Published in the Hazard Herald 2 February 2011 ****************************************** Lonnie Wade Brewer Lonnie Wade Brewer, 60, of Chavies, died Wednesday, February 2 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was a maintenance supervisor for the Perry County Fiscal Court, and was preceded in death by his mother, Nellie Jane Brewer. He is survived by his wife, Irma Brewer; father Robert Combs; daughter Linda Sue Brewer; son Lonnie Brewer, Jr.; sisters Norma, Christine, Sharon and Patty; brother Charles Brewer; grandchildren Stephanie Allen and husband Jeremiah, Trenton Brewer and Hannah Brewer. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 3. Services will be at noon on Friday, February 4 with William Morris and Herbert Hicks officiating. Interment will be at Whitaker Cemetery in Big Creek. ******************************************* Norman Melton Norman Melton, 55, of Jeff, died Tuesday, February 1 at his home. He was the son of the late Charlie Melton and the late Mattie Clemons Melton. He was also preceded in death by brothers Lee Melton and Charlie Melton, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Shirley Elizabeth Melton; sisters Shirley Groler, Sarah Wall, Laura Dugger and Lillie Loretta Slone; special nieces Mattie Combs and husband Tommy and Sherry Lynn Whitehead and husband Danny; special nephew Landon Grace, Josh Slone, Shawn Whitehead and Cheyenne Whitehead; special friends David Bush and David Sturgill and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard. A memorial service will be held at the Maple Street Church of God at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 5 with Rev. Mike Smith officiating. ****************************************** Tucson Herald Tucson Herald, 72, passed away on Thursday, January 27 at his residence in Combs. He was born in Hazard, the son of the late Granville Herald and the late Charity Herald. He worked as a coal miner for Cumberland Elkhorn Coal Company, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Eula Sizemore Herald and eight brothers and three sisters. He is survived by sons Ricky Stacy of Combs and Henry Herald and wife Bobbie of Darfork; daughters Shelia Begley and husband Donald of Bonnyman, Martha Combs and husband Pete of Combs; six grandchildren plus a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 31 at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard with Rev. Merril David Collins officiating. Burial followed at the Lick Branch Family Cemetery located at Combs. ******************************************* Kathey Osborne Kathey Osborne, 43, of Slemp, died Monday, January 31 at her home. She was the daughter of Odis Adams and Hazel Adams. She is also survived by her husband, Timothy Joel Osborne; daughter Wendy Sue Hall and husband Stanley Shawn; son Scottey Joel Osborne and wife Mary Ellen; brothers Rickey Adams and Rodney Adams; grandchildren Austin Osborne, Coby Hall and Emily Osborne. She was preceded in death by brother Jeffrey Adams and Joey Adams. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard. Visitation will be at the First Baptist Church of Big Leatherwood where the family will receive friends after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2. Services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 3 with Cecil Morgan officiating. Interment will be at Beech Fork Cemetery in Leatherwood. ******************************************* Leonard Callahan Leonard Callahan, 85, of Viper, passed away on Wednesday, January 19 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He is survived by his son, Corbin Callahan of Viper; daughter Maxine Shepherd of Viper; brothers Isaac, Jimmy, Harold, Corbin, Jr. and Johnny, all of Indiana; sisters Rose Pratt, Rachel Moffit, Bernice Vanderpool, Vada Tucker and Emily Brancamp, all of Indiana; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Services were held at the Middle Fork Church of Christ on Saturday, January 22 with Mike Hall officiating. Burial was at Ben Cornett Cemetery. ******************************************** Don Short Don Short of Brookville, Indiana, formerly of Hazard, departed this life on Friday, January 21, 2011, at the Veterans Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio being 81 years of age at the time of his passing. Don was born in Hazard, the son of the late Clarence and Mineriva Toler Short. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a retired owner and operator of Don Short Gas Station and Wrecker Service which was on Main Street in Brookville, Indiana for over 40 years and along with his wife, hosted several Larry Sparks Bluegrass Shows at his home, "Blue Bird Hill." He was a member of the VFW Post #2014-Brookville. Don was also preceded in death by his brother, Ray Short. He leaves the following relatives surviving: wife of 32 yearsm Dudie Stewart Short; daughter Emily Powell of Florida; daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Jim Carley of Brookville, IN.; son and daughter-in-law Rocky and Kimberly Stewart of Brookville, IN.; step-son Alan McIntire of Cincinnati, Ohio; step-son and wife Rob and Kelly McIntire of Erlanger, KY; grandchildren Adam Powell, Whitney Stewart, Randi McIntire, Ryan Messerschmidt and Laura Messerschmidt; great-grandson Blaiden Adams; plus a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends survive. Funeral services for Mr. Don Short were held at the Cook Funeral Home in Brookville, Indiana on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 with Pastor Curtis Bond officiating. Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Brookville, Indiana with Military Honors by Bernard Hurst Post #77--American Legion. Visitation was on Tuesday, January 25 at Cook Funeral Home. She was a member of the Happy Freewill Baptist Church for 55 years, and was the daughter of the late Kernel Sexton and the late Maggie Amburgey Sexton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Smith. She is survived by daughters Sharon K. Maggard and Angela and Barry Dixon; son Rodney Smith and wife Karen; special niece Sandra and Sonny Sexton; grandchildren Jody E. Maggard and wife Cassi, Krystal Watts and husband Todd, Bridget Maggard, Eric Smith, Corey Dixon, Adam Dixon and Seth Dixon; great-grandchildren Tate Watts, Preston Maggard, Parker Maggard and Noah Watts. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard. Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 29 at the Happy Freewill Baptist Church. Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 30 with Jody Maggard and Rodney Smith officiating. Interment will be at Resthaven Cemetery in Jeff. *********************************************
