending on what State the regiment served depends on what medium the service records are copied, whether original record versus microfilm. The easiest way that I found to remember original versus microfilm is that everything North of the border states are copied from the original records.....everything South, including the border states are on microfilm. Pension records are located in Washington and Service records for Kentucky are located in both Washington, D.C. and Frankfort, KY. As far as Confederate records are concerned, pensions are located at the State level, not necessarily the state from which they served, but most likely are found in the State in which the individual last resided. Kentucky confederate service records are located in Washington, D.C. as well as in Frankfort, KY. If anyone has any questions on researching military records, please feel free to ask. Hope this helps. Beth Adams Independent Professional Researcher Washington, D.C. thanks, Jess! would you please see if you have a pension file for Jesse Burton of Rockcastle Co. KY? Jesse and Margaret Brooks Burton were living in RC KY 1860, so he may have enlisted in that county. Jesse born ca1815 Pulaski Co. KY and died 1863 in CW. Jesse would have been abt 45 yrsold when he enlisted. thanx very, very much! charlotte Jess Wilson <jswlsn@prtcnet.org> wrote: TO ALL ,Kentucky passed a law in 1912, grantig a pension to confederate soldiers that were residing in the state. I would love your notes on the family, while this is not my line they do merge with the Parsleys. I'm trying to help out a cousin of mine with this line. The Parsleys also have children being born with no husband in the house at the time, but marriage records. My 3x great-grandfather seems to have fallen off the face of the earth after his marriage but still had three children after that. Any way thank you very much for your help.
