The 2 of them went west during the civil war; made enough money mining that they bought equipment and hired a large crew to "build grade" (i.e., prepare the ground) for the intercontinental railroad. They were present at the driving of the Golden Spike near Promentory Point in Utah in 1869. My gr'gr'grandfather was Madison Lewellen, born 1844 in Barbourville KY. I'm guessing his cousin, Jack Cox, would have been somewhat close in age, and from the same gen'l area. I have come to a brick wall in getting the names of Madison's parents. In the census of 1880 he reported them as having been born in NC. We don't know if Jack Cox is in your family line, but if you should run across that name (or John Cox) perhaps the above info on Madison Lewellen will help you put together more pieces of the puzzle. Likewise, if you come across a connection to a Lewellen that would give me clues to Madison's parentage, I would like to hear from you! Can also write to me at Knan75@msn.com
