Can someone straighten me out. i am quite mixed up. There are two Larkin Hubbards one born 1847 and one born 1834. One of these Larkins Married Sarah Merida/Meredith one married Martha Jane Jackson and one married Rebecca Gambrel. Can anyone tell me who married who and who do the children belong to. This isn't my direct line and I ran into someone who is the great granddaughter of Larkin and Martha, but she doesn't know a whole lot of the children so I'm struggling to seperate who belongs to who. My understanding of census taking is that although it is listed as being 1880, it could actually have been conducted during the later part of the previous year. Even if it was done during the spring of 1880, Ellis was born in August so it could possibly have been completed before his birth. The only reason I am confident of his date of birth and birth place is that his wife Lura (known to all as Lurie), had it in her Bible. Now, I realize that could still be incorrect, but I think odds are it was accurate. Unfortunately, she did not list his parents, only hers. I have done some more checking and I have the following information on some of Ellis' siblings, although I'm not certain how accurate some of the dates are: Charity b. 2/1877 d. 4/1950 mar. Kit York Riley b. 5/1884 d. 5/1960 mar. 1st Lola Jones had six children, when she died, he married her sister Nola and had eleven children. George b. 1878 d. 1960 John - I have no information other than at some point in time, Ellis and Lurie adopted his daughter Ethel. I am doubtful that the Sterling Rose family is mine because it does not list Charity and the age for George is about five years off. It would seem they moved around quite often, so I guess I'll keep digging. It's possibly they could have been in Whitley County just prior to Ellis' birth, then moved to Knox. Again, thank you!

They are not there as of 1870, however. The reason I think it could be them is that his mother's name was Clarindy/Clarinda and in one of the later census, one of the dau.'s of Ellis ROSE was named Clara. Dwelling 393-399 ROSE, Sterling M., 36, husband, mar., b. KY; parents b. KY . Clarindy, 33, wife, mar. b. KY; father b. TN; mother b. KY . Mariam, 13, at home, dau, KY . James A. My thinking was that the birth date was off a bit, either later in the year after the census was taken or something like that. The later census records seem to bear that out, although one cannot depend upon census records to be correct either. There was no much illiteracy and lack of general recordkeeping. Birthdates can vary all over the place. Tombstone dates are also not accurate at times. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA

This record states that he was then 19 and that he was born in Aug, 1880... which explains why he was not in the 1880 census. If you are sure that he was born in Knox Co. I guess your best bet is to look for a young childless couple by the name of Rose or a growing Rose family there that had a child about 2 years... as Ellis may have been ready to appear there very shortly... and focus your search on that family. I do know he married Lura Hammon(d)s in Whitley County, KY then at some point, moved to Bell County. As to Ellis being a nickname, I really wouldn't know. That is the name on his tombstone in Pineville cemetary, and all relatives have only ever referred to him as Ellis, so I am assuming that is his legal name.

The 1890 Fed. Census, in most all cases, was destroyed and does not exist for Knox Co., KY. As of the 1900, there is no Ellis ROSE listed. Are you sure it was Knox Co., KY and not perhaps some other state??? Or, it may have been one of the nearby KY counties. In any case, perhaps if you come back to this posting or your original posting and add in any other information you have such as where he grew up, his wife, his children, where they all lived, perhaps someone can be of further help. When and where did he die? Who were his parents? What is YOUR relationship to this Ellis ROSE? Is it possible he had some other name. As an example, could he have been a William "Ellis" ROSE or an Ambrose "Ellis" ROSE. These are just examples and not actual listings I have seen. As of the 1880 Knox there is no ROSE family listed with any child of 1 - 3 years of age who is a male. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA

HALE being the George HALE in Knox Co. early on. However, I don't believe that is now true. A George or George W. (depending upon the census year) appears in Knox Co. from 1850 through 1880. He is the son of T. J. HALE and a Barbara MARLOW (I think). She is a widow by 1870. On the 1850, there is a George W. HALE who is 22 years old, born in KY and probably the son of a Rochester HALE b. in KY. By 1860, George shows in the home of T. J. HALE and Barba ALLIN (MARLOW) HALE and he is 8 years old. By 1870, Barbara is a widow and George shows as George W. and is 16 years old, b. in KY. By 1880, he is 24 years old and still in the home with his mother and siblings. Your George or George B. , I think, married prior to 1880. As of the 1900, this George appears as follows in Knox Co. while at the same time your George B. is in Laurel Co.; then later in 1910 in Bell Co. Dwelling 147-148 HALE, George, husband, b. 10-1863, 46, mar. 11 yrs, b. KY , parents b. KY (note how his age continues to change and now instead of his mother being born in NC , both are b. in KY) this happens all of the time! . Bettie, wife, b. 11-1864, 35, mar. 11 yrs, b. KY; 5 born; 4 living, b. KY . Johnnie, son, b. 5-1892, 8, KY . Robert, son, b. 5-1894, 6, KY . Mollie, dau, b. 1-1896, 4, KY . Willie, son, b. 10-1899, 8 mo's, KY There is also another George W. born in 1881 who is in the household of T. J. HALE. Most likely the "W" in George's name stands for George Washington and the T. J. in the other HALE stands for Thomas Jefferson. People back then liked to name folks for famous people, Presidents, generals, and so on and so forth. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA
