>From the Barbourville Mountain Advocate Online Addition Thursday, October 17, 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituaries Rose (Carnes) Woolum Mrs. Rose (Carnes) Woolum, 93, of Walker, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002 in the Knox County Hospital. She was born July 11, 1909 in Knox County to the late Jim Leonard Carnes and Euphemia (Mills) Carnes. On Oct. 10, 1935, she united in marriage with Charles Woolum, who preceded her in death. She was a member of the Salem Baptist Church and a former school teacher. She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Gambrel of Walker; four sons, Elmer Woolum and wife Vernice of Barbourville, Byron Woolum and wife Louise, Jerry Woolum and wife Sharon and Don Woolum and wife Diana, all of Walker; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002 with the Rev. Teddy Collins, the Rev. Donnie Mills and the Rev. Lonnie Collett officiating. Burial was in the Mills Cemetery. Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Monnie Curtis Bush Mr. Monnie Curtis Bush, 89, of Hammond, formerly of Keokee, Va, passed away at his home Friday, Oct. 11. He was a son of the late Cammie and Cornie Bush. He was a member of the Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Keokee, Va. and a former employee of the Dayton Board of Education, Dayton, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Estelle Jane (Blair) Bush; one daughter, Amarita Mills and husband Ben, all of Hammond; one brother, David Bush of Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Ruby Kenneth of Dayton, Ohio, Hortense Clarkson Dryden and Lydia Griffith of Franklin, Ohio; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 at the Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Keokee, Va. with Elder Roy Flanary officiating. Burial was in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap, Va. Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Minnie Engle Minnie Engle, 94, of Goldens Creek, Barbourville, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 in the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin. She was a daughter of the late Frank and Betty Rhoades Engle, born to them on Jan. 1, 1908 in Knox County. She was a former employee of the Knox County Hospital and a member of the Locust Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted in Hopper Funeral Home Chapel Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 with the Rev. Arnold Petrey and the Rev. Frank Elliott officiating. Burial was in the Wilson Cemetery on Goldens Creek. Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Irene Thelma (Reese) Owens Mrs. Irene Thelma (Reese) Owens, 80, of Bailey Switch, the widow of Gilbert Owens, passed away Monday, Oct 14, 2002 at her home. She was born in Knox County on May 20, 1922 to the late Bradly Reese and Sudie (Cooper) Reese. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and a former employee of Tremco in Barbourville. She is survived by three daughters, Doris Davis and husband Charles of Hamilton, Ohio, Linda Smith and husband Gilbert of Gray and Barbara Norman and husband Robert of Corbin; three sons, Jimmy Owens and wife Carol of Somerset, Ronnie Owens of Norwood, Ohio and Leroy Owens and wife Gracie of Winchester; five sisters, Bea Parker of Pennsylvania, Sissy Reese, also of Pennsylvania, Loraine Peace of Corbin, Wilma Patterson of Dayton, Ohio and Sadie Reese of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Marlon Reese and wife Robbie of Norwood, Ohio; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, Oct. 16 with the Rev. Garrett Garland and the Rev. Bill Wolfe officiating. Burial was in the Campbell Cemetery at Gray. Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Arnold Castle Arnold Castle, 50, of Berea, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. He was born in Knox County on Nov. 29, 1951, the son of the late William (Bill) and Jewlette Black Castle. He was a former employee of Boonesboro Quarry. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Lear Castle; one son, Donnie (Audrey) Castle of Winchester; one daughter, Julie (Chris) Wright of Berea; two brothers, Dave (Lisa) Castle of Ravenna and Curt (Tammy) Castle of Ford; five sisters, Martha (Tilford) Bowling of London, Wilma (Grover) Abner of Manchester, Lynn (Roger) Jones of Winchester, Paulette (Rocky) Whitehead of Berea and Rosa Lee (Ray) Jones of Richmond; four grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Columbia Lear of Richmond; one brother-in-law, Ronnie Lear of Nicholasville. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 7 at the Combs, Parsons and Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Grover Abner officiating. Burial was in the Arnolds Acres Cemetery. Charles Foley Black Mr. Charles Foley Black, 71, of Flat Lick, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 in the VA Medical Center in Lexington. He was a son of the late Tom and Hannah Partin Black, born on June 22, 1931 in Bell County. He was a former sawmill worker and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his brother, William H. Black of Flat Lick. Funeral services were conducted in the Knox Funeral Home Chapel Sunday, Oct. 13 with the Rev. John Partin officiating. Burial was in the Hammons Cemetery at Flat Lick. Arrangements were under the direction of Knox Funeral Home. Hazel Rush Hazel Rush, 92, of London, passed away Sunday at the Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Elmer Rush. She is survived by her children, Elvis Rush, Doris Reams, Elmer Rush Jr., Kelly Rush, Kenneth Rush and Roy Dean Rush, all of London; her brother, Willie Cobb of Barbourville. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday in the House-Rawlings Funeral Home with the Rev. Denvis Rush and Britt Carroll officiating. Burial was in the A.R. Dyche Memorial Park.
