Here is some more: JB Greetings, First, let me say thank you for all of the work that you have done on the Combs &c. Families. You have brought great joy to so many people who have hungered to have some sense of who they are relative to their ancestors. I don't know what it is worth, as it is only anecdotal evidence. Nonethless, I thought that I might share it with you, in case it might be of some value. I am a 2nd great grandson of Fielden (Fielding) Combs and Sylvia Engle who lived in Knott County, Kentucky during the last decades of the 1800s. In 1985, I interviewed my grandfather Herman Combs of Turtle Branch, Knott Co., KY (1923-2005) about his ancestry. He told me a story about his grandfather Fielden and his grandmother Sylvia Engle. According to Herman, Fielden was married to Sylvia, but after some time, Fielden left Kentucky for another state, possibly Virginia. My grandfather claimed that the rumor that had been handed down to him was that Fielden had gotten into some trouble with the law. He was gone for several years. When Fielden returned, he found that Will Thacker had taken Sylvia and her and Fielden's kids into his household. Fielden demanded that Sylvia and the kids go with him, but Will responded, "You go on now. You didn't want them. They're with me now." Fielden left and didn't come around again. His kids -- including my great-grandfather William Combs of Leburn, Knott Co, KY -- were raised in Will's household, and Will and Sylvia had a couple of children of their own together: namely, Cullen, Margaret, Cuba, and Irvine Thacker. Will, Sylvia, William, William's wife Ella Combs (d/o Silas & Silvia Ison Combs), Lee Roy (William and Ella's eldest son), and Cullen all are buried in the Watts Cemetery, Garner, Knott County, KY. My grandfather then recounted the genealogy of his Combs ancestors, as he knew it from his forerunners. Fielden and Sylvia had several children, including William "Bill," Winnie, Lige (Elijah), and Jerry. Fielden, however, had another son not with Sylvia -- a Riley Combs -- who then married a Dyer and had three kids: May, Ray, and Kenton Combs. All of this, he told me before I had seen any of the information at the Combs &c. Website on the appearance of Fielden (Fielding) Combs outside of Kentucky in 1900 and afterwards. Fielden's appearance in Mingo Co, WV in the 1900 Census fits with the story that my grandfather told me that Fielden "left the state." Combs &c. researchers' suggestion that the Fielding Charles Combs who appears in Bath County, Virginia in the 1930 Census and dies there, according to his death record, fits with my grandfather's story that Fielden went "possibly to Virginia." I also find that a child Riley Fuller appears in Fielden's household (as a boarder) along with an adult Elizabeth Fuller (who appears as a servant) and a young Leona Fuller (also a boarder) to be curious, given my grandfather's claim that Fielden had another son, a RILEY Combs, but NOT with Sylvia Engle. I am wondering if the Riley Fuller in 1900 Mingo WV might have been a child of Fielden and the Elizabeth Fuller who is living with him, though I only have my grandfather's story and the odd appearance of what appears to be a mother and her children as "servants" and "boarders" in Fielden's household. Do any of the Combs &c. Researchers know the ancestry of Riley Combs who married Carrie Dyer -- parents of Mae Combs, the same appearing in the genealogy my grandfather gave to me years ago and her brother Kenton [Canton] Combs, for according to my grandfather, his father was Fielden?
