The restoration of the Jarvis Jackson/13th Street/Breastworks Hill Cemetery in London,KY is now completed. The documentation books have been given to the Laurel Co. Historical Society located in the basement of the old City Hall in London,KY. During the restoration all the fieldstones were reset,101 limestone markers with no inscription were placed on burials where GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar) had shown ground disturbance and burial shafts, and approximately 150 inscribed stones were reset, repaired, and cleaned. The documentation includes "before" and "after" photos, and a survey sheet of each stone with a description of the condition, dimensions, type of stone, repairs and inscription. Some of the original listing information have been corrected in the documentation, some information has been added, and an Excel spreadsheet listing has been included in the documentation. One additional Civil War veteran was identified,John Taylor, KY Infantry(Union). US flags were placed on all the veteran burial sites. Thanks to those from London,KY who came by to check on us and give us additional clues and information. Surnames: Tompkins, Godsey, Wilborn Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EBB.2ACE/2585.2 Message Board Post: Busting the Tecumseh Myth: Finally got to the bottom of the myth surrounding Eli being connected somehow to Tecumseh. Someone sent me an article published in a Jamestown, Tennessee paper, February 23, 1949, detailing a story of a quilt that was made by an Elizabeth Tompkins Phillips, touting her as “a granddaughter of Tecumseh.” Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Tompkins, who was himself the son of Polly Hampton and J. Benjamin Tompkins, who some researchers believe may be the parents of our Eli. Refer back to the article in the section on Eli’s parents for more on this couple. As far as there being any connection to Tecumseh here, I’m afraid it is false. Have done some research, and sources online are happy to tell us that Tecumseh was actually white, and that he was J. Benjamin Tompkins! This is some kind of family myth that got passed down in the Joseph Tompkins branch of the J. Benjamin line. And clearly this is a tall tale designed and passed down by someone who may have been trying to cover something up, such as being part native, by making the native part look not only quite infamous but white! Whatever the reason for the myth, there is no truth in it. No historian would ever vouch for this story that J. Benjamin and some of his siblings were temporarily raised by the Shawnee tribe and then given back to their white parents, and that Tecumseh was the only way that the tribe members could pronounce Tompkins!
Greetings. Does anyone know anything about a Caleb Henson, of Clay Co KY, who was killed in the War of 1812. Caleb died before Sept 13, 1814. A James Henson was the administrator of his estate per Deed Book A, pg 112 Clay Co KY. Thanks for 'any' information on Caleb Henson. 'R.E.' Hinson
I'm a native of Laurel Co I was born in 1933 and went to school at East Bernstadt until 1945. Tom Durham was custodian while I attended E B School. He is most likely the one buried at the Snuffer Cemetery. His youngest child Clayton, was the age of my older brother Charles who was born in 1930, his youngest daughter, Mildred was about the age of my sister Imogene who was born in 1929. He had older children, I believe one called Tommy, and others. You should find this Tom Durham in the 1940 Laurel Co. census, and probably in other census. I hope this info is of some help to someone. Sincerely, Frances Howard Hickey Roane Co TN
