Virginia H. Combs, age, 98, died Sunday, January 23, 2011 at the Knott County Nursing Home at Hindman, Kentucky. She was born in Floyd County, Kentucky on September 4, 1912 to Sip Hatcher and Maude Spencer Hatcher. She is survived by son: Jack B. Combs; daughter: Nancy (Roger D.) Pack; 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2PM, Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Hindman Funeral Services Chapel with John Shroll officiating. Burial will follow at the John S. Combs Cemetery at Vest, Kentucky. Friends may call for visitation at the chapel, Tuesday from 5-8PM. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Hindman United Methodist Church and Hindman Settlement School. Virginia was married to the late Beckham Combs, s/o John Sylvester Combs and Clarinda Gayheart. His obit is below. Survivors include of 57 years, Virginia (Hatcher) Combs; one son and daughter-in-law, Jack Beckham and Mary (Peterson) Combs pf Grand Rapids, MI; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Roger D Pack of Kettering; four grandchildrenm including Laurea Pck of Eaton, managing editor of The Register-Herald. Nancy, Will you please give us your parents & grands name up to Elhannon? I've spent some time on this family and wanted to add you. Beckham was my superintendent all my school years. I have all good memories of him. Here is a story of Beckham and a teacher told by sister. Their teacher at our 2 room school decided to go to town during school hours to get a hair cut.(Imagine that!!) He laid down the law to all his students. My younger sister and her boy friend started throwing paper wadds and probably other situations occurred. The older sister went into the classroom next door and stayed. Upon the teachers return, someone told on the class. Needless to say he handled the situation like old times and whipped each student with a large thick paddle. Days following the kids then refused to speak to the teacher and he had to call Beckham on the scene, asking the kids to appologize. My sister refused to do as instructed for she said she did no wrong. She and another boy had a paddle broken on them. For many years she told of her hatred for the teacher and the embarrassment for his punishment. Could you just imagine that happening in todays society? I still am amazed some parent didn't bring on the big iron. Later on, I bettcha he considered himself one lucky man to get by with that.
