    1. Re: [KYKNOX] Knox County Genealogical Society
    2. Hello, I am a member of the Knox County Historical Museum. I try to join societies in areas that my ancestors were from to provide funds needed by the local societies to produce their publications. I was also a member of the Knox County Genealogical Society. Their collection and I believe their charter was turned over to the Museum after their dissolution. At that time, it was mentioned that upcoming newsletters produced by the Museum would contain a genealogy section. The museum, like most volunteer operated facilities does as good of a job as they can with their limited resources. They probably need more volunteers to assist them with organizing their collection and producing their newsletter which although excellent has been running almost a year behind schedule for some time. They have been trying to get the volume dates caught up, but I am sure they are swamped. I believe that they have mentioned they are working with the local DAR chapter for assistance with their newer genealogy donations. Has anyone contacted them to see about available books? At the time that the collection was turned over to them, it was mentioned that they would still sell the books that were left. However, since I live in Ohio, I am not sure of what they currently have available for sale. I suggest that you contact them at the e-mail address located on the following link that is on the chamber of commerce website: http://www.knoxcochamber.com/museumpage.asp I have just sent a message to that link to ask if someone who works at the museum and is more knowledgeable can send a message to this list that answers some of the questions that are being asked. I too wish that there was still a genealogical society for Knox County. In one of the letters that I sent to them with book orders I asked Maxine and Virginia about the possibility of having at least one physical meeting each year to give society members a chance to meet and share information. At the time, they explained how they had always operated it long distance and the society had never had meetings. I would be glad to assist long distance with planning a first "Knox County Genealogy Day" in conjunction with the Knox County Historical Museum if they are willing. It would be nice to have a weekend when the museum could be available for researchers and attendees could get together for one day to share information. Whitley County does something similar each August in Williamsburg. I am a past officer in an Ohio Genealogical Society chapter in SE Ohio and I have scheduled meeting programs, given programs, and organized their annual Heritage Day luncheons. If this is something that list members would like to see, then we need to get a consensus as to a time period that is most convenient and what type of event you would like to attend. Do you just want an informal get together to share family research? Do you want a meeting where speakers would give tips on research in Knox County and where records may be found? Would you like a short event that lasts for one morning or afternoon or possibly starts on Friday for researchers and continues on Saturday for general attendees? Are you willing to pay a small fee if a speaker is requested? I personally would appreciate it if someone from the County Government could be found who would explain where to find local records, what hours they may be available for researchers, the best time of year or week to visit to assist me when I am able to visit to do research. It is possible some of this information could be gleaned and published as an article in an upcoming newsletter by the Museum. Debra Geesner ************** Planning your summer road trip?
