Surnames: Ohler McHargue Sturgill Norvell Mullins Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CBB.2ACE/5837.2.1.1 Message Board Post: It does seem to me that the OHLERs tended to live along the border between Knox and Laurel Counties - along with the McHargues, the Sturgills, the Norvells and the Mullins. It's pretty tough to research one of those surnames around the Lynn Camp area without starting to take them all on. I also have some Miller, but it sounds like the ones I have may be from a different bunch. Ironically I really only have one OHLER in my db right now. Martha OHLER married Elijah Norvell. He was the son of John Norvell who married Mary Jane McHargue on 16 Jan 1866 in Laurel Co, KY. Elijah's sister, Charlotte Belle Norvell, married William Hugh Sturgill and that particular family moved up to Lexington, KY.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CBB.2ACE/5837.2.1 Message Board Post: Hello, I noticed regarding OHLERS, there was a concentration of them in nearby Laurel Co., kY early on. Here are some marriages listed in that county. Perhaps if you ordered them, "some" connection might come up to your Benjamin OHLER. I am wondering if your Benjamin OHLER was born in TN (as he states on the census) but that his family left TN and perhaps came into KY early on. The only OHLER I can locate is in 1850 Greene Co., TN . He is Christian OHLER; however, only 40-50 years of age with a male bet. 5-10 and not old enough to have had a Benjaminin around 1801. Dec. 16, 1835 OHLER, Alexander to McHARGUE, Elizabeth Feb 1, 1842 OHLER, Reuben to Ann PITMAN Feb. 10, 1870 OHLER, Robert L. to Mary E. CANIFAX Aug 14, 1879 OHLER, Samuel to SPURLOCK, Lucy I would think perhaps this Reuben OHLER might show some promise. As of the 1840 he shows up as bet. 50-60 years of age, with a female of the same age and two males bet. 10-15 and 15-20 . As of the 1830 Rockcastle Co. (which I am not able to read), there is Reuben OHLER listed. At that point, he would have been bet. 40-50 and possibly a father to your Benjamin. Regarding Armistead MILLER, the following is from other's research and I have no documentation on it. They list Armistead with the spelling of his last name as MILNER b. 1754 in Halifax Co., VA; died in 1846 in Lincoln Co., KY and they show that he married on 12 November 1829 in Lincoln Co., KY to "a" Susan OHLER!!!!! This Armistead MILLER/MILNER was first married to a Jemimah BRIGHT b. 1774 in KY; d. in KY; married to Armistead MILNER on 23 July 1792 in Lincoln Co., KY. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA

Just thought I would give you all the early information I could locate on these families in the hopes it might help to clear up some things for you. Regarding Armstead MILLER, on the 1810 KY Fed. Census, these MILLERS are located in Lincoln Co., KY , which if I am not mistaken was one of the counties from which Knox Co. was formed in 1799. You might wish to reconfirm that fact. MILLER, Armstead - page 125 MILLER, Alexr. - page 125 MILLER, David - page 127 MILLER, Jacob - page 126 MILLER, John - page 126 MILLER, Mildred - page 128 In Knox Co. in 1810, there were another group of MILLERS. Regarding the surname, OHLER, as of the 1810, there were no OHLERs in Knox Co. In Barren Co., KY, there was a Geo OLLER - page 33 and a John OLLER on page 33. It is possible it is them or they could have come in from some other state. As of the 1820 and 1830 Knox, still no OHLER/OLLER, etc. families in Knox Co., KY. Of those, it would appear at least four of them could have been her parents. However, as of the 1820 these other ADAMS families have disappeared and/or perhaps been transferred to Harlan Co. rolls as of 1819 formation. In any case, Randolph ADAMS is the most likely parent and he has 2 females under age 10 in his household. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA

    3. The 1850 Federal Census for Knox County, KY lists Benjamin and Susan Ohler and their children, as well as three Herndon youngsters, probably Susan's offspring from her earlier marriage. That census notes that Benjamin was born in Tennessee. A check of the 1840 census (Ancestry.com) shows only one Ohler, Christian, who was in the 40 and under 50 age range. He lived in Greene Co, TN, in the extreme eastern part of the state. I don't know if he was related. It seems that the Ohler name was probably Swiss. There were also several Ohler families in Virginia. I hope this helps a little. Robin Woollum sent in a few pictures of the Woollum Post Office so I have started a new web page with Post Office Photographs. If anyone has a photograph of any of the Knox County Post Offices I would love to add it to the web site. Joyce Collins has sent in the March 23 Barbourville Mountain Advocate Obits and those are now on the web site. Thank you Joyce! Virgil Scalf donated the marriage record of Phoebe Smith and Richard Scalf. Virgil has also donated two more Scalf Death Certificates those of Leslie Scalf and Walter Scalf. Donna Stanfield transcribed the remainder of the Hensley Brides that we missed on the bride index the first time they were transcribe. Joyce Partin Riley has updated the Partin Cemetery and that is now posted on the Cemetery pages. Joyce has also donated the death certificate of Sim Powers. Ray Stewart and Neda Taylor have been back at the 1860 census and pages 110 thru 149 have been transcribed and are now up on the web site. This has been a lot of hard work for them and I really appreciate them doing the 1860 census single handedly. Betty Davenport has transcribed district 50 and most of district 51 of the 1904 school census and both of them are now on the web site. As you can see a big thanks goes out to many folks who have worked so hard to make the Knox County web site the best around. Thank you to everyone! I am simply helping you get started with your family history. My first recommendation to you is that you either order on line or run out and purchase some sort of a genealogy program. This will help you to keep your information organized and will be there whenever you have the time or inclination to return to your family history work. My seond recommendation to you is that you start with YOU. You can then enter your name, your pertinent information, that of a spouse, that of your children, etc. etc. Then you can enter the names and dates of your parents and your husband's folks and so on and so forth and work your way backwards. THANK YOU for providing some specific names and dates for me to work with, I took the time to do some research for you for an hour or so this morning. Amazingly, people make postings with no names and NO DATES and expect you to be a mind reader with over 200 years of records. Here is the information I gathered for you. On your own, you need to explore the many on line resources that are available to you free. Go to the main Knox Co. web site, for example. You will find all the census records from 1910 to 1930 (latest one available) You will find marriage and many other records. On the Message Board for Knox co., you will see a "Search" line at the top left side of the posting menu. You can type in : REYNOLDS or McBEE or any other surname and then click on "Knox". The system will give you all other queries from the past where these names were mentioned. It is a good way to make contact with other researchers interested in your family names. 1930 Knox Co. 2. Charlotte E Flock
    3. I'm looking for a marriage record of William Boyd Short, married to Caroline Wariner or Warren. Their only child, Charles McPherson Short. On Charles death certificate it mentions his parents names.. The closest that I can figure out that William probably got married in the late 60's but no later then 1872, because that's when Charles McPherson Short was born. I have not been able to place William Boyd Short on the 1870 census. So I want to think that he was married after 1870 but no later then 1872. Remember Charles was born in 1872. If anything the marriage could taken place alot eariler then 1870 but not later then 1872. If you happen to have a marriage record book on hand could you please check the index. for William Boyd Short and Caroline Wariner or Warren. Charlotte
