Vivian, there's a famous artist named Carl Schmidt who worked at the Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, painting vases and plaques. However, I don't know if this is your Carl because my Rookwood reference books are in storage right now while we build bookshelves (wouldn't you know it). However, you might try your local library or a book dealer with books on Rookwood to see if you can find bio information on that Carl Schmidt. I don't know if he died in 1916 or not, but know that some of his work is dated early 1900's. Maybe he's the son of your Karl/Carl, however. Anyway, if the Rookwood painter is your Carl, you might see his work in a good gallery that handles Rookwood (Cincinnati Art Galleries or Treadway Gallery in Cincinnati) or at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
