Published in the Hazard Herald 9 February 2011 ******************************************** Vernon Rice Vernon Rice, 69, of Corbin, died Monday, February 7 at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a retired regional food director employed by McCrory's and the son of the late Leonard Rice and the late Eva Melton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Julia McIntosh, and four sisters. He is survived by sons Bill Rice and wife Gretchen and Michael Rice and wife Sharon; sisters Ruth Riley, Gloria Griffin, Eula Hutchenson, Margie Turner and Norma Maze; brother Leonard Rice, Jr. and seven grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 11. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 12 with Rev. Edmond Bolen officiating. Entombment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Hazard. ******************************************** David Lee Walker David Lee Walker, 56, Shelbyville, died suddenly and unexpectedly Monday, February 7 at Jewish Hospital. He was a native of Hazard and the son of the late Woodrow and Polly Raleigh Walker. David was a graduate of the Kentucky Horseshoeing School in Shelby County and the owner/operator of Walker Farrier Service. He was a member of the American Farriers Association. He was the blacksmith for several world champion American Saddlebred horses and hackney ponies. In addition, he operated Escalade Stables in Shelbyville with his wife, Kathy Capsuto-Walker. Prior to becoming a professional farrier, he worked in the eastern Kentucky Coal Mines as a mine supervisor for many years. His hobbies included making horseshoes and tending his animals. He loved the farm and had accumulated ducks, chickens, turkeys and a swan in addition to the horses, dogs and cats. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Buster Walker and Johnny Walker, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Capsuto-Walker of Shelbyville; daughter Anna Lee Walker of Louisville; brothers Bill Walker and James Walker, both of Ft. Wayne, In; sisters Phyllis Ratliff of Green Rivers, Wy., Brenda Walker of Ok., Patsy Walker, Linda Moore and Gerry Phillips, all of Hazard and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9 and 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 10 at Webb Funeral Home. A celebration of his life service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday. He was born in Covington, the son of Mary Daniels Colwell and the late Ben Colwell. He was a plumber by occupation, and enjoyed working on cars. He was also preceded in death by his son, Ronnie Colwell, and sisters Pauline Thacker and Geneva Reising. He is survived by his wife, Dulcena Colwell of Scottsburg; mother Mary Colwell of Cincinnati; sons Trenton Colwell of Scottsburg and Bubby Thacker of Cincinnati; daughters Kendra Baker of Scottsburg and Monica Ann Pierce of Cincinnati; brothers Kelly Colwell, Burchell Colwell, Robert Colwell, Jerry Colwell, Charlie Colwell, all of Cincinnati, Harold Colwell of Scottsburg, Willie Colwell of Winchester, Suel Colwell, Elmer Couch and Pete Couch, all of Busy; sisters Pokey Daniels, Joanne Jewell and Charlotte Baker of Cincinnati; grandchildren Carolyn, Kaitlynn and Douglas along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, February 8 at the Hickory Gap Pentecostal Church of God with Ed Daniels officiating. Burial followed in the Couch Cemetery in Busy. Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard was in charge of arrangements. ********************************************** McKenna Jade Neace McKenna Jade Neace, infant daughter of Dillon Scott Neace and Brittany Fay Hall, passed away on Thursday, February 3 at the Hazard ARH medical center. She is survived by her parents; maternal grandparents Paul and Debra Gayheart of Bulan; paternal grandparents Dillon and Tammy Neace of Lost Creek; maternal great-grandparents Herman and Christine Grigsby of Bonnyman; paternal great-grandparents Dean and Viola Allen of Illinois along with a host of other relatives. A graveside service was held on Sunday, February 6 at the Grigsby Family Cemetery at Lower Second Creek. ********************************************** Zola Arnold Zola Arnold, 84, of Bulan, died Friday, February 4 at the Hazard ARH medical center. She was the daughter of the late Estill Combs and the late Abby Mosley Combs. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Arnold. She is survived by her daughter Gilda Napier; sons Gary Clay Arnold, Randy Arnold and Rick Arnold; brother Elhanon Combs and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard. A graveside service was held at Curt Napier Cemetery on Sunday, February 6 with Joe Engle officiating. *********************************************** Jamie Engle Jamie Edsil Engle, 75, died Thursday, February 3 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was born in Busy, the son of the late Curt Engle and the late Beatrice Williston Engle. He left Perry County in 1955, but had been residing here for the past 27 years, and was a member of the Willard Pentecostal Church of God. He was also preceded in death by brothers Boone, Albert and Curt Engle, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Orpha Faye Engle of Busy; son Gene Autry Engle and wife Deborah of Germantown, Ohio; brothers Wayne Engle of Grassy, Ky. and Tommy Engle of Vermont; sisters Doris Bowling of Busy, Laura Smith of Hamilton, Ohio and Beverly Baker of Busy; grandchildren Kara Engle, Hope Engle and Emma Rose Engle, along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, February 5 at noon at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard with Rev. Edwin D. Bowling, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Engle Cemetery located at Busy. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, February 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. ************************************************ Charles A. Stofer Charles A. Stofer, 71, of Hazard, died Wednesday, February 2 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He worked as a custodian for the Perry County School System for over 25 years, and was also the son of the late Johnny Stofer and the late Ruby Ison Stofer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Banks Stofer and grandchild Charlie Strunk. He is survived by daughters Melissa Whitley and Wanda Fay Stofer; sisters Saundra Addison, Wanda Bentley and Joann Slaughter; grandchildren Nikki King, Lindsey King, Rex Allen Strunk, Jamie Slone, Kel Slone and Greg Slone; special friends Don Fields, Johnny Cox, Al Holland, Haven King, Punkin Combs, Randy Napier and Jamie Hughes, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 4 with services beginning at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Dulaney Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 5 with Rodney Smith officiating. *************************************************
