She married George W. Frye about 1878-1879. They raised their family in Knox County, Ky. However, our mother (1909-1989) told us that Susan Sprinkle's mother was a Tucker and also that her father was born in Virginia. I am having a hard time finding Susan's parents. I don't know her father's first name. Susan Sprinkle was born March 28, 1858 and died Nov. 18, 1915 in Grays township, Knox County, Kentucky. The History of Providence Baptist Church, Winston, Estill Co Ky 1856-1978 does mention Samuel Newman who operated a tannery and owned slaves. The 1850 census Estill County lists Samuel Newman as being age 50. He obtained a fifty acre land grant on Drowning Creek 12 Sep 1837. David and Samuel Newman bought 255 acres of land on Drowning Creek from William Burnett in the 1830's. **************Need a new ride? I have Rachel Newman, born Nov. 1874 Knox Co., KY who married Ephriam Jones. Her parents are Samuel & Charity Payne Newman and her grandparents are William & Jamima Payne. Is this the same family? Is it right that both father and son married Payne women. Mary Siler
Hey Gene! How have you been? I have been pretty busy here and have not been able to do much genealogy, but have cleared up some mysteries. We finally jacked up the front of the house and rebuilt the floor in the living room, tore down a wall and made a couple of closets. I am so tickled that I got two closets and am getting more as time and money allows. It will be nice to have things somewhat more organized, to say the least. My great grandmother Hall was Margaret M. Newman. She was my Gr-grandfather's second wife - she was only 17 - the age of her step daughter - when she married Thomas Richard Hall. One of the genealogists in my family says Margaret married a second time after Richard's death, but after a year, it didn't work out and she went back to the name of Hall. She was born in KY in 1861-1863 (depending on the source). My grandfather was her fourth or fifth child. Margaret's parents were John Henry Newman and Elizabeth Branstutter. I don't have very much on John Henry, except that he was born between 1828-1833, and that he was born in either KY or TN. I have only gotten as far as John Henry's father, William Newman, who was born between 1812 and 1817, in either Knox Co., KY or NC. I think at that time the state and county boundaries between SE KY and NC and the counties forming in Ky, Tn and NC probably made it a bit hard to tell where William came from. He married a Jemima Pain/Paine/Payne. I have went back pretty far back with her lineage all the way back to Oyster Bay, New York. If you want, I could send you what I have on the Paynes, Stewarts and Harrises. Anita B. At 02:02 PM 4/25/2008, you wrote: >Hi Anita, > >Which Newman's are yours? I have these folks in my data base. I would HIGHLY suggest you make some postings to the Harlan Co., KY Message Board. There are numerous HOWARD researchers on that Board. On the 1930 Harlan Co. Sometimes that means nothing though. At the same time, here is what I do see: These are HOWARD children born to maiden name, Rosa/Rose MOWERY in Harlan Co., KY HOWARD, John D. b. 7-14-1927 HOWARD, Inez b. 7-17-1931 HOWARD, Delores b. 7-31-1936 HOWARD, Norma L. b. 8-29-1933 This is most probably that Rosa Lee MOWERY. RESPONSE: Hello, I am not related to this family so far as I know, however, I did a little investigating for you and will just give you what I see. You can make the final determinations or perhaps it will help you to gather some more documentation: MARRIAGE RECORD from my Knox Co. marriage books sold by the now defunct Knox Co. Genealogical Society: June 11, 1887 Groom - lst marriage Bride - lst marriage at: Thomas SMITH HAMPTON, John Will, age 18 born: Knox Co. father: not listed mother: not listed but states she was from Rockcastle Co., KY to: SMITH, Ellen, 18, no other information on the marriage record As of the 1880 Knox Co., there is this listing: Dwelling 234-236 HAMPTON, James, 33, head, b. KY . .John N., 1, b. KY STEWART, Martha, 44, b. KY NOTE: Assuming it is correct from his marriage record that he was born in Knox Co., this John N. fits perfectly. The listing above is from my transcribed books of census. When I looked at the actual microfilm, it is actually difficult to read the middle initial of the John HAmPTION, the one year old in this family. I tend to think that he was actually a John W. As for the 1860 Knox Co., KY, there is only one family in Knox Co. that James could be a part of. His age is off but that sort of thing happens all of the time due to lack of good record keeping and lack of education. I have no way to know at this point if this would be the correct James HAMPTON because he simply could have arrived from elsewhere: Dwelling 698 HAmPTON, Joel, 33, b. TN . .Nancy, 30, b. KY NOTE: When you go forward to the 1870 Knox Co., Nancy HAMPTON seems to be widowed or at least no husband is present. James, age 17 is still in the household.
