He was a great man who lived a great life. Part of "the greatest generation" that we all owe a huge debt. He trained and led his fellow Marines in battle. He continued to serve as a policeman. He was also a man of great faith who was a leader and servant in the Baptist Church. The Johnson family loved him as a father, husband, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. We will miss you Grandpa!" Eugene Johnson, Sr., 91, died on Tuesday, March 30, 2010. He was born to the late George W. and Mary Clarkson Johnson on July 15, 1918 in Burning Springs, Kentucky. His parents were professors at Berea College, and after the death of his mother, he and his brother, Joseph Johnson, were cared for by his father, aunts, and uncles in Cody, Kentucky, and attended Carr Creek schools. Mr. Johnson entered the Marine Corps on July 2, 1938, and served his country in the Pacific in the 6th Division during WWII and Okinawa during the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corp after 20 years of service. He married Hazel Hatfield in 1939 and of this union were born three children, Roberta, Eugene Jr., and G. David. After Hazel's death he married Vera Banks Wilson in 1986. Survivors include his wife, Vera Johnson; his three children, Roberta Scheel (Robert), Eugene Johnson Jr. (Cheryl), and G. David Johnson (Cecilia); nine grandchildren, Bobby, Ricky, Rodney and Rebecca Pauley, Eugene Johnson, III, Victoria and Joshua Johnson, Patrick and William Johnson; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Vera's family of 4 children Michael Wilson, Timothy Wilson, Dianne Melton, and Linda Phillips; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
