Published in the Hazard Herald November 24th, 2010 **************************************************** Edward Reed Edward Reed, 70, of Hazard, died Sunday, November 21 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was the son of the late Austin Reed and the late Clara Reed. He was preceded in death by brothers Bill Reed and Ernest Reed, and daughter Teresa. He is survived by his wife, Nannie Evelyn Reed; daughters Twyla Napier, Susan Velasco and Daphne Kilburn; sons James Edward Reed, Timothy Reed, Thomas Reed, Terry Velasco, Joseph Velasco, Richard Velasco and David Velasco; sisters Martha Napier and Betty Jo Sexton; brothers Marshall Reed, Gary Reed and James Reed along with a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Tuesday, November 23. The funeral service was on Wednesday, November 24 with Eugene McIntosh officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Hazard. **************************************************** Herman Earl Hammonds Herman Earl Hammonds, 84, of Scuddy, died Sunday, November 21 at Lexington VAMC. He was the owner of East Main Radio and Television Service for over 35 years and served in the Navy during World War II. He was the son of the late Lonnie Hammonds and the late Mae Risner Hammonds Evans. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Carl B. Evans; baby son Timothy E. Hammonds and wife Edna Warwick Hammonds. He is survived by daughters Cheryle Dunigan and Pamela S. Hammonds; son Gary L. Hammonds and wife Gloria; sister Pauline M. Hammonds; brothers J.C. Hammonds and James Hammonds Evans; grandchildren Melissa Dunigan, Michael J. Dunigan, Jennifer L. Hammonds, Katie Mace, Cameron Mace and Chloe Mace; great-grandchild Brandon Dunigan; sister-in-law Jean Hewins and husband Robert; stepchildren Carolyn Tyler, Connie Painter, Buddy Thomas, Mona McBrayer, Nick Thomas and Jane Saenz along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 26. Interment will be at Englewood Cemetery in Christopher. **************************************************** Randall Nantz Randall Nantz, 74, of Garden City, Michigan, died Sunday, November 21. He was the son of Luther Nantz and Grace Campbell Nantz. He is survived by his wife, Janice; children Steven and wife Debra and Shandra and husband Michael Fish; sisters Barbara Gardner and Malissa (Osborne) Burton. He is survived by his son, Johnathan Zachary Bowling of Slemp; daughter Desirea Bowling of Premium, Ky.; brothers Larry and Terry Bowling, both of Cornettsville; sisters Sue Callahan, Laverna Bowling, Jeanette Whitaker and Carol Jones, all of Cornettsville, Imogene Campbell of Linefork, Mary Ann Bowling of Ohio and Bobbie Jean Bowling of Michigan; grandchild Jayda Banks of Premium and a host of family and friends. Visitation will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. on Monday, November 22 at the Big Leatherwood Old Regular Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at the church at noon on Tuesday, November 23 with Teddy Burke officiating. Burial will be at Spencer Cemetery. She was the daughter of the late Hobert Oliver and the late Eva Oliver. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Mart Gayhart. She is survived by daughters Kathy Ann Smith and Alice Elaine Gayhart; sons David Gayhart and wife Su and Edward Gayhart and wife Charlotte Gail; brothers Earl Oliver and Brown Oliver along with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard. Visitation will be at the Upper Lost Creek Pentecostal Church at 5 p.m. on Monday, November 22. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23 with Charles Miller, Crouse Noble and Emmitt Campbell officiating. Interment will be at Gayhart Cemetery at Lost Creek. ***************************************************** Zola Mullins Zola Halcomb Mullins, 69, died Wednesday, November 17 at the Hazard ARH medical center. She was born in Hazard, the daughter of the late Ambrose Halcomb and the late Polly Ann Halcomb. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Mullins; sisters Mary Couch, Clarise Banks and Irene Cress; and brother Elmer Halcomb. She was a homemaker and a member of the Vicco Baptist Church. She enjoyed taking care of all the little children and gardening. She is survived by her daughters, Eva Williams and husband Bobby of Cornettsville and Brenda McIntyre and husband Robert of Viper; brother Benny Halcomb and wife Shirley of Viper; sisters Ruby Cornett of Leatherwood, Geneva Williams and husband Woodrow of Cornettsville and Joyce Engle of Slemp; grandchildren Rebecca Williams, Tonya McIntyre and Tiffany McIntyre; great-grandchild Rebekah Josa Arana and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at the Big Leatherwood Baptist Church on Saturday, November 20 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ronald Davidson and Manuel Grace officiating. Burial will follow in the Spencer Cemetery at Cornettsville. Visitation will at the church beginning at 6 p.m. ******************************************************* Verda Cornett Verda Smith Cornett, 85, passed away on Wednesday, November 17 at the Hazard ARH medical center. She was born in Harlan County, the daughter of the late Dewey Smith and the late Katie Cornett Smith. She was also preceded in death by husband Ben Cornett; brothers Charlie, Curtiss, Harlan and Edward Smith; sisters Ora Milam, Pearlie Tessner, Arlena Halcomb, Mary Lawson and Bonnie Davidson. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, keeping house, sewing, working in her garden and spending time with family. She is survived by her son, Lonnie Cornett; granddaughter Amanda Rogers; great-grandchildren Chloe, Tevin and Devin Rogers, all of Cornettsville, plus a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard on Saturday, November 20 at noon with Rev. Eddie Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Stoney Fork Cemetery at Delphia. Visitation will be on Friday, November 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. ******************************************************* Robert Lee Davis Robert Lee Davis, 77, died on Tuesday, November 16 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was born in Hazard, the son of the late Burley Vincent Davis and the late Lula Price Davis. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Vina Stacy. He was a self-employed mechanic and enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes and spending time with his family. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Stidham Davis; sons James Davis of Bulan, Burley Davis and wife Lynn of Brownsfork and Johnny Davis and wife Debbie of Florida; sister Rose Combs of Covington along with eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard on Friday, November 19 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Clell Miller officiating.
