    1. Green Messer
    2. Joyce Collins
    3. RESPONSE: Cassy, As you probably already know, there is no Green MESSER who shows up on the 1880 Clay or Knox Co. However, as of the 1900 Knox, he appears as follows: Dwelling -- - 305 MESSER, Green, husband, b. 1-1880, 20, mar. 0 yrs,b. KY; parents b. KY - day laborer . . Corda, wife, b. 3-1882, 18, mar. 0 yrs, 0 children born; b. KY; parents b. KY NOTE: I found their marriage record in Bell Co. as follows: October 18, 1899 MESSER, Green to GAMBRELL, Cordie, Book ), Page 476 He is living right next to: Dwelling 302-304 MESSER, John, husband, b. 12-1877, 22, mar. 4 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY - day laborer . . Lizzie, wife, b. 5-1880, 20, mar. 4 yrs, 2 born; 1 living, b. KY; parents b. KY . . Cora, dau, b. 6-1897, 2, b. KY NOTE: Now this is the John MESSER who was married to Eliza GAMBREL, dau. of Samuel GAMBREL and Easter MILLS. I have him as Ambrose "Ellis" MESSER and Elizabeth EDWARDS children. After the death of his wife, he married 2nd to Rutha GROSS who was married lst to Christopher Columbus TAYLOR who was killed. I am wondering if perhaps in the transcribed record, his birthdate was not Jan. 1880 but could have been some month later in the year and was therefore missed by the 1880 Fed. Census. Then because he married in 1899, he just doesn't show up until the 1900 as a married man. If we were lucky, his marriage record might show his parents or perhaps his death cert. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CBB.2ACE/576.1434.1.1.1 Message Board Post: It sounds like you are gleaning from the past the same way I am. I remember when my grandmother was in contact with Sue Diggle about 40-some years ago helping her with the Criswell History. Ms Diggle was researching it for Pastor W.A. Criswell of First Baptist, Dallas. He is descended from one of William's younger brothers as John Y. Sr is his great-grandpa. Anyway, as a result, we received a copy of her painstaking work. It is single-spaced, on onion-skin paper, about one inch thick. It contains everything that was known at the time regarding John Y Criswell, Sr. and his family. It also includes anectdotal history regarding her findings, such as one of the cousins who moved to Llano/San Saba, Texas area was roping calves one day. As he tossed his rope and stepped off the horse to catch the calf, on of the loops settled around his neck. The calf hit the end of the rope and, as the other end was dallied around the saddle horn, it broke this cousins neck, killing him instantly. Incidentally, My sister and mother went and found the old original cemetary where grandpa Wm was first buried, before his being moved to the State Cemetary. We lived in Fayette County, Texas at the time and located several of the burial plots of Criswells. If you've not been to the State Cemetary to view his marker, it is on a website on-line, but I forget how to get there. Probably through the State of Texas somewhere. If I discover it, I'll get it to you, unless you tell me different. If you have any questions about something in this history, you may contact my sister, who has the copy in her possession. Her e-mail is: elmtexas@awsomenet.net Good luck. Charles B.

    3. Found grave of Thomas Stewart. This was a wonderful find and I have to thank Lisa Wombles who led me to this cemetery. I was looking for someone else and they weren't there, but I know others have recently spoken about Thomas Stewart. His tombstone can be seen on my tombstone web page. This was a fairly large cemetery, but most of the stones were unmarked. It was said to see how over grown it was and I think the last burial was in 1997 but you couldn't tell that from looking around. You need an invite if not already a member. 3. Hi Krista, thank you so very much for the look ups. I can't make Anderson Smith,s/o Elias & Eddy come round to be mine- although they do have a Blevens and Lumb (Columbus) Smith. Wonder who Lucas belongs to? He too is a s/o Elias & Eddy. Family lore is the "Smith boys are indeed the sons of Elias & Eddy! family lore also states? The 4 Lewis sisters, Sylvania, Polly Jane, Martha and Liziana are the daughters of Judah Lewis and Rebecca Hoskins. All ideas most welcomed! Thanks again, Katie k.t@core.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Krista Loyd To: Clarence Dossett Sent: Sunday, September 01, 2002 9:26 PM Subject: Re: 1870 KNOX COUNTY LOOK UP ??? Hi Katie. I am sorry, but I am not finding a Blevens Smith on the 1870 Knox census. There is an Adis W. on pg 97 listed as follows: Smith, Leander 33, farmer, KY Anny L. 33, KY America, 14, KY Albert W., 6, KY Roseanna J., 4, KY Adis W., 1, KY There is also no Columbus or Steven Smith on the 1870 Knox census. I have the census index for several eastern KY counties. I searched for Adison, A, Columbus, Steven, Bleven, and B Smith and found the following: No Blevens. Under B Smith I found them in Oldham, Henderson, Taylor, Warren, Campbell, Hopkins and Pike counties Columbus Blevens was found in Bourbon, Webster and Nicholas counties Steven Smith was found in Campbell, Nelson and Cumberland counties. Adison was in Todd county. Addison was in Lee county There was an AJ Smith in Nicolas and an AK Smith in Campbell. Since Campbell seems to be the most common denominator, you might consider starting there? The index does not list any one other than head of household, so I can't give you any more information other than the above. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck! While I did know about William fighting the Mexicans -- and about his body being moved to the State Cemetery (that is the only reason I know what I know.....), I was not clear on the dates for Papa William being in Kentucky. So thanks! There are several resources available to you - if you are new at all of this (I am....and the more I know the more confused I am!) about the Criswells. I happily share any and all..... It is nice to have another cousin on the "tree"!! I know that my mother will be happy to make this contact with you! My grandmother was Effie Criswell, daughter of John Henry and grand daughter of William Vannoy. She was a treasure to have in my life -- and always VERY much comitted to her family -- no matter how many "once-removed" they were! While I am new to all of this -- I do have a wealth of information from my mother. It is not that I am so all fired up about genealogy as much as it is this intense fear I have that all the work she has done (by hand and by GOING places, I might add! -- none of this "click-the-mouse-stuff" you and I can access!) will just disappear with herI am deperately trying to at least get it all down somewhere and in some fashion that I can understand nad know how to "cull through". Wm. V. Criswell is my g-g-g-grandfather. His daughter, Elizabeth Jane, was my grandmother's grandmother. So, hello cuz!! I just read a posting in the Criswell pages by Dennis Yancey which indicated that John Y. Criswell, Sr. (Wm.V.'s father) moved to Knox Co, KY from Sullivan Co., TN. Our family records indicate that Wm was born in Knox Co., KY in 1815 and died in Texas in 1858 after having fought in several of the battles for Texas Independance......Come and Take It battle in Gonzales, TX; Siege of Bexar, San Antonio; and San Jacinto. I had no idea, though, that he had travelled through MO at any time or had relatives there. I have found that Wm V's grandfather, William Vannoy, lived in Knox Co, KY from 1802 until sometime after the 1840 census. His daughter, Eleanor, married John Yancey Criswell, Sr. Hope some of this helps and is not "old news"..... Charles Bauch
