I remember hearing about this cemetery but I can't remember the name of it. That area out through there is called Apple Grove. Weren't there supposed to be some old Civil War graves there? Mary, Thanks for "Apple Cove" name of area where cemetery is... That is interesting as I wonder if Richland Creek might have changed course sometime between 1920's and now.... Two reasons: First, my mother told me that her father, William A Hinkle, had an apple orchard... and that she was raised in last house before Richland Creek and Cumberland River. That the original road deadended when the old bridge over the creek washed away and the "new" one was built further up creek on "Black" property... (Around 1918, the flood waters did reach their home.. Flooding their first floor & they stayed on second... they moved soon afterwards and finally left Barbourville in 1924..).(My mother, born 1903, died this year in California at age 99) I thought until recently that the Hinkle property was probably under the current floodwall ... now I wonder if the 30+ acres owned by Peter Hinkle and Silas Dishman at the turn of the century, might have extended further West of Main St.and Cumberland River than originally thought.... Secondly, William's dad, Capt Peter Hinkle was supposedly buried on Hinkle property.... The recently uncovered cemetery with the "Civil War" graves, at "Apple Cove" also included a large, readable gravestone for Capt Peter Hinkle and MANY dissolved limestone markers plus the new CW markers placed by the Barbourville Amer Legion Post 69. Up until May of this year, when I found out about Peter's grave being in this "Apple Cove" graveyard and since I am missing my mother's baby brother grave, and several Hinkle relatives that died before 20's.... I have a gut feeling that some on the unreadable tomestones in this recently uncovered cemetery are for these missing relatives.... I am trying to get information on what the Am Legion has documented about this cemetery but have been unable to make contact with anyone that has been working on the project... ANY help appreciated!
