My husband is Floyd COLLINS b. 1936 in West Carrollton, OH. His parents were: Merlie COLLINS and Edna CANTRELL. They were from Grainger Co., TN and Campbell Co., TN. I do think at one point I found some of them in Anderson Co., TN which is close by. I have my husband's earliest relative as this: 1850 Grainger Co., TN Dwelling 1160-1211 COLLINS, Duncan/Dunman/Dunkin, abt. 48 b. TN( as in various census records) . . Polly, 37 b. TN . . Sarah M., 12, b. TN . . Silas A., 10, b. TN . .Rachel A., 8, b. TN . .Inrie, 6, b. TN . .Leanna J., 5, b. TN . .Eliza, 3, b. TN . .Seaborn, 1, b. TN * * My husband descends through this Seaborn/Ceborn married to an Amanda COLLINS in Grainger Co. in 1869. They had a Shannon COLLINS b. abt. 1889 in Grainger Co., TN who married Cornia/Corny/Cornia PHILLIPS b. 1895 in TN and in 1910 in Grainger Co., TN Dwelling 32-32 COLLINS, Shanon, 21, mar. 6 yrs, b. TN Eventually they left TN and came into OH, Montgomery Co. As far as Isom BALL b. abt. 1903, he died on 7-4-1936 in Harlan Co. from an automobile accident. His parents are listed on his death cert as: Lem BALL and Rebecca GARRETT. Mrs. Ida BALL was the informant. He was buried at Ages, Harlan Co., KY. Lem is short for Lemuel BALL. His parents were: John M. BALL and Elizabeth SERGENT. Elizabeth SERGENT was a sister to my gg-grandfather, William "Martin" SERGENT and although I have not calculated John M. BALL he is also no doubt a relative. I couldn't help it. I checked. The John M. BALL was a brother to my Nancy BALL married to James B. HOWARD. And, Nancy BALL was my g-grandmother on the maternal side. So, I am related on both sides. He married Mary McDaniel about 1877. Their son James E. Johnson was born July 1879. (He is with them in the 1880 census in Knox). They had another son Henry and two daughters Ollie and Dannie Mae (our grandmother). Mary McDaniels Johnson died in 1890. In 1892, Britton married Mary Jones. They didn't have any children. The Dennis listed with them is Britt's grandson by his son James E. Johnson. Britt and Mary raised Dennis. We were told that Dennis mother died in childbirth and his father couldn't take care of him. In 1900 they are in Anderson County, and in 1910 in Knox. His second wife died about 1928. By now all his children had moved from TN to KY (Harlan, Bell, Knox Counties) to work in the mines. Britt went to live with his granddaughter (Ida May Hamby Ball & her husband Isom Ball). Ida May was a daughter of Ollie Johnson (Britt's daughter). Until just a few months ago, I didn't know if his name was Bri! tt, Brittain, Britton, Albert,or Robert. My mother-in-law always said he went by Britt Johnson. He was her husband's grandpa. Britt's daughter Dannie Mae, married William Thornton Collins in Campbell Co. TN in 1904. They left there about 1915 to go to Harlan, Kentucky. He had relatives there and he went to work in the mines. Their son Roy Collins (my father-in-law) 1911-1983, worked in the mines as an electrician and was also a preacher. He married my mother-in-law, Maude Ellen 'Frye' in Tinsley, Bell Co. Ky in 1935. While working the mines, he attended Fruitland Bible College & later accepted a church in Knoxville, TN. He moved his wife and 3 sons there, where they all grew up. Roy later took a church in NC. Their youngest son is my husband Donald (1943-1992. Now my in-laws and all 3 of their sons are buried here in Western NC. The sons died fairly young, (50, 45, 49.) I'm retired from nursing now, working on the family's ancestry. I'm tracing the Collins, Fryes,! Johnson, Saylors, Brocks, Sprinkles & Blanton families from the KY co unties mentioned above, as well as the TN counties that border KY. Thanks so much for you help. When I looked at his death certificate, my reading of it is that he was buried somewhere in the area called "Flat Lick" but not necessarily in a cemetery called Flat Lick. It is difficult to read but appears to me he was born in Grainger Co., TN. Ancestry.com has it listed as "George" but I think that is an error. What is further interesting and just a coincidence is that as of the 1910 census he shows up in "Knox Co.", TENNESSEE : Dwelling 45-45 JOHNSON, Brit, 58, b. TN (which equates out to a birth year of 1852) . .Nancy, 52, wife, b. TN . .Dennis, 8, grandson Then going backwards to the 1880 Knox Co., TENNESSEE Fed. census: Dwelling 318-354 JOHNSON, Britton, 24, b. TN . .Mary L., 21, b. TN . .James E., 10 months, b. TN McDANIEL, Sarah A., 15, "sister-in-law" When he died of kidney disease in Knox Co., KY in 1932, he age is shown as around 68 years which equates out to: 1864 Then to make things further confusing in 1880 in Harlan Co., KY (not all that far from Knox Co., KY): Dwelling 39-39 JOHNSON, Britton, 34, b. KY . .Barbary, 32, b. KY . .James, 14, b. KY . .Carline, 10, b. KY . . Robert, 8, b. KY . .Lucy, 4, b. KY . .Feriba, 1, b. KY Then later on as of the 1930 Fed. census and still in Harlan Co., KY Dwelling 117-122 BALL, Isom, 26 . .Ida, wife, and several children and a brother, Frank, is the widow, Brit JOHNSON, age 76 (equates to1854) b. now in TN; parents b. NC Really interesting how he came to be in Knox Co., KY. Usually when they were older they would have followed some of their sons and their families to some new place. Flat Lick is definatly located in knox county. The area is located around the Flat Lick school and the old 25E. Also around the exit for Artemus. Mary Ellen Hughes was born in Kentucky in March of 1852. - not sure exactly where at this point. We have found one birth record in Allen Co., Kentucky, for a M.E. Hughs, parents J.J. Hughs and N.J. or A.J. Walam or Nalam, can't figure that one out. No way to tell if this is her or not. Her obit says she was born in Louisville, KY..but I've not found any birth in 1852 for her in the Louisville area and we feel this may not be correct. Her Father's name was James Hugh(e)s born ca. 1831/32, also in Kentucky, we do not know who his parents were. This is one of the things I'm hoping you can help me with, if we can make the link. We do not know the name of Mary Ellen's Mother. James Hughes had two sons - John W. born ca 1856 in either Kentucky or Arkansas. Census records show one or the other, depending on the census year. and Samuel Meredith born 9 May 1861 in either Kentucky or Arkansas ... again the problem with the census records. Samuel's death certificate, sorry to say, does not show the name of his Mother, nor where HE was born !! I guess his wife didn't know. James Hugh(e)s is in the 1870 census in Greene County, Missouri with John W., Samuel, and Mary E.. as well as a wife Samantha, and a young child Cordelia who was born in Missouri in 1867. We are assuming that Samantha is his SECOND wife. Have not found a marriage record for them yet. Also can find nothing as yet in the 1860 census so far, in either Arkansas or Missouri. Mary Ellen Hughes married John C. Hannon in Greene County, Missouri 28 May 1871. We definitely know where Mary Ellen and Samuel were in later years and John W., was in Arkansas. Have been attempting to trace them backwards and locate their Mother ... not having any luck. Samantha( 2nd wife of James Hughes) re-married in 1878 in Missouri ... so I am assuming that James Hughes died somewhere between the 1870 census and her re-marriage in 1878. So, this is where we are at this point. Kathy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
