    2. LeeAnn, I don't know the exact year that addresses were normalized in Covington (but I'll bet that the Kenton County Library can tell you), but the address of my family home on Main Street changed from 943 in the 1910 census to 929 in the 1920 census - and 929 is what it is today. Darla

    1. Kenton County Property Records
    2. miriam
    3. Hello everyone! I have a quick question. Does anyone have any suggestions on individuals that are experienced at finding early Kenton County property records? What year did the street numbers become normalized? I think in Cincinnati it was 1896 and I thought it would be a similar time in Covington, but after going to search at the Kenton County Court House, I know that's not correct. I traced 1428 &1430 Banklick Street all the way back to 1882 and it didn't have any Brink ownership. Members of the Brink family lived at these address' per birth, death and will records, as well as directories, for atleast 25 years straight. I doubt they were renting for that length of time or giving the properties away in wills! So, I'm assuming I can't find it because the address changed when the normalization occurred. Also, the Court House is set up for you to be able to search by address, but only if the residence is still standing. Any suggestions on how to search for residence! s that have since been demolished? I'm now fleshing out the Heving Family History and trying to find interesting information to add to the history. Wishing you luck in all of your searches! LeeAnn McNabb Cincinnati, Ohio

    2. All the later marriages referred to earlier in this index book refer only to "Marriage Book #1 Kenton County, Covington, KY" and on the front page of the marriage section it specifically says, Kenton County, Kentucky, Covington Courthouse". There are other records indexed for Wills, Deeds and Inventories, and Guardian Bonds which are specific to the Independence Court House, as well as some earlier marriages indexed by Marriage Bonds. 3. Cautionary note. Remember that there are two court houses. Because I was always interested in marriages in the Independence area I always visited that courthouse but never did visit Covington. It is possible that the records are not duplicated in the two court houses. As I recall the actual books are indexed by first letter of surname and by bride and groom. Maybe with current technology a digital photograph exists of the original book. ----- Original Message ----- From: <AnnBergelt@aol.com> To: <KYKENTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 07, 2006 1:10 PM Subject: [KYKENTON] Example of Kenton Co. index information > All; > > Earlier, Darla asked for a look up in the Kenton County Index Book #1 for > the marriage on July 12, 1865 in Covington, between Sophia Runge and > William > Hartman(n). > > I don't know if you prefer to call this a good example or a bad one, but > it > does illustrate the problems sometimes associated with using this > resource. > > The marriages in the index run from 1863 to 1876. 1. Example of Kenton Co. index information
    2. All; Earlier, Darla asked for a look up in the Kenton County Index Book #1 for the marriage on July 12, 1865 in Covington, between Sophia Runge and William Hartman(n). I don't know if you prefer to call this a good example or a bad one, but it does illustrate the problems sometimes associated with using this resource. The marriages in the index run from 1863 to 1876. Names of brides and grooms are alphabetized in the back of the entries, but the actual list is done by date. So, I first checked the index. There are only two Hartman(n)s listed - August and Joseph B. There are three RUNGEs listed - Carolina, Elizabeth and William J. The page numbers given for all those names indicated the pertinent marriages would have taken place more recently than 1865. But, since Darla had also given a marriage date, I looked in the pages in chronological order and there was: Kenton County Marriage Book #1, Covington, KY page 24: William HARTMAN age 33, tailor, married Sophie LONGE, age 36. They were both residents of Covington, both born in Germany, all parents also born in Germany, and the index says it was a 2nd marriage for each of them. For any further information, you would have to get the record, and possibly also a church document. So, you can see potential problems with this book. Although William Hartman was not in the index, he was clearly listed with the marriages. And Sophie/Sophia's surname was probably mistranscribed from Runge to Longe - that's another common problem. At any rate-- good luck with your continued search! Ann Bergelt The license was issued on 7/18 and the marriage took place on 7/23/1865.

    1. Re: [KYKENTON] Kenton Co. marriage books
    2. All; The Kenton County Index Book #1 was compiled by a man named William Hoffmann. I believe it is now out of print. Keep in mind as well that it is rather restrictive in time frame and possibly does not have all marriages, etc. listed ( I don't know why, but I've not found some that people said should be there). I saw one, probably in the Kenton Co. library a few years back, that was a continuation of this collection, but have never been able to find how to get a copy. Mr. Hoffmann, I think, is deceased now. Best wishes, Ann Bergelt Florida

I was there from 1967-1970 and she was the Dean at that time. I believe she retired during that period of time and Shirley Browder became dean.
