    1. Re_Marriage Records (Duff: by Phyllis)
    2. G. E. Sonny Vaughn
    3. While in Barbourbille last summer I went by the Knox Historical Society hunting for old Marriage records. I had read in a post to this list, about a year earlier, that all of the early Knox County records had been trashed. The Historical Society does have an index of those early records that they compiled from the original marriage books. The Kentucky Archives in Frankfort does have the LDS microfilms that were made many years ago. However, those records are incomplete as many of the records were damaged by flood, fire and poor handling. The last time I was in Frankfort was three years ago, and I wasn't searching Knox County at the time, but do remember that Knox records were available. One other thing to keep in mind is that the marriage is usually, not always, recorded in the county of the bride and not the groom. That's because the marriage is recorded in the county where it happened, and that is normally the home or local church of the bride. 3. RESPONSE: Hello, To my knowledge on the very early marriage records such as you have listed there, there are no individual actual records. I have a copy of something I copied quite some time ago that had been microfilmed by LDS. It is a simple registery with one line entries. It might be that there were actual records but if that is true they disappeared a long, long time ago. It is from these registers of marriages that the transcribed marriage book (Book A ) was developed. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CBB.2ACE/5146.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello, Here is that David TAYLOR on the 1850 Knox Co.: Dwelling 240-243 TAYLOR, David, 75, b. VA (equates to birth year of 1775) . Mary, 29, b. KY (this was a dau.) You see my gg-grandfather, Cornelius Alexander TAYLOR, b. 1794; d. 1874 was ALSO born in Wythe Co., VA. Also, Jesse TAYLOR, b. 1792 mar. to Nancy GREENE TAYLOR was born in Grayson Co., VA (which was one county formed from the other including Wythe). It changed between the time Jesse was b. and Cornelius was born. Living next to the TAYLOR family were the DICKENSON's and there were marriages there between the family of James CRANK , age 71 from VA and his wife, Eleanore/Ellender TAYLOR CRANK, 68, from VA . Ellender is said to be the sister of my gg-grandfather, Cornelius Alexander TAYLOR. Their first born child, Cornelius CRANK gave pension testimony that he was a small boy and present with his parents are the wedding in 1814 between Cornelius A. TAYLOR and Sarah Ann WALKER TAYLOR. Living very close to David TAYLOR and the DICKINSONs is William McCARROLL, age 87, NC mar. to Elizabeth TAYLOR, 71 b. VA. This is said to be the sister also of my gg-grandfather, Cornelius. They had earlier on lived in Claiborne co., TN. In 1811 (I think), when Joshua BINGHAM went off with Mary DePRIEST (dau. of Martha Patsy TAYLOR and Robert DePRIEST), it is said they went to Claiborne Co. and were married in the home of William and Elizabeth TAYLOR McCARROLL. My Cornelius can first be documented in abt. 1810 in the home of Joshua BINGHAM prior to and after his marriage to Mary DePRIEST per pension testimony. Martha Patsy(28 years older) is said by some to be another sister to Cornelius A. TAYLOR but could also have perhaps been his mother! We really don't know. In one old reconstructed Bible record we have, in one area, someone wrote that David TAYLOR was the father of Cornelius A. TAYLOR and then that was crossed out and someone else wrote that David TAYLOR was a brother and had married a BLEVINS. For sure there was some close kinship of one type or the other among these folks. I think we may all go to our graves without knowing the answer to the puzzles of who was the parent of who when it comes to our TAYLORs. One thing I have learned in genealogy is that when no one seems to have any answers to something that one would think they would, then possibly something is being hidden or not spoken about. There was a lot of "shame" being carried around in those hills . I highly suspect that whoever was the parent/s of Cornelius A. TAYLOR that they died very young and someone else reared him up or . . . he was illegitimate. The mystery continues. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA

Yes, I have talked with another Taylor researcher and there is some confusion between William Robert Taylor and William Riley Taylor! I have been told that William Robert's wife was Sely or Celia with her maiden name possibly as Tinsley. I know of one person who believes that William Riley was also married to Celia Tinsley!! Were there two Celia Tinsleys? I would like to obtain death records for William Robert and Sely because this would possibly show the names of their parents and Sely's maiden name. Also, I have heard various rumors regarding my Taylor family including that we may descend from President Zachary Taylor and that we may have Native Indian ancestry. In any event, they are an enigma to me! Thanks again for your help. Becky

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CBB.2ACE/5146.2 Message Board Post: Hello, I believe that your William Robert has been confused with William Riley(son of Jesse Taylor) A William R. Taylor married Seley Tinsley in 1836 in Harlan County, it has been listed that this is William Riley. I believe that is a mistake, William Riley would have only been 16 at the time of this marriage. also in the 1840 Harlan census Jesse Taylor is listed with all nine of his children. If you check the 1840 Knox county Census you will find a William Taylor listed he has three son under the age of 5. This fits with the age of the sons of William R. Taylor in the 1850 census. I Believe that Seley is the daughter of William Tinsley, and that William is the son of David Taylor. I have no proof of this except the census. Here is what I have 1810 Knox David Taylor William Tinsley 1820 Harlan David Taylor William Tinsley 1830 Harlan David Taylor William Tinsley(one female age 10-15 Listed) 1840 Knox David Taylor William Taylor (three males under 5 listed) William Tinsely 1850 Knox Both David and William are listed. Hope this helps, I have been trying for some time now to proof that William Riley was not married to Sely Tinsley. Pat
