    3. Hello all. This message is for anyone who is researching the Saylor & Knuckles families. On Monday, October 14, 2002, John B. Saylor passed away from a long illness. JB was my neighbor who lived a few miles down the road and my late father LJ Woolum's first cousin. JB's parents were Charles C Saylor and Ida Knuckles of Bell County, Kentucky. JB's mother Ida Knuckles was the sister of my late father's mother Mary Knuckles Woolum. The following link will take you to the obit for anyone interested. I'm sure there will be another obit in the Pineville newspaper since JB is from the area and he still has a sister and brothers that live in Red Bird. If anyone finds the obit from Pineville, please email me a copy. Remember, ages almost always vary in the census records due to general illiteracy of the population at that time and simple poor recordkeeping practices. Dwelling 47-48 GRAY, Thomas, 30, b. T. to GAMBREL, Adaline By: E. F. ARTHUR at: Flat Lick Wit: Elliott BAKER and Mariah BAKER The marriage date (assuming this is the Thomas GRAY) would mean that his name was a John or James or Joseph or similiar other "J" names plus the name, Thomas. It would also mean that either they had children prior to their marriage or he was married prior and they are someone else's children. I am guessing that this Adaline would be the daughter of Martin GAMBREL. By the time of the 1900 Knox, this appears to be the same couple: Dwelling 98-99 GRAY, Thos., husband, b. 3-1850, 50, mar. 18 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY . George, stepson, b. 5-1895, 5, KY NOTE: Since they married in 1879, it is difficult to explain why the two sons as listed as stepsons because they are within the years of the marriage. However, if you look at the age, 17, IT SHOULD MEAN THAT MAT WAS BORN IN 1883! It could mean that they took in these children of someone elses. It could mean any number of things. This appears to be Flemming: Dwelling 181-184 GRAY, Flem, husband, b. 8-1873, 26, mar. 1 yr, b. KY; parrents b. KY - day laborer . Marinda, wife, b. 4-1870, 30, mar. 1 yrs, l born; l living, b. KY; parents b. KY . Lee, son, b. 5-1896, 4, b. KY; parents NOTE: If this is correct, then the son, Lee, most probably was from some other relationship of Marinda prior to her l yr. marriage to Flemming GRAY. I do not see the first marriage for Flemming GRAY but here is a second marriage: Mar. Book J for Knox Co. dated January 2, 1903, Page 520 Groom and Bride - 2nd marriages at C. B. WoOLUMS GRAY, Flem, 23, b. Knox, father, Thos. GRAY to: HENSLEY, Laura, age 23, b. Knox Co. Lastly, this appears to be the marriage of your Mary B. GRAY: Knox Co. Knox Co.; father; Thomas GRAY You have mentioned you wondered what the "B" stood for in Mary's name. I would hazard a guess it stood for "Belle/Bell". The name, Mary Belle was a popular one in those days. Although she was only married for one year, it appears that she died before the 1900 Knox Census. See this listing: Dwelling 94-95 LEATH, Abraham, husband, b. 10-1832, 77, mar. 50 yrs, b. VA; parents b. VA . Catherine, wife, b. 11-1832, 77, mar. 50 yrs, b. KY; parents b. Bond Book N dated January 31, 1896, Page 248 First marriages for both at James CALEB's JACKSON, Franklin, age 21, b. Knox Co.; father: J. L. JACKSON to: MILLS, Easter, age 16, b. Knox Co.; father: Alec MILLS; mother: Elizabeth MILLS On the 1880 Knox Co., here is the Franklin JACKSON family: Dwelling 80-80 JACKSON, John L., 40, husband, b. TN; father b. Va; mother B. TN . Susan, 37, wife, b. TN; parents b. TN . Mary, 17, at home, dau, TN . Wm. J., 15, farms, son, TN . Rufus M., 13, farms, son, TN . Geo. M., 12, farms, son, KY . Emma, 9, dau, KY . Godfrey F., 6, son, KY * * *(Frank/Franklin) . Caladona, 9 mos, dau, KY From there it gets 'tricky' because the only Elec/Alex MILLS there is listed on the 1880 Knox (with the exception of a Black Male, age 6 named Alexander) is this one: Dwelling 379-381 MILLS, Alexander, 26, husband, b. KY; parents b. KY . Abby, 26, wife, b. KY; parents b. KY (this is Abigail BARGO) . Henry, 8, son, KY . Nancy, 6, dau, KY . Daniel, 5, son, KY . Jabe, 3, son, KY . Anthony, 2, son, KY . Easter, 3 mo's, dau, b. KY * * *(one possibility) On the 1870 Knox Co., Alexander is listed as 20 years old and Abby BARGO is 18 years and they have one son, Henry, 4 mo's old. Alexander MILLS is said to be the son of Clark "Big Clark" MILLS and Sarah TAYLOR (dau. of Cornelius A. and Sarah Ann WALKER TAYLOR). Others say the mother was Margaret TAYLOR. Sarah TAYLOR is still living as of the 1850 Knox Co. Fed. Census. Then Alexander was born in 1850 and she died within a very short period of time, presumably that year and at the time of his birth. The following year I believe it was, Clark "Big Clark" MILLS married Sarah's younger sister, Margaret TAYLOR and began another family. The only other Alexander/Alex/Elec MILLS I know of for that time period was the son of Harrison MILLS, son of Sarah TAYLOR and Clark "Big Clark" MILLS. That particular Alexander MILLS was not born until 1860 and would have been in Clay Co. Abigail also had a sister, Elizabeth and Alexander was either married or had children with more than one person. He was killed at a public meeting in 1887. It is at this point things get a bit murky. I would welcome any knowledge anyone has of what the true situation was regarding Easter MILLS. On the 1900 Knox, here is: Dwelling 255-258 JACKSON, Frank, husband, b. 5-1876, 24, mar. 5 yrs, b. KY; parents b. TN . Easter, wife, b. 10-1878, 21, mar. 5 yrs, 3 born; 2 living, b. KY; parents b. KY . Hobart, son, b. 2-1897, 3, KY . George, son, b. 12-1899, 5 mo's, b. KY Frank or Godfrey F. is living next dwelling to his parents, John L. and Susan M. JACKSON. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA
