Obits from the Barbourville Mountain Advocate Online Thursday, January 16, 2003 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett Evans, 87, of Barbourville, the daughter of the late Ben and Sudie Anderson Bennett, passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 in Barbourville Nursing Home. She was a homemaker and member of the First Pentecostal Church in Barbourville. During World War II, she was a riveter at Hudson Motor Car Company, which manufactured aircraft. Her husband Amos Evans preceded her in death. She is survived by her brother, William E. Bennett and wife Jeanette of Goldens Creek; two grandsons and two great grandchildren. Services were conducted in Knox Funeral Home Chapel Sunday, Jan. 12. with the Rev. Ronnie Ball and the Rev. Sylvester Dunn officiating. Burial was in Evans Cemetery at Kingtown. Arrangements were under the direction of Knox Funeral Home. Mr. Virgil Hammons, 63, of Girdler, Ky. passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 in Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin. He was a son of the late Robert and Mettie Belle Hicks Hammons. He was a member of Dripping Springs Baptist Church and a farmer. He is survived by his sister, Pearl Hammons Goley. Services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 12 at Dripping Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Ricky Broughton and the Rev. Crit Messer officiating. Burial was in Hammons Cemetery at Girdler. West, 92, of Artemus, the son of the late Blly West and Sally Tuggle Myrick West, passed away Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 in Knox County Hospital. He was a member of Artemus Baptist Church and a former Knox County school teacher. He is survived by his wife Amy Bays Gibson West of Artemus; a daughter, Janice Vokurka and husband John of Bowling Green; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; his brothers, Howard West and wife Nell of Artemus and Charles West of Dearborn, Mich. Services were conducted in Hopper Funeral Home Chapel Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 with the Rev. James Vandy and the Rev. John Partin officiating. Burial was in Barbourville Cemetery. Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The Rev. Cecil Miracle, 73, of Coldiron, Ky passed away Jan. 7, 2003 in Merritt Island, Fla. with myeloma. He was a former pastor of Fourmile Pentecostal Church and Harlan business man. He was the son of the late James and Gladys Miracle. He is survived by his wife Anna Daniel Miracle; daughters, Sheba Parson and husband Robby of Merritt Island, Fla., Phoenicia Puckett and husband David of Savannah, Ga and Bethany Ramsey of Vienna, Va.; a brother, James Miracle and wife Opal of Harlan; a daughter-in-law, Bernice Saylor Miracle of Barbourville. Services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at Mt. Pleasant Funeral Home with the Revs. Ed Huston, Jeff Roberts and Kenneth Slusher officiating. Burial was in Saylor Cemetery at Pathfork. Parks, 85, of McKendree Village, Hermitage, Tenn., formerly of Barbourville, passed away Jan. 9, 2003. She was a former postmistress for Union College in Barbourville and an employee of the United Methodist Board of Education. She is survived by her husband Dr. S. Laws Parks; her daughters, Barbara Umbach of Murphy, N.C., Ellen Bourne of Natick, Mass.; one grandson; two great granddaughters. Services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 in Woodlawn Chapel of Roses with Dr. John Collette, the Rev. Jim Robinson, McKendree and Associate Minister, the Rev. Linda Johnson officiating.
