She was born in Knott County, the daughter of the late Clifton Watts and the late Carrie Franklin Watts. She was affiliated with the Pentecostal Church and enjoyed spending time with her family. Gorman Hazard Herald (Ky) Longtime Hazard Mayor William Dewey Gorman passed away at his home on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Bill Gorman, a true visionary, had been Mayor of Hazard since 1978, overseeing a tremendous period of growth for this eastern Kentucky town. He is remembered for working together with local, state and national officials, regardless of their party affiliation, for a better quality of life for eastern Kentucky. Gorman built and operated the first broadcast television station in eastern Kentucky, which he sold to WYMT in 1985. He also operated a cable television system and had developed real estate. He helped promote the construction of Buckhorn Lake Dam and State Resort Park, making trips down the Kentucky River with friends to gain attention for the neod of flood control. Bill Gorman deeply loved Hazard and the people of Hazard, and he truly felt that Hazard was the best little city in the country. Mayor Gorman is survived by his wife, Nan H. Gorman; daughters Mary Suzanne Gorman and Meriwether Hall and husband Kevin; sons William D. Gorman, Jr. and wife Missy and James Lauchlan Wash and wife Anne; brother L. D. His wife Alieen was our local missionary church worker when I was young. Rufus was of our Farler connection. I don't remember seeing the Hazard obits lately am I overlooking them? Margaret Rufus Varon Halcomb LDN Staff - Friday, June 4, 2010 Rufus Varon Halcomb, 92, of Gainesville, Florida, passed into the hands of Jesus on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. He was born on May 3, 1918 on the right fork of Masons Creek, Kentucky, near the mouth of Bull Hallow. Rufus is the son of the late Millard and Dorcas (Brashear) Halcomb. At the age of about 14 or 15 Rufus became deeply convicted of his sins and asked the Lords forgiveness. It was that night that he put his faith in the Lord, Romans 10:13. Rufus was later baptized in Masons Creek, and when the Calvary Bible Church was organized, he became a charter member and served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and chairman of the church. Rufus attended several elementary schools in Perry County, Kentucky, and was in the first graduating class of Viper High School in 1936. He then attended Cumberland College and Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College, graduating with a bachelors degree in elementary education. He was a teacher at Halcomb School, Acup School and Dilce Combs High School, all in Kentucky. Rufus also taught for 20 years at Mason County Eastern Elementary School in Custer. Rufus married Aliene McVicker in 1957. She preceded him in death on October 8, 2009. Rufus will be greatly missed by his daughter, Ruth (Ben) Spore of Scottville; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Joshua and Benjamin; four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Elliceya, Adison and Xzavier; two step great-grandchildren, Jordyn and Keegan; and sister, Roberta (Walter) Hall of Gainesville, Florida. Funeral services for Rufus will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 8 at Oak Grove Funeral Home with Pastors Jeff and Dina Hackert officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, June 7 from 4- 7 p.m. at the funeral home and again on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until time of service. Smith, age 71 of Marengo died unexpectedly Monday, September 20, 2010 at St. Ann's Hospital following an automobile accident near Sunbury. He was born on September 23, 1938 in Knott County, Kentucky. Formerly of Columbus, he had been a Marengo resident for the past 39 years. A retired finish carpenter by trade, he was a self employed master craftsman, specializing in custom stairways, furniture, and interior trim work. He took great pride in his work and was even prouder when it was recognized by others. His work motto was always "quality not quantity". An avid golfer, he enjoyed collecting and tinkering with different golf clubs. Always a fisherman, he especially enjoyed fishing the waters of Florida. He also had a passion for the banjo and playing Blue Grass music. He was always up for a cup of coffee, all day long. Gentle, quiet, and even tempered he treasured his family, especially his grandchildren. He taught his family to be mindful of the work taken to earn each dollar before spending it. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years: Dean (Slone), daughter: Teresa Rinehart of Marengo, his big and little babies grandchildren: Matthew Rinehart (fiancée Desiree), Morgan (Angie) Rinehart, Greatgrandchildren: Aubry and Reece. He was preceded in death by his mother Gladys (Smith) Williams. Friends may call 6-8 p.m., Friday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR's 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m., burial will follow in Marengo Cemetery.     2. In loving memory of Jimmy "Burgey" Amburgey, 60, of Guilford, Indiana who died Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at his residence. He was born at home on June 10, 1950 in Kings Creek, Kentucky to Cleave and Lonnie (Fields) Amburgey. He moved to Indiana around the age of 16 and remained here for the rest of his life. He was employed with River Road Auto Parts in Cincinnati, Ohio for 35 years. He worked for Mel Shapiro who was not only his boss but a good friend. Jimmy lived and breathed cars and trucks. Whether buying and selling, or trading and junking, automobiles were his true passion. It was also how he provided for his family. Survivors include his Wife of 34 years, Debra (Wells) Amburgey of Guilford; three Children whom he loved very much, Samantha Amburgey (Alan Schilling) of Yorkville, Indiana, Shane Amburgey of North Hogan, Indiana and James Amburgey (Stephanie Uhl) of Yorkville, Indiana; and one very special Granddaughter, Grace Amburgey, who turned his world upside down; three Brothers, David Amburgey and Danny Amburgey, both of Yulee, Florida, and Grover Amburgey of Kentucky; six Sisters, Marie Parker and Janice Ratliff, and Diana Parker, all of Yulee, Florida, Sara Lee Amburgey of Ohio, and Glady's Amburgey of Kentucky; and many Nieces and Nephews, including a special Nephew, Johnny Ray Amburgey of Rainford, Florida.
