He was a great man who lived a great life. Part of "the greatest generation" that we all owe a huge debt. He trained and led his fellow Marines in battle. He continued to serve as a policeman. He was also a man of great faith who was a leader and servant in the Baptist Church. The Johnson family loved him as a father, husband, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. We will miss you Grandpa!" Eugene Johnson, Sr., 91, died on Tuesday, March 30, 2010. He was born to the late George W. and Mary Clarkson Johnson on July 15, 1918 in Burning Springs, Kentucky. His parents were professors at Berea College, and after the death of his mother, he and his brother, Joseph Johnson, were cared for by his father, aunts, and uncles in Cody, Kentucky, and attended Carr Creek schools. Mr. Johnson entered the Marine Corps on July 2, 1938, and served his country in the Pacific in the 6th Division during WWII and Okinawa during the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corp after 20 years of service. He married Hazel Hatfield in 1939 and of this union were born three children, Roberta, Eugene Jr., and G. David. After Hazel's death he married Vera Banks Wilson in 1986. Survivors include his wife, Vera Johnson; his three children, Roberta Scheel (Robert), Eugene Johnson Jr. (Cheryl), and G. David Johnson (Cecilia); nine grandchildren, Bobby, Ricky, Rodney and Rebecca Pauley, Eugene Johnson, III, Victoria and Joshua Johnson, Patrick and William Johnson; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Vera's family of 4 children Michael Wilson, Timothy Wilson, Dianne Melton, and Linda Phillips; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Evelyn Robbins asked me to let everyone know of the passing of her aunt on Thursday. Lola Maxine (Reynolds) Sparkman was born June 4, 1931 at Mallie Kentucky (head of Smith Branch) and passed away April 8, 2010 at Hospice of Dayton Ohio. Burial will be April 13, 2010 at the Woodland Cemetery Dayton, Ohio. Her death was due to pancreatic cancer. Her life here on earth was 78 years 11 months and 8 days. Proceeding her in death are her parents Isaac Newton "Ike" & Nancy Ann (Campbell) Reynolds. One child: Pamela Gail Jinks. Four sisters: Velma Taylor, Clova (Adams) Lowe, Marie & Molly died in infancy. Three brothers: Paul, Charles Ray & Woolery John "T.J." We were sad to lean this news yesterday morning. Margaret COMBS, Ira Herbert March 5, 1929, gently passed away in his sleep on April 3, 2010 at 1:30 AM. He was 81 years old. Herb was raised in Viper, Kentucky. He served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, before settling in Middletown, Ohio. He retired after 35 years with the Middletown Paper Board Company.He was preceded in death by his parents, Dee and Judy Combs; by his wife, Dorothy; and by his siblings, Oma Farler and Dick Combs. Herb will be missed by his sister, Irene Caudill Swift, and his brothers Henry, Dale, and Dave Combs. His many nieces and nephews and stepdaughter, Judy Clark, and granddaughters Vanessa Grooms and Jessica Kilgore, will miss this dear man. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, April 5, with visitation from 1:00 - 2:00 PM, at the Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home. She was born April 19, 1927, in Dema, the daughter of the late Lee & Mary Darcus Little Thornsberry. She was a homemaker and the wife of the late Johnnie Mullins. She is survived by 4 sons: Jackie (Mazie) Mullins of Topmost, Ray (Cindy) Mullins & Johnny (Ruby) Slone both of Dema, & Lee (Gracie) Morgan of Ind.; 3 daughters: Bonnie (Gene) Hall of Iowa, Faye (Buck) Humble of Allen, and Rose (Paul) Huff of Frenchburg; 2 step sons: Raymond Mullins & Dingus Mullins both of Michigan; 27 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 son: Lonnie Mullins; 1 daughter: Susie Sexton; 1 step son: Jimmy Mullins; 4 Grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 2 brothers & 2 sisters. Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home at Martin.
