She is survived by a brother, Thomas Alton Crouse of Bristol, NH, and a sister, Ruth Gribbs of Bassett, Va., and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her to heaven were four brothers: Talmadge, Everett, Herman and James Crouse, and two sisters: Ruby Jacobs and Alma Michael. She left the Sparta, North Carolina home place first to attend boarding school at Glade Valley, then it was off to Appalachian State at Boone, NC where she enrolled with the idea that she would become an elementary school teacher. She returned home before the end of the year, convinced that she lacked the patience to become a good classroom teacher. Anyone who has experienced her use of a hairbrush to spank a rowdy child would agree. Instead, she moved to Iowa to assist her aunt and uncle in running their house and trucking business. She returned to North Carolina a year or so later when four of her brothers enlisted in the U.S. Army, Navy and the new Air Corps to do their part in World War II. She volunteered in the Signal Corps and was sent to study electronics, first at the University of North Carolina, then North Carolina State, Duke and finally Georgia Tech. Once trained, she was sent to Dayton, Ohio where she turned civilian materials into military materials to build airplane wings in a converted auto factory. She lived in a nearby boarding house where she met her first husband. Richard "Dick" Crowe had returned to Ohio from Texas where he had been racing motorcycles and selling workman's compensation insurance. His wartime job was being a supervisor in a converted Frigidaire plant that now made airplane propellers. When she first saw her husband-to-be, he was wearing a zoot suit going out to a party. Elvira said, "Now there's a man that needs my help," and marriage followed in 1943. >From that marriage came three children: Richard, Jr., then Robert, and finally a daughter, Deborah Lynn. Robert served three stints in Vietnam aboard the Navy's USS Bonham Richard aircraft carrier. Both Richard Sr. and Robert died at age 56. Richard Jr. and Debbie survive. Also surviving are twin granddaughters: Crystal and husband Dale Farler with daughter Kennedy and Madissyn of Hyden, and Candi and husband Doug Engle and children Ashton Whitaker and Cody Engle of Rowdy. After Richard Sr. died of pneumonia, Elvira continued operating their family furniture and electronics store in Brookville, Ohio. Several years later she met her second husband, Roy Brooks, a farmer. They married, he sold the farm and Elvira closed the Brookville store. Together they operated an antiques store until Roy passed away. Elvira closed that business and retired for a few years. Bored, she volunteered as a candy striper at a Dayton hospital where she was judged to be their volunteer of the year twice in a four year period. She then decided that volunteering was costing her too much in travel, food and expense money. To break even on her working costs, she worked at minimum wage jobs, first at McDonald's, then Sears, and finally for Walmart where she worked in the hardware department for over five years - into her 90s. As she aged beyond that point, dementia set in as she lost her ability to hear. She came to Hazard Nursing Home to live out her years, which ended at 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Her roommate during those final years was Ellen Bailey, who also survives her and served as a very special friend, always keeping an eye on Elvira until life left her at age 93 years and 11 months. While on this planet, Elvira traveled widely, raised a family of her own, was a good sister and daughter, practiced genealogy, learned to play the organ in her 70s, moved in with a dying friend to support her last few years and served her church regularly as secretary. Elvira, you lived a rich, long, fulfilling life. We - your family and friends - will miss you as you move on to a better place; to be in heaven with our Creator. ********************************************************* Freddie Knott County Kentucky Kinfolk http://knottkentuckykinfolk.com/ What I kept I lost, What I spent I had, What I gave I have. 1. [KYKNOTT] Ky Historical Society Closing for Winter Months
    2. The Kentucky Historical Society history campus, which includes the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, the Old State Capitol and the Kentucky Military History Museum at the Old State Arsenal, will close from Dec. 12 through March 11, 2011. Budget cuts brought about by the state's economic crisis and the critical need for an up-to-date inventory of the society's 500,000 museum and special collections prompted the change in schedule, according to a press release from the KHS. The revised schedule will allow the collections staff to focus on this responsibility during the off-peak season when visitation is low, ensuring significant headway in cataloging these collections and in making them available online. The new schedule is expected to be in effect through 2013. However, the following public services will continue year-round: ■ KHS will be available to schedule visits for groups of 10 or more people with at least seven days notice of the visit from Dec. 12-March 11, 2011. ■ KHS will be open for second-Saturday programming on Jan. 8 and Feb. 12, 2011. On these dates, KHS will offer genealogy workshops in partnership with the Kentucky Genealogical Society, as well as scout programs and teacher-training workshops. The Martin F. Schmidt Research Library at the Center for Kentucky History, KHS exhibitions and the 1792 Store will also be open, along with tours of the Old State Capitol and the Old State Arsenal. ■ Outreach programming including the KHS HistoryMobile, Kentucky Junior Historical Society/National History Day program, KHS Museum Theatre, oral-history technical services, KHS Museums-To-Go exhibits, Kentucky Folklife Program traveling exhibits and field research, historical markers and work with the Civil War and War of 1812 related sites and museums will also be ongoing. ■ Reference services will continue to be available through the library by mail, email and by telephone. ■ Rental services will continue to be available at KHS year-round. Beginning March 12, 2011, KHS will resume regular public hours, which are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.Taken from the Lexington Herald on Nov 4, 2010

********************************************************* Freddie

    1. Re: [KYKNOTT] [KyPerryKnott] OBIT - Shirley Lyson - Father was a Sparkman
    2. Freddie, HA HA!! hehe Actually, the KyKnott list was bouncing my posts a couple of weeks ago. I'll send this to them and see if it goes through. I guess there are so much span flying on the internet and probably we should be glad that Rootsweb is catching the unwanted posts. But in the mean time people like you and me also get bounced some. I'm administrator of the GABBARD list and I have to delete more spam that Rootsweb catches now than I used to. Lynda In a message dated 11/3/2010 9:45:03 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, jwilson2022@tampabay.rr.com writes: Hey Debbie, I'll be sending out the Hazard Herald Obits later today. I will include both the kyknott and kyperry mail lists and see if they bounce. Lynda's list is about the only one acting sane right now and what could we say that about Lynda? hahaha Freddie From: _dmsst_ (mailto:dmsst@woh.rr.com) Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2010 8:50 AM To: _KyPerryKnott@yahoogroups.com_ (mailto:KyPerryKnott@yahoogroups.com) Subject: Re: [KyPerryKnott] OBIT - Shirley Lyson - Father was a Sparkman Freddie: I tried Monday to send something to Knott mailing list 5 times and it bounced. Finally gave up and I'm the administrator on the Knott list. It's probably just rootsweb.com messing around with their spam and bouncing mechanisms. Rootsweb's response to these bounces is to just keep trying, I'm not that patient.
