Can anyone tell me if they know of Messer's being buried in a cemetery in Flat Lick? I have many of their death certificates that just list the burial as Flat Lick, no Cemetery named so I don't even know where to begin. I'm not really looking for specific burial information as I will go to the cemetery and take photographs, but can someone look in a cemetery book and let me know which cemetery shows them being buried there? Thank you, Happy New Year, Cassy. -- Please check out my new free genealogy site. Let me know what you think while I'm still in the process of building. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~foe3643/

Whitley and Laurel Genealogical Societies have transcribed and published all the cemeteries in their counties. Knox County Genealogical Society has published five volumes and Knox Historical has published three volumes but these were listed in the 1980's and need to be updated. There are so many cemeteries in Knox County that have not been transcribed and these need to be done as quickly as possible due to the deterioration of the stones and many small cemeteries are becoming overgrown and rapidly becoming lost. I have been talking with Ed Elam about the possibility of taking on the big project of transcribing all the cemeteries in Knox County and putting them in printed form for research. WE NEED YOUR HELP to attempt such a massive task. If you have recently copied a cemetery please sent it to us along with the name of the cemetery and good directions to the site. If you are unable to copy a cemetery, send us the name of the cemetery and directions so we can put it on our list. There are so many family plots which will be impossible to find without your help and we do not want to miss any in this attempt to list all of them in the county. Ed Elam lives in Texas and spends his vacations in Knox County and has transcribed Twenty (20) cemeteries so far. His transcription of the CLOUSE CEMETERY is included in this publication. He has transcribed the following cemeteries: ANDERSON CAMPBELL CEMETERY, GRAY, KY CANDLE RIDGE CEMETERY, KNOX CO., KY CLOUSE CEMETERY, GRAY, KY DAVIS CEMETERY, GRAY, KY GRAY'S CEMETERY, GRAY, KY HUTTON CEMETERY, JARVIS, KY JACKSON CEMETERY, CANNON, KY JAMES A FARRIS CEMETERY, GRAY, KY (ALSO KNOWN AS FARRIS CEMETERY) JARVIS CEMETERY, JARVIS, KY JOHNSON CEMETERY, GRAY, KY KECK CEMETERY, GRAY, KY LYNN CAMP CEMETERY, GRAY, KY MARION CEMETERY, GIRDLER, KY MILLER CEMETERY, GRAY, KY NEW BETHEL CEMETERY, CRANES NEST, KY PARK BRITT FARRIS CEMETERY, GRAY, KY (ALSO KNOWN AS FARRIS CEMETERY) PHIPPS CEMETERY, GRAY, KY SAMPSON HODGES CEMETERY, KNOX CO., KY SMITH CEMETERY, JARVIS, KY THOMPSON CEMETERY, GRAY, KY Carol and Norman Anderson have transcribed the KNOX FORK CEMETERY, KNOX FORK, KY Jules and Carolyn Gambrel have transcribed several cemeteries including: HALES CREEK CEMETERY, ROAD FORK, KY MITCHELL CARNES CEMETERY, STINKING CREEK, KY GAMBREL CEMETERY, HARRONS FORK, KY MILLS BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, MILLS CREEK, KY RUFUS BARGO CEMETERY, STINKING CREEK, KY JULIA MILLS CEMETERY, STINKING CREEK, KY CARNES CEMETERY, TURKEY CREEK, KY MILLS CEMETERY, STINKING CREEK, KY DEE CARNES CEMETERY, STINKING CREEK, KY LIGE MILLS CEMETERY, STINKING CREEK, KY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS PROJECT. Hello List, My name is Ed Elam. I would like to add to this article that several people helped me to transcribe most of the cemeteries in my list. After visiting some of the cemeteries in Knox County, I can reaffirm that alot of the older and smaller cemeteries are disappearing. Here is our chance to put together a major work so that these cemeteries wont be forgotten. I have seen to many myself in the short time I have been doing this to realize they are disappearing. If we are to preserve these cemeteries we need to start by leaving a record of there existance along with some way to be able to find them in the future. I would definately appreciate anyones help in this project. You can contact either myself or Maxine with the information you have. Deborah, Knox County does have a Historical society but I don't have the number at my fingertips. I'll look for it though. Denise, how have you been?...haven't heard from you in a while. The Images of America-Brbourville & Knox County book that I have has pictures of Barbourville mostly and some county pictures. Not a whole lot of information but it does have pictures of old schools. There are a few photos of people, mostly buisness men of the town. I grew up near Barbourville so the book is very interesting to me. The books you all are talking about are, "Barbourville, Kentucky, A Pictorial LooK Back," by Michael C. Mills, published by Michael in 1976 or 77, I believe this book is of print. Another book Michael published in conjunction with the Knox Historical Society is "Looking Back with Michael Mills and the Knox County Historical Society, Inc." - this book is mostly about families in Knox County with pictures. I don't know when it was published or is there are copies available. The most current book was published about two years ago and is titled, " Images of America - Barbourville and Knox County," by Michael Mills, published by Arcadia Publishing, Charleston, SC. Copies can be purchased through the publisher's toll free telephone number - 1 - 888-313-2665. Don't remember the cost, but it was very reasonable. These are great books and we should be grateful to Michael for his diligence in collecting old pictures and preserving them. I believe that all of his photos are on file at the Knox Historical Museum at Barbourville on Daniel Boone Drive. Hope this helps. The Historical Society is no longer in existence. The Knox County Genealogical Society is still going strong. They have many publications for sale. The Historical Society was the one that Michael Mills worked with quite a bit. They published a set of cemtery books also. I have seen one set at the Knox County Library in Barbourville. I also have the cemetery books from the Genealogical Society. Both sets look similiar but the content is different in both sets. However the Genealogical Society does not offer any of Michael Mills books that I am aware of. Cassy-- I hope this helps. I have a few directions to some cemeteries I received from a funeral home. It shows two cemeteries of the name Jones. Here are the locations as it reads: "Jones (Girdler): On Hwy. 11 North from Barbourville, go to cemetery behind store beside school." I wonder if this cemetery is also called the Hampton Cemetery at Girdler because the directions sound so similar. The directions for the Hampton Cemetery is: "Go to Girdler from Barbourville. Cemetery is on top of hill across from school to left." I've been there. You actually pass the school on Hwy. 11 and take an immediate right into a short lane that goes back to the cemetery. The kids were at recess when we were there. The fence divides the cemetery and the school property. "Jones (Barbourville): Go about 1/4 mile past Barbourville City Cemetery on Hwy. 25E (going East). On right side of highway." I've been to this one also, however, it has been a few years. We were eating at Wendy's and saw if from the restaurant. It is somewhat behind it. If I remember correctly, there was an abandoned service station with some tractor/trailers on the lot. Then when we were in Barbourville this past summer, we took the street back to the new hospital to see what was back there. This cemetery is back off the road on the right side of this street (west). There was no easy way to get to it. We walked over from Wendy's the year we went and walked through that vacant lot to get there. We had to walk up a small bank to get in it. However, I couldn't see much for headstones this past summer from the hospital road. It may be grown up. Hope this helps.
