I believe I am a descendant of hers but cannot find anyone who has any information on her and her descendants. She may have left Kentucky around 1856 and went to Polk Co. Tn or Cherokee Co., NC. There is an entry for a Rebecca Payne living with a Burgess family in the 1860 NC census and I'm trying to find out if this is the same person. Hi, I am looking for this old cemetery, Locust Grove. I was told it was out by the Golden's Cemetery. Can someone give me exact directions. Thank you! Debra, you have a grand idea! I just live about 25 miles from Barbourville and would certainly try to attend such a meeting as you spoke of. I would say a week end thing would be nice, especially for ones who came a long distance. They could go in on Friday and see what they museum had and then go back on Saturday ready to do research. I'm all for this idea and will help in any way I can. Mary Siler
Debra Perhaps one of the Knox Co Genealogical Soc problems was in their not having meetings. Just as the old saying goes..."Out of sight, out of mind it can work the same with organizations. Traveling is difficult for me, but I would certainly do my best to attend which ever kind of meeting is set up. I just know there is a need. As Grandma Lucinda Powers used to say..."Recon we need to pray on it."...Lois . FAITH IS NOT BELIEVING THAT GOD CAN.... IT IS KNOWING THAT HE WILL!! . I too wish that there was still a genealogical society for Knox County. In one of the letters that I sent to them with book orders I asked Maxine and Virginia about the possibility of having at least one physical meeting each year to give society members a chance to meet and share information. At the time, they explained how they had always operated it long distance and the society had never had meetings. **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. Hello, I am a member of the Knox County Historical Museum. I try to join societies in areas that my ancestors were from to provide funds needed by the local societies to produce their publications. I was also a member of the Knox County Genealogical Society. Their collection and I believe their charter was turned over to the Museum after their dissolution. At that time, it was mentioned that upcoming newsletters produced by the Museum would contain a genealogy section. The museum, like most volunteer operated facilities does as good of a job as they can with their limited resources. They probably need more volunteers to assist them with organizing their collection and producing their newsletter which although excellent has been running almost a year behind schedule for some time. They have been trying to get the volume dates caught up, but I am sure they are swamped. I believe that they have mentioned they are working with the local DAR chapter for assistance with their newer genealogy donations. Has anyone contacted them to see about available books? At the time that the collection was turned over to them, it was mentioned that they would still sell the books that were left. However, since I live in Ohio, I am not sure of what they currently have available for sale. I suggest that you contact them at the e-mail address located on the following link that is on the chamber of commerce website: http://www.knoxcochamber.com/museumpage.asp I have just sent a message to that link to ask if someone who works at the museum and is more knowledgeable can send a message to this list that answers some of the questions that are being asked. I would be glad to assist long distance with planning a first "Knox County Genealogy Day" in conjunction with the Knox County Historical Museum if they are willing. It would be nice to have a weekend when the museum could be available for researchers and attendees could get together for one day to share information. Whitley County does something similar each August in Williamsburg. I am a past officer in an Ohio Genealogical Society chapter in SE Ohio and I have scheduled meeting programs, given programs, and organized their annual Heritage Day luncheons. If this is something that list members would like to see, then we need to get a consensus as to a time period that is most convenient and what type of event you would like to attend. Do you just want an informal get together to share family research? Do you want a meeting where speakers would give tips on research in Knox County and where records may be found? Would you like a short event that lasts for one morning or afternoon or possibly starts on Friday for researchers and continues on Saturday for general attendees? Are you willing to pay a small fee if a speaker is requested? I personally would appreciate it if someone from the County Government could be found who would explain where to find local records, what hours they may be available for researchers, the best time of year or week to visit to assist me when I am able to visit to do research. It is possible some of this information could be gleaned and published as an article in an upcoming newsletter by the Museum. Debra Geesner ************** Planning your summer road trip? Charlotte & Mary With all the good researchers we see posting that live in Knox Co., I've often wondered why a some don't get together and reform that group. So many of us have ancestors from Knox Co., it's truly needed. Mary, do you Whitley Co folks have an area of Knox Co is your building?stuff. Been wondering about that also...Lois Lois, yes, we do have a section on Knox County and get new books in all the time. We have books on several other KY counties, especially the ones around Whitley. We have a large TN section and some in VA & WVA among other states. Mary

Thanks to both of you for your response to my request about Knox County Cemetery Books. I will check with the Historical Society there in Barbourville and see what they tell me. I have met Virginia Jones Logan and Maxine Humfleet Jones who ran the Knox County Genealogical Society from their home. They are lovely ladies that turned out to be related to me. They hauled a van load of research material to the Knox Historical Society. I'm hoping they will be allowed to make copies of the cemetery books to sell. Mary Jones Siler
