Mr. Richard MATTHEWS who has inventoried literally hundreds and hundreds of cemeteries in Bell Co., KY is a HAMMONDS/HAMMONS descendant. I believe you can locate his e-mail address from the Bell Co. main webpage link. Sorry I cannot give it to you directly. He may have some information for you. I have about 10 James HAMMONS in my data base but have no specific information on your James W. b. abt. 1823. With regard, however, to Lucinda Ann ABNER (you state was born abt. 1828 in Knox Co.), that information may not be correct. I checked through the 1810 to and including the 1840 Knox Co. census records. There were no ABNER families there. I also looked at Marriage Book A for Knox Co. and found no males or females marrying in Knox Co. from just past 1800 through 1850. On the Clay Co. 1810 Fed. Census, there was one ABNER listed as Elisha ABNER. Under the early marriages in Clay Co., I found these: ABNER, Enoch to Anna PRICE on Jan. 18, 1822 ABNER, Monroe to Aggy BOWLIN on March 23, 1813 ABNER, Elisha to Jennie BAKER on June 2, 1827 ABNER, Minion to Lucinda BENGE on Oct. 7, 1829 ABNER, John to Millie NOBLE on Oct. 7, 1829 Simply from a census and marriage record standpoint, she could more easily have been born in Clay Co., KY. Good luck to you in furthering your research. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA

Hammonds b.1823 and Lucinda Ann Abner b.abt 1828 in Knox County. They were married abt 1847 in Owsley County (Marriage could be 1-10-1850) I found them on the 1850 Owsley Co. Census pg 278 - James is 26, Lucinda is 22 and Jane is 1. Owsley Cty was formed from part of Clay county in 1843. By the next Census of 1860 they are now part of Jackson County and have 5 children. I am trying to find James Hammons birthplace and birth parents. I have Knox County as the birth location for Lucinda Abner Hammond. Knox County has many Hammons/Hammonds listed in their census records 1810 through 1860. Any hlep finding the parents Of James W. would be greatly appreciated.

That's Apple GROVE. I would say that more than a few of your ancestors are buried in this cemetery. I know two ladies who belong to the legion up there...I'll see if I can remember to ask her about the names in the cemetery. She is a very nice and interesting lady and she works (volenteers) at the Knox Historical Meseum on Daniel Boone Drive. I believe at this time of year the Meseum is only open part of the day on Wednesday but is usually open most of the week of the Daniel Boone Festival which is this year October 6-12. I looked in the phone book but her number is not listed and I don't know what street she lives on. According to "History & Families of Knox County KY 1994" Susan Arthur was born in 1917 to John M. Arthur and Lettie McKeehan Arthur. This book was published by the Historical Meseum and has a lot of information about the Arthurs. Try your library to see if they have a copy. Good luck.

Mary, Thanks for "Apple Cove" name of area where cemetery is... That is interesting as I wonder if Richland Creek might have changed course sometime between 1920's and now.... Two reasons: First, my mother told me that her father, William A Hinkle, had an apple orchard... and that she was raised in last house before Richland Creek and Cumberland River. That the original road deadended when the old bridge over the creek washed away and the "new" one was built further up creek on "Black" property... (Around 1918, the flood waters did reach their home.. Flooding their first floor & they stayed on second... they moved soon afterwards and finally left Barbourville in 1924..).(My mother, born 1903, died this year in California at age 99) I thought until recently that the Hinkle property was probably under the current floodwall ... now I wonder if the 30+ acres owned by Peter Hinkle and Silas Dishman at the turn of the century, might have extended further West of Main St.and Cumberland River than originally thought.... Secondly, William's dad, Capt Peter Hinkle was supposedly buried on Hinkle property.... The recently uncovered cemetery with the "Civil War" graves, at "Apple Cove" also included a large, readable gravestone for Capt Peter Hinkle and MANY dissolved limestone markers plus the new CW markers placed by the Barbourville Amer Legion Post 69. Up until May of this year, when I found out about Peter's grave being in this "Apple Cove" graveyard and since I am missing my mother's baby brother grave, and several Hinkle relatives that died before 20's.... I have a gut feeling that some on the unreadable tomestones in this recently uncovered cemetery are for these missing relatives.... I am trying to get information on what the Am Legion has documented about this cemetery but have been unable to make contact with anyone that has been working on the project... ANY help appreciated! THOMAS1 MILLS, SR. was born May 10, 1823 in Knox Co., KY, and died May 30, 1906 in Knox Co., KY. He married (1) SUSANNAH COPE. He married (2) SARAH MESSER Abt. 1849. He married (3) ALABAMA JACKSON February 10, 1881 in Knox Co., KY, daughter of WILLIAM JACKSON and MARGARET GOLDEN. She was born Abt. 1862 in Knox Co., KY, and died April 1891 in Knox Co., KY. Child of THOMAS MILLS and SARAH MESSER is: i. EASTER2 MILLS, b. October 1849, Kentucky; d. September 02, 1927; m. SAMUEL GAMBREL, December 21, 1865; b. March 1848, Kentucky. Notes for SAMUEL GAMBREL: 1900 Census shows Samuel and Esther married 28 years, 11 children, 9 living. None of the children born prior to 1880 appear. There is a Gordon Messer, Grandson, born January 1896 but all children in the household at this time are listed as single. The family appears in the 1880, Knox Co. census as well. Samuel is listed as a farmer. Initially I had Easter's date of birth as October 1859 but changed it when I realized she would have been 6 when they were married. Frankly, I'm unsure which is correct but lean toward the marriage date as accurate at the moment. Children of THOMAS MILLS and ALABAMA JACKSON are: ii. CLEVELAND2 MILLS, b. November 1884. iii. AXIE MILLS, b. October 1886. iv. HUGH MILLS, b. April 1888, Knox Co., KY. v. MARY MILLS, b. October 12, 1888. vi. RUTH MILLS, b. April 1891.
