When I went back through my files re Alabama TAYLOR MILLS, at least as of the 1880 Fed. Census she was shown as "disabled" and it was reported to me that someone's ancestor had known this family and that the accident was a sugar cane mills accident where the mule could not be stopped before taking Alabama's arm. I cannot even imagine what that must have been like to have had such an accident in those times and to have actually survived. In a photo of her, you can see that the limb is missing because on one side of her dark dress, there is a "caved in" appearance where an arm would have been. How they would have ever kept her from bleeding to death or going into shock and dying is almost beyond me.
