Yes, I am positive he was born in Knox County, Kentucky. No, I do not know his parents names, that is why I was trying to locate a census with him on it. I do know he married Lura Hammon(d)s in Whitley County, KY then at some point, moved to Bell County. As to Ellis being a nickname, I really wouldn't know. That is the name on his tombstone in Pineville cemetary, and all relatives have only ever referred to him as Ellis, so I am assuming that is his legal name.
