It pretty much appears the two of them lead parallel lives for many years with separate affairs on the parts of both of them. Brice and Alabama TAYLOR MILLS DIVORCE CASE: From the court records of the law suit: "Brice MILLS (brother of Isaac and Felix, all sons of Nasby III and Elizabeth) - Alabama TAYLOR, dau. of Cornelius and Sally WALKER TAYLOR married Brice MILLS on November 2, 1858 in Knox County, KY. Brice filed for a divorce in 1871. On December 23, 1871, Marinda GAMBREL gave her deposition as follows: "Some time before the last May election I was at Brice MILLS' and while there, William SIMPSON was there and I saw William SIMPSON and Alabama MILLS together." (Descriptive details not given in Patsy KOERNER's column , but apparently are available for view.) "William SIMPSON came there a little while after dark and remained there until chicken crow. After that, I told Brice MILLS about it and he drove Alabama off." On March 18, 1872, Brice was taking depositions and notified Alabama of same. Then, again on the 6th day of April 1892, Brice was again filing for a divorce from Alabama! Milton JACKSON, Jr. gave his deposition as follows: "I am 41 years of age; I now reside in Clay Co., KY, and have so resided for the past 5 years. I lived on Stinking Creek, Knox Co., close to Brice MILLS before I moved to Clay County. I have been well acquainted with both Brice and Alabama for the past 21 years." "Before I moved to Clay County, I lived close to Brice MILLS for 12 years. Alabama's youngest child is 13 years old. i don't think, and I speak from my acquaintance with them, and knowledge of their affairs, that they have co-habitated together for the last 13 years. Brice kept plenty for himself and wife both to eat and wear and the abandonment was not the fault of Brice MILLS. Before Alabama abandoned Brice, I was at their house several times and he treated his wife in a kind and aff! ectionate manner." The deposition of Dimcious SIMPSON was taken on April 1892 also. Dimcious said, "I am 49 years of age and live on Stinking Creek. For the last 20 years I have lived tolerably close to Brice MILLS. For ten years with one to one and a half miles and not so close for the past 10 years. Brice and Alabama have been living separately for the last 21 years." "I am intimately acquainted with both of them and I feel safe in saying that they have not cohabitated with each other since their separation some 20 years ago. I was frequently at their house before their separation and Brice provided well for his family in something to eat and to wear. They were poor folks but had plenty of such we on the Creek eat and more. I do not believe Brice was at fault." Brice remarried in May 1892 to Litia GRAY, apparently after the divorce was granted. Alabama, as far as we know, never remarried and lived out her older years with her grandson and nephew. During his working years, Brice MILLS had worked at saw mills, stave mills and was a farmer. Brice died at his home near Mills, Knox Co., KY. It was on a Monday morning Brice MILLS had a child, Lincoln GAMBREL with America GAMBREL (dau. of William "Bill" GAMBREL and Emily SMITH GAMBREL. They were not married. Parentage is established both on Lincoln's death certificate which names Brice MILLS and on Lincoln's later marriage to Lucy HATFIELD in 1932. No proof, of course. On February 10, 1842, William GAMBREL filed a divorce action against his wife, Mahala. He stated they were married abt. December 1838. And about 3 months into the marriage, Mahala up and abandoned him. During the court case, Mahala testified that it was true, she lived with William about 3 months. After a visit with her father, she says she was induced not to return to live with William. The reason being that William had been guilty of adultery with a certain Emily SMITH. In fact, William G. GAMBREL did go on to marry this Emily SMITH on January 15, 1846. During the testimony, one William Shackleford testified that he had heard William GAMBREL make the statement that he would whip his wife, Mahaly off his plantation if she dared come on it. And, . . I think one time I heard William say say that if she did come, he might cut a limb and wear her out. The divorce was granted in March of 1843. In October 1845, Mahala married an older man by about 20 years, one Bradley MERIDA-MEREDITH. From the age of the child, Martha, who is 6 years old (equating to a birth year of 1844, they apparently were living together prior to their marriage. The first 4 children on the 1850 US Federal Census of Knox County, were Marinda, America, Starling and Amanda, all were born the marriage date. Since it is generally known that the marriage between William and Mahala Taylor was short-lived, then who is the mother of these 4 children? Also, what happened to Marinda and America Gambrel? America Gambrel and Brice Mills are listed as the parents of Lincoln Gambrel b. 25 March 1867, died 28 June 1939, in Knox County, and buried in the Gambrel Cemetery, in Knox County. He was married to Abbie Jordan. About the time of Lincoln Gambrel's birth, Brice Mills was married to Alabama Taylor, and in 1870, Lincoln Gambrel was in the home of his grandparents. I would appreciate any help offered here. Thanks in advance. Brenda Hendrickson Cota Scottsburg, Indiana Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. RESPONSE: Hi, They are not complete by any means; however, I have 5 of them and all purchased through the now defunct Knox Co. Genealogical Society. Since they have turned over their holdings to the Historical Society who, my understand was, would regroup and then perhaps carry on their work of having these census and marriage and other books available , I have no idea what the current status is. I wish I could help you. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA p.s. Perhaps someone who lives in the area and is more familiar with the Historical Society could help you further.
