My grandmother was Virginia Lee Tye, and she married Bennett Clem of Harlan Co., KY. She died in 1939, about age 30. She had a son, Robert, and a daughter, Thelma (my mother), in 1929. We have no information on her aside from my mother's birth records and a tin-backed photograph of her. If anyone has any information about Virginia, I'd greatly appreciate it. I can only add that she had several brothers, one of whom was named Noble. --Kris

RESPONSE: Cassy, At first I thought I knew who these people were but now there are some questions. First, the Dwelling 304-307, I have different ages from you. Dwelling 304-307 MESSER, Anthony, husband, b. 3-1878, 22, mar. 3 yrs, b. KY; parents b. KY - grocer . . Susan, wife, b. 6-1880, 19, mar. 3 yrs, 0 born; b. KY; parents b. KY NOTE: I have checked for their marriage in Knox, Bell, Laurel, Clay and Clairborne Co., TN but did not locate it. I made the assumption that the husband, Anthony that I had b. abt. 1877, was a child of Allen MESSER, M.D. and his wife, Margaret PAYNE. My thoughts were that this Lucy was Lucy GILLUM/GILLIAM of VA who was b. abt. 1850. Lucy was married lst to Anderson A. Y. MESSER who died bef. 1891 . ON April 23, 1891, Marriage Bond Book M, Page 620 , 2nd marriages for both, C. T. WARREN, 48, b. Knox Co. both parents born in VA and Lucy MESSER age 38, b. VA Here is my problem. I have Cornelius WARREN mar. to Martha MESSER on both the 1870 and 1880. I CANNOT LOCATE HIM ON THE 1900. I have A. Y. MESSER married to Lucinda "Lucy" GILLUM MESSER on the 1880. Then the only Lucy MESSER or WARREN is the one listed as a widow on the 1900. Then on the 1910, here is C. T. WARREN again: Dwelling 115-121 - West Flat Lick, Precinct #6 WARREN, Cornelius, 73, mar. 2 times, mar. 20 yrs, father b. VA .. . Lucy, 58, mar. 2 times, mar. 20 yrs, 5 born; 4 living, b. KY; parents b. VA On her death cert from Carolyn GAMBREL, Cert #29463 WARREN, Lucy, female, white, widow b. 1-14-1850 in Scott Co., VA; d. 4-3-1929 in Knox Co.; age 79 yrs, 2 mo's, 20 days Husband: C. T. WARREN, Father: John GILLIUM, b. VA MOther: Minnia WElch, B. Wales Informant: John McMESSER, Himyar, KY Cause of Death: Aortic insufficiency and influenza Burial: Himyar: 4-5-1929 Now, if this is Lucy GILLIAM MESSER WARREN b. abt. 1850, why is she shown as a widow on the 1900 if she married C. T. WARREN in 1891 and later shows as his wife. Why would she be listed as a MESSER? Where was C. T. WARREN in 1900? Everything about her looks like her but . . . . something is wrong. A possibility is that they separated and she took back her widowed name and then they got back together and in the meantime ol' Cornelius T. WARREN is off somewhere. Anyone have further thoughts on this situation Cassy has brought up Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA Message text written by INTERNET:KYKNOX-L@rootsweb.com >Can someone help me to track down the following two Messer's from the 1900 Knox County Census. Would someone please lookup on the 1910 and 1920 census for John Smith with a wife Lizzie. RESPONSE: I am going to assume you are looking for John O. MILLS, b. June 13, 1862 at Hammond, Stinking Creek, Knox Co., KY; mar. Jan. 26, 1905 in Knox Co. ; d. While Darlene Sizemore and I were indexing the 1930 Leslie Co. KY census, we often had difficulty determining the actual names on the forms. To assist in deciphering some of them, we referred to the INDEX TO KY BIRTHS, among other resources, for guidance to given names, etc. Our index presents the names as we saw them on the census forms. The index, available on cd, is a valuable resource for identifying those born after 1911. HOWEVER, a comparison of the index to the 1930 Leslie Co census, shows many of those early births are not included in the index. I do not know if the same is true of all KY counties but can only verify that many children listed on the 1930 Leslie Co. census were not in the index! This is simply to alert you, that when using the birth index, (which is only a source leading to the actual birth certificate), you may not find the person listed for whom you are looking - for many reasons: 1- typographical errors in creating index 2- misreading of actual birth record 3- birth certificate never filed 4- birth certificate never existed. My suggestion is that you search the index under both the mother's maiden name and the child's name, using any variety of spellings. Be aware that even then, although the person existed, the birth may not be listed! Good luck in your family searching! Hermina Brinkmeier (Dayton, OH) Exploring branches of the family tree!
