His wife, Mollie, was a GRAY. Have not yet found their wedding record; however, Elijah SMITH was married at least once prior to his marriage to Mollie GRAY which you can see from the census. I have always been "sort of" interested in "an" Elijah SMITH for a couple of reasons. For example, on the 1880 Knox Co. there is this listing: Dwelling 446-449 HOPKINS, Melvina, 35, head, single, b. VA; father b. VA; mother b. TN (actually Lavina/Melvina/Viney was born in Hancock Co., TN) . .Sarah J., 8, dau, b. KY . .Nancy, 6, dau, b. KY . .Martha, 2, dau, b. KY SMITH, Elijah, 30, farms, boarder, divorced, b. KY; parents b. KY NOTE: This Viney/Melvina HOPKINS had a long-term relationship with my g-grandfather's youngest brother, Alexander William TAYLOR. They had something like 9-10 children together in a commonlaw relationship. He generally shows up with their sons and she with their daughters the way it is here. If this Elijah SMITH is the one you are seeking, then he would have been abt. 10 years older than the latter census records show. On the one side of Melvina HOPKINS is Dwelling 444-447 which is Franklin GAMBREL, 70 with wife, Rosanner, 68 and they have a Melvina SMITH, age 28, at home and a cousin living with them. Don't know if this Melvina SMITH is a sister or other relative to the Elijah SMITH, age 30 with Melvina HOPKINS. On the other side of Melvina HOPKINS is Dwelling 447-450 which is Larkin HUBBARD who was married to Sarah A. MERIDA-MEREDITH. This is the daughter of Mahala TAYLOR, b. 1822 who was married to Bradley MEREDITH and lived in Clay Co. They show up as: HUBBARD, Larken, 33, head, b. KY (married in 1865 in Knox) . .Sarah A., 34, wife, b. KY; father b. VA; mother b. KY . .Cathern, 12, at home, dau, b. KY . .James F., 10, farms, son, b. KY . .Bradly, 8, son, b. KY (named after her father) . .Elijah, 5, son, b. KY (possibly named after one of her mother, Mahala TAYLOR GAMBREL MEREDITH SMITH's later husbands, "an" Elijah SMITH) . .Amanda, 2, dau, b. KY . .John, 3 months, son, b. KY Basically my whole TAYLOR and associated family are living all around in this area of Stinking Creek. The other family connection is that at some point (I have no marriage record)my g-grandfather (Harrison TAYLOR, b. 1836; d. 1904)'s older sister, Mahala TAYLOR was married around 1871-1875 to "an" Elijah SMITH. My gg-grandfather, Cornelius Alexander TAYLOR b. 1794; d. 1874 died and when his properties were divided up there is a record of the sons and daugthers signing off on deed transfers. For Mahala who was already widowed from Bradley MEREDITH, she shows up as: Mahala SMITH Elijah SMITH I have never known where there was some older Elijah SMITH that she married and perhaps he died or they divorced or. . . if it was actually possible that Mahala b. 1822 and the Elijah SMITH b. abt. 1850 married and divorced. >From the census records for Knox Co., KY: 1900 Knox Co., KY Dwelling 180-179 SMITH, Elijah, head, b. 1-1867, 33, mar. 3 yrs, b.
