She was born in Winchester, the daughter of the late Roger Alexander and Janice Salyers Alexander. She was a homemaker, a loving wife, a Tupperware consultant and former Black Gold Festival Committee member. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Michael Eric Roark. She is survived by her husband, Randyl Dewaine Smith of Christopher; mother Jan Alexander of Lothair; mother-in-law Ester Irene Banks of Airport Gardens; brothers-in-law Terry Vernon Smith and Donna Lynn of Airport Gardens, Michael Lynn Smith and Nancy Lee of Big Creek; step sister-in-law Donna Gregory; nieces June Madden and Daniel of Hazard and Madison Smith of Big Creek; nephews Darren Smith of Big Creek, David Gregory of Hazard and Lane Gregory and Toshia of Hazard; special friends Karen Jo Farris of Upper Second Creek and Grayson Friley of Yellow Creek, plus a host of other relatives and friends. A Smokey Mountain farewell tribute will be held on Thursday, January 20 at the Christopher Church of God at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fred Ballard and Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery located at Hazard. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19. Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard is in charge of arrangements. ********************************************** Mertie June Powers Mertie June Powers, 61, passed away on Sunday, January 16 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. She was born in Hazard, the daughter of the late Ralph Baker and the late Gracie Miller Baker. She was a seamstress by occupation, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Powers, and sister Pearl Faye Sanders. She is survived by her sons, Frank Young, Jr. of Hazard and Tyrone Powers of Decatur, Al.; daughters Rhonda Cooper, Michelle Powers, Christy Powers and Regina Powers, all of Decatur; brother Earl Baker of Clearwater, Fl.; sisters Linda Baker of Decatur and Barbara Reich of Phoenix; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, plus a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard on Thursday, January 20 at 1 p.m. with Claudie Ray Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Baker Cemetery located at Bonnyman. Visitation will be Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. *********************************************** Virgil Smith Virgil Smith, 90, of Loveland, Ohio, died Sunday, January 16. He was the beloved husband of Ruth (Slover) Smith; father of Kerry (Pat) Smith, Darrell (Donna) Smith, Sharon (Gary) Hall, Sandra (Ron) Hoskins and Elissa (Sherril) Morgan; grandfather of Leslie, Brian, Amy, Gary, Kerry, Lindsay and the late Curtis; great-grandfather of Brandon, Ashley, Brittany, Jordan, Christian, Donovan, Justus, Madalyn, Luke, Tylas and Olivia; and great-great-grandfather of Chandler. Services will be held Saturday, January 22 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Loveland where family and friends will be received from 10 a.m. until the hour of services. *********************************************** Paul Allen Napier Paul Allen Napier, 55, of Hazard, died Tuesday, January 18 at his home. He was employed by James River Coal as a surface mine foreman, and was the son of the late Calaway Napier and the late Goldie Allen Napier. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Napier, daughter April Napier; sisters Sheryl and Mack Brewer and Marie Ackman, along with a host of family and friends. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, January 21. Services will be on Saturday, January 22 with Rev. Granville McIntosh and Rev. Pete Youmans officiating. Interment will be at Neace Cemetery located at Grapevine. ************************************************ Rachel Noble Rachel Noble died Sunday, January 16 at her home in Dayton, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Lodis "Dessie" Noble and the late Elizabeth Gwinn Noble. She is survived by her brothers, Amos Noble and Mitchell Noble. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard. A graveside service will be held at Dessie Noble Family Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 20 with Eldon Miller officiating. ************************************************ Zua Woods Zua Woods, 98, of Viper, died Sunday, January 16 at home. She is survived by her son, James Woods, Jr. of Viper; daughters Jewell Hall and husband Ralph of Viper, Jeanette Minor of Middlesboro and Dorlis Caudill and husband Alvin of Viper; sister Irma Hamilton of West Virginia along with 10 grandchildren and host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19 at the Middle Fork Church of Christ. Services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 20 at the church with Sam Fields and Mike Hall officiating. Burial will take place at Henry Cornett Cemetery. Brashear-Callahan Funeral Home of Viper is in charge of arrangements ************************************************* Sylvia Loretta Clark Sylvia Loretta Clark, 71, formerly of Perry County, died Monday, January 10 at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis, In. She was the daughter of the late Roy T. Higgins, Sr. and the late Marie Combs. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leon Clark; daughter Latonya Lunce; brother Jack Higgins and sister Rebecca Higgins. She is survived by daughters Katherine M. Higgins and Lydia C. Alexander; sons Abdurrahmann Abu-Jebreel, Sherman Long and Luther Long; sisters Martez Billingsley and Peggy Higgins; brothers Herman Higgins, Sr., Roy Higgins, Jr. and Curtis Higgins, Sr. along with 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Monday, January 17. Services immediately followed with Roy Higgins III officiating. Interment was at Town Mountain Cemetery in Hazard. ************************************************** Charles Smallwood Charles Smallwood, 59, passed away on January 15 after a long illness. He was a former resident of Perry County and was born to Alonzo and Elizabeth Smallwood in Leslie County on January 27, 1951. By occupation, he worked in the surface coal mining industry. Through the years he worked for Falcon Coal Company, Arch Minerals, Leslie Resources and International Coal Group. He valued the many friendships with coworkers he had throughout the years. He enjoyed traveling, boating, classic cars, knife collecting and especially spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Bobbie Morgan Smallwood; sons Steve Smallwood and wife Jessica of Hazard; daughter Jennifer McIntyre and husband Bryan of Lexington; grandchildren Kaylee and Kara Smallwood of Hazard; mother Elizabeth Smallwood; brother Senior R. Smallwood and sisters Deanna Napier of Bear Branch and Janet Stidham of Wooton. He was preceded in death by his father, Alonzo Smallwood, and brothers Kenneth and James Smallwood. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 18 at 11 a.m. at the Britton Funeral Home Chapel in Manchester with Billy Joe Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at the Collins Cemetery at Bear Branch. Visitation will be on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. *************************************************
