RESPONSE: Hello, I looked in the marriage records I have for Knox Co., Bell Co. , Laurel Co. and a partial listing I have for Whitley Co., KY and did NOT locate a marriage for them. If I had to just guess, I would say they might well have married in Pulaski Co., KY which appears to be where they lived for most of their lives. I would suggest you place a marriage look up request on the Message Board for Pulaski Co., KY. Mary, My grandmother Mary Jane Lawson Bays is Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Lawson Bays' sister. Uncle Charley Bays was my dad's cousin and uncle by marriage. We always called him Uncle Charley. I was at his wake in 1951. My dad Ishmael Bays and his brother, Robert Bays, helped make his coffin that night. The last time that I saw Aunt Betty Bays was at my grandmother's funeral. Aunt Betty died 31 DEC 1977. Her death date isn't on her tombstone. Do you know who took care of her in later years? I have been unable to find a marriage record for my great-grandparents. I have searched all of the records that I know about. Their names are Andrew or Andy DAVIS and Cordelia WALKER. The date was approximately 1887-89. My g-grandmother would have been listed as a mulatto. My g-grandfather was white and Indian, but was probably also listed as mulatto. He was born in Tennessee. They were probably married in or around Barbourville, where Cordelia was born. My great-grandmother was around 15 or 16 years old at the time of the marriage. Andrew was older. RESPONSE: Hello, I really cannot help you with that birth record. Just even finding the ones I did was pretty much of a fluke. KY did not begin to record births and deaths until 1911 and even then it was far from perfect for many years. However, there were some few births that did get recorded in registry (one line) format. Several years ago you had to order the microfilm from the State of KY and then find a reader perhaps at LDS to look at the records. Now days, Ancestry.com has placed these few birth records on line. I think that must be where I located it. I just looked back and the birth of Mary L. is found in two places. It is in a Vital Stats book I have for Whitley Co. that was privately transcribed. The same information is also found when I look at the actual registry style record found placed on Ancestry. In both places the parents are named as: Calaway MOORE from Whitley Co. and Nancy BENNETT from TN. Joyce, I'm also working on Bays , Rose families (Elbert & Phoebe Carr Bays.and James & Stella Bays Rose) And Miphra Mosley who married a Pearlie Bays in 1912, they has a son Edward Mosley b.1913, Also Miphra died Dec 1913. I was surprised to read that someone else was also working / related on Mosley, Bays. Than what i has found about Phoebe Carr (Kerr) Bays was true, she had married after her husband Elbert Bays died in 1914? Joyce, thank you so much--you always go the extra mile, and it has been so helpful. In regards to the birth record of Mary L Moore b. Dec 29, 1874: She would not be listed on the censuses (I've seen them also) with Calaway and Nancy Moore for the story goes she was GIVEN AWAY to an uncle, we believe to be Sterling Moore (died in logging mishap Bell co 1877), whose widow Sarah (Peavely) Moore is listed 1880 Knox with a 5 yr-old Mary. Would you look for this 1874-75 birth to this couple. If the birth is there, then it must have been another Uncle who raised Calaway Moore's child Mary. In trying to understand why our ggrandparents would give away this child, my sisster and I are wondering if she may actually be illigitimate dau. of Calaway Moore and--Unknown . Does that birth record you found of Mary L Moore list the mother's actual name, as in "Nancy Bennett/Moore", or just "Calaway Moore and wife", as you wrote. This Mary was unknown to us until recent years when an elderly relative revealed the story to another cousin. This Mary was never talked about. Now we know for sure. Thank you so much. I know I'm rambling a lot, but we are so interested in knowing the truth. Regarding my original request, Eliza Jane Moore MAY have married a Monhollen, and possibly had a child named Roscoe; would you look for his birth? His 2nd marriage to my g-aunt Maudie Moore is recorded Knox co 1921, gave his parents names as Robert and Liza.
