I think the other observation I made was that "most likely" the father, John POTTER, had an earlier family somewhere and than married this Catherine. I don't know that for a fact but marrying at the approx. age of 50 was not the norm in those days. Sarah Messer's parents are Winnie Golden and Moses Messer. I don't have any information on your Baker side of the family. But I have been researching the Messers for about five years. I haven't done much with the Haddock, but there has been a wonderful book published on this family and I can set you up with the author if interested. The newest Haddock book is set to be published I think this year, over 1000 pages of information, and this was done by a professional genealogists. Cassy.

    2. G. E. Sonny Vaughn
    3. In responding to another list member I recalled a couple of other reasons why certificates and documents aren't on file. There is no available record of that event. How many times have you requested a record from a county clerk, state archive or national archive and received the above response? There are any number of reasons and here are the usual culprits that I've come across. In the reasons shown substitute a year value for "yyyy." For xxxxxx substitute marriage, death, birth or divorce as needed. 1. There are no records prior to "yyyy" because of a fire, flood, storm or some other natural calamity. 2. All xxxxxx records prior to "yyyy" were destroyed in "yyyy" due to lack of storage space. 3. The xxxxxx event didn't occur in that jurisdiction. 4. The jurisdiction wasn't required to record xxxxxx event prior to "yyyy." 5. Marriages are a bit more confusing. A. The marriage normally took place in the bride's home or church and is normally recorded in that county. The couple then spent the rest of their life and raised their family in another county. B. One or both were underage, and the parents were opposed to the marriage. So they went to a nearby community in another state where they were over the age of consent and were married there. Case in point, my great-grandmother was fifteen going on sixteen, and her father had already said that he wouldn't agree to her marriage. So she and my great-grandfather went to Jellico and were married in Tennessee, the marriage bond is in the courthouse in Campbell County. If my Grandmother hadn't told me the story I would have never thought to look in Tennessee for their marriage. C. Many states recognized "Common Law" marriages. There is no place that I'm familiar with that requires registration of "Common Law" marriages. D. The marriage was performed by a circuit riding minister/preacher who for whatever reason failed to properly record the marriage in the correct jurisdiction. Surely is cornfusing ain't it? 3. In response to a message I posted earlier on this subject a listmember responded: <snip> I've sent to Frankfort for early marriage records that occurred during the intermittent periods in the mid 1800's when they were being recorded. According to the dates, the records should have been there; however, I was told that they were not. I wonder if they even looked! <snip> Which caused me to ask a couple of cousins that still live in Laurel and Knox counties about common law marriages. One cousin who retired from the Sherrif's Department knew that at least while she was working Kentucky recognized "Common Law" marriages and she sure when Kentucky ceased to recognize "Common Law." "Common Law" marriages were accepted and there were some spousal rights. But there was no requirement to register the marriage. Also many of the early marriages were performed by circuit riders and they may or may not have recorded the marriages they performed. Here in Florida "Common Law" was recognized until the late 1960s. Same deal as above. Church records, where they exist, are still they best source, especially when there are governmental records verifing the church records. Sonny Vaughn
