I want to help with the transribing of the Cemeteries in Knox County. I already have the one where my father, mother, grandparents, etc. are buried. It's called the Vaughn/McNeil Cemetery on Bull Run Road down below the Dr. Thomas Walker Park. I have one over the hill from that one, the Old Campbell/Elliott Cemetery. It's off Highway 459 also closer to Indian Creek. I will try to get the others in that area copied in the spring. Mary Siler

Does anyone know who the parents are of either Jane Moore or William Messer? They were married according to Marriage book "B" on Aug 19, 1859. The witnesses were Stephen Messer and Mahala Powell. Can someone look in one of the marriage books, if there is one from 1912. I'm trying to find out if Woodson Hughs Jordan m. Lucy Gray d/0 Henry Gray and Rosa Scalf. Woodson Hughs would have been b. about 1840 where Lucy wasn't born until 1892. I know that is impossible, but we just want to make sure we have the correct people. Anybody happen to have any newspapers or microfilm of newspapers for Corbin in 1935? I just glanced at this gentleman's cause of death and found he died of "gun shot wounds." His father was John Norvell of Knox Co. and the informant was Mrs. W, H. Sturgill of Lexington, KY. I would really appreciate any news articles and/or obit for this guy. His date of death was March 5, 1935. Just an added thought - the Laurel Co. Historical Society has cemetery books (by area also.) They included various info such as who the deceased's parents or spouse(s) were. Occasionally some info is found to be incorrect, but overall I think that's a huge value add to any cemetery books. I could pick out the Knox Co. death certs and send copies to anyone who may be interested in the data in them. Let me know if anyone wants the info from these death certs. Cassy, the Davis Cemetery at the Acorn Fork of the Stinking Creek is in Flat Lick.... but I don't remember any Messer's being buried there. I'll double check & let you know. John Davis
Our Family Website; http://www.geocities.com/jaybessieparton THE CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children . Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with checks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age ... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? Or Utah? Or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God Bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... it's now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown ~~~~~~ please forgive us, if you are on more than one list, and get this more than once, it was heart-sent, in kinship,
RESPONSE: I can see the Evergreen Cem. is listed as "Flat Lick". Located above the Old Flat Lick Baptist Church. A Thursey Ann MESSER, b. 1838; d. 1915 and a John MESSER are listed.(no dates on him). The Walker Cem. is listed at New Flat Lick but no MESSERs listed. In my books, all the other cemeteries are simply listed as being in Knox Co. or they list some particular area of Knox Co. such as Roaring Fork, Fighting Creek, Indian Creek, etc. etc. I would not know from just the names of the cemeteries if any of these others listed in Knox Co. would actually fall into the area of "Flat Lick". Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA Message text written by INTERNET:KYKNOX-L@rootsweb.com >Can anyone tell me if they know of Messer's being buried in a cemetery in Flat Lick?
