    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Tompkins, Wilborn, Morgan, Faris Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EBB.2ACE/2585.1 Message Board Post: Updates: Have received several emails with feedback about this article. Carol Wyatt, a Storm and Morgan descendant with many indirect ties to the Tompkins, writes and makes an excellent point about Charles Storm Tompkins: “I remember when someone brought up the name Charles Storm Thompkins and Andrew or Andy I said to myself, those are Storm names. Not Charles in particular but the fact that Storm was the middle name and Andrew was a Storm name too.” I agree it’s an interesting question. Why was Charles was given the middle name Storm, was he related somehow to the Isaac Storm family, who married into and lived next door to our Tompkins clan? In digging a bit further, we find that the Storms also spent some time in Carter county Tennessee, making a possible connection to the Wilborns or Tompkins, if Eli is truly connected to the Benjamin and Polly Hampton Tompkins line. Was Elizabeth related to the Storms? Was Charles named after relatives or good family friends? Sally Federer, connected to Reece Ellis Tompkins, seems to have found proof that indeed Elizabeth Wilborn did marry Dudley Faris, revealing that it is Elizabeth and Burnetta Tompkins residing with Dudley in 1860. Elizabeth then went by Tompkins later on. Here is that census: July 20, 1860, Laurel county Kentucky, Page 102 Dudley Farris m 60 ky farm laborer Elizabeth Farris f 55 ky Viva Farris f 11 ky Bernetty Farris f 18 ky Sally writes: The "Laurel County Kentucky Marriage Index 1826-1937" shows a marriage between Dudley Faris and M.E. Thompkins 29 Feb 1859. IF "M.E." is Eli's ex-wife the initials probably stand for Malinda Elizabeth, like her daughter. But, what IF they stood for Martha Elizabeth? That might explain "Martha Betty/Beatty.” Perhaps at some point in her life some family member referred to her as "Martha Betty"... I wrote to Laurel County for the marriage record of Dudley Faris and M.E. Tompkins... Did you notice that the date was 29 Feb 1859? 1859 was not a leap year so there was not a Feb 29th.” Carol Wyatt also points out: “When Daniel Morgan married to Celia McFarlin in 1871 (yes 1871 I know they are listed in the 1870 census together) he listed in Elizabeth Thompkins house. When Sarah Thompkins married Wombles, she the dau. of Malinda, who is dau of Elizabeth and Eli married in 1871, she too married in the house of Elizabeth Thompkins. So, she was still called Thompkins in 1871. “ Maxine Morgan, a descendant of Nancy Tompkins Morgan, writes: “I am sure in the back of my mind I once had a note about Andy Tompkins and Eli Morgan going to Arkansas together and preparing place to move their families, and then going back to move their families, in 1868, I believe -- Franklin Co. Ark. Wonder if his mother would have moved with them?”

    3. Roaten How is this line connected to our Forbis family? There could be other links from Elizabeth Forbis Ferree/Free Jones. Elizabeth and Capt. James Jones stayed in Yadkin NC. but some of the children moved to Kentucky and Tennessee. Through this line we have Speers \Spears and a lot of Jones. Elizabeth's brothers James, Robert, John and George E. Forbis Jr. came out with Daniel Boone to Ky. and by 1783 had sold there land in NC. In the 1790 census James was in Green County, Robert and in Henry Co. John or George E. Jr. I believe was killed in the battle of Estills Defeat ( No Prof) and I have no information on John or George E. 3. Jess, The next time you go to Berea, take that dulcimer and get Warren May to restring it for you. He is the expert in your section of Kentucky. I belong to the Monday Night Dulcimer Players here in Georgetown, Ky. We meet on Monday evenings at 6:30 at the United Methodist Church on US 25 and welcome all who would like to join us. Don't ever quit. When I purchased my dulcimer from Warren back in the early 1990s, I said I probably would not be able to play because of my arthritic hands. He encouraged me and gave me a hardwood stick tuner and said I could. This is my second group of players and we have such a good time. If someone has to quit for a while, they usually come back. We have married couples who are players too. We are like one big happy family. Come on Jess, get that dulcimer down off the wall and get it fixed. Then an acquaintance of mine earned appointment in the Peace Corp to, I think, Indonesia. Anyway be brought back some native mahogomy wood which he made into some dulcimers. 2. Beautiful beautiful story, and life of Emily, Jess, thank you. And those who catch the stories and share them with us are beautiful stars also. You have enriched our genealogy and our heritage immeasurably by sharing your memories and stories with us all. 1. TO CATCH A STAR.
    2. Jess Wilson
    3. TO CATCH A STAR. By Jess Wilson Emily Muncy was a little girl when she came from Virginia to Kentucky in the late fall of 1833. Emily, then nine years old, was an orphan. She traveled with a family that had "adopted" her. Some think that Muncy was the name of her adopted family and that she was not a Muncy. However, as Emily is a name that appears in other Muncy families, I am inclined to believe that she was a Muncy. As she grew into a remarkable woman and I am also apart Muncy, I like to think of Emily as a cousin of some degree. Emily Muncy was about 19 or 20 years old when she married Anderson Bowles. Their descendants are now legion. Emily appears to have been a very strong woman of slight build. Her grandson, Green Flannery told me that his grandmother once rode a horse, sidesaddle, from Abram's Store at Big Hill to where Ray Wilson lived on Sturgeon Creek, carrying a turning- plow in her lap. She served as a midwife in the area where she lived "near the Sand Flats at the mouth of Grassy where the Chickasaw plums and the chinquapins grew." I don't know how near but I hope it was near enough for me to use this quote from her great grandson, Lloyd Bowles of Florence, Kentucky. During his lifetime, Carter Mahaffey of Green Hall told me "My grandmother Bowles was Emily Muncy. She came to Kentucky in a wagon when she was a little girl. They were camping by their wagon the night the stars fell." The night of November 13, 1833, when there was a brilliant shower of meteorites, must have been a fearful night for timid or superstitious souls. John Gilbert and Henry Sizemore were hunting on Rock House Creek (now Leslie County) that night. Although they were men that probably were not afraid of even the Devil himself, nevertheless, they placed their powder horns some distance from where they slept for fear the fire from Heaven would cause them to explode. Many feared that it was "The End of Time." Someone told me a beautiful story about that night at the wagon camp on the road from Virginia to Kentucky. How often does it happen that we see in the action of a child the quality of the adult they will become?. It should have been a revelation to the family that night that the little girl that traveled with them would grow into the brave and fearless woman she became. Emily was running around the camp, holding out her little apron, trying to catch a star. I have a picture of her that my half first cousin, once removed, Howard Wilson, loaned me. She may not have caught a star in her apron but in the picture you can see that she had stars in her eyes. Sitting on a shelf in this room is a small, cheap cream pitcher. Inside the pitcher is a note which reads: "My great, grandmother, Emily Muncy Bowles, was a famous midwife (granny woman). This pitcher was payment from a very poor woman she delivered of a baby one cold winter night. She gave the pitcher to my mother, Pearl Mahaffey Wilson-Baker when she was born April 1900 . Loaned to Jess Wilson, to be returned to Howard Wilson." Note by Jess: Pearl was a niece of Carter McHaffey. Her first marriage was to my half first cousin, Clifton Wilson. Her second marriage was to Bill Baker.
