    1. Re: [KYKENTON] Death record
    2. Darla; thanks for all the recommendations, but I'm not sure I haven't already exhausted all those possibilities in previous trips to the Covington area. At one point, someone recommended I check St. Joseph's Cemetery in Cincinnati for the early death of Patrick Keary/Carey -- but he wasn't there either. What I'm trying to find out about the Martin Carey who is buried in St. Mary's (1891) is just verification that he was indeed the son of Ellen and Patrick who was born in Ky, and also whether or not he might have been married. In 1891 he would have been 24/25 years old. Thanks, Ann

    1. Re: [KYKENTON] Death record
    2. Ann, if your family lived on W. 5th Street and is Irish, you might try finding records from old St. Patrick's Church that was at 4th and Philadelphia Streets in Covington from 1872 to 1967 (now torn down). These might be on the Kenton County library site also, but I'm not sure. The church was founded too late to have death info on Patrick abt 1864, and if he died in the Covington area, St. Mary's founding in 1870 would be too late for him unless he was moved there from another site. Mother of God cemetery and its predecessor, Buena Vista, might be possibilities for Patrick although they usually held German Catholics (but who knows - there might have been room for others too!). For Patrick's death, then, I'd try Mother of God or Linden Grove cemeteries. For the neighborhood where your people lived, St. Patrick's was the "Irish" church and Mother of God was the "German" church. No guarantee on this, but when I've visited the Kenton Co. library I've looked at a microfilm reel that holds earlier death records and might have Patrick's death on it. You could email Dave Schroeder there and ask for a look-up. What are you trying to find out about Martin Carey? Darla

    1. Re: [KYKENTON] Death record
    2. Darla and all; Thanks so much for the offers of help in this matter. Martin Carey has been a mystery in my family research for quite a while. I have verified most of the family info - but finding him buried at St. Mary's Cemetery was a surprise. It was listed on the Kenton County library records site. On some of my visits to the area, I have gone to St. Mary's Cemetery. I did not see any reference to his burial before, and the family members who are buried there apparently have no markers. Ellen (Nellie) BYRON and Patrick KEARY/CAREY were married in Co. Galway Ireland in the early 1850's. Their children, born in Ireland, were (my great-grandfather) Lawrence and Maggie (Margaret), Thomas, Michael, and Martin. Apparently Lawrence was the only one of the siblings who married. Before they left Ireland, there was a son named Patrick born in 1864. Apparently, he died, as he is not found in any further records. The first US census they are found in is 1870 - in Covington. Nellie KEARY was widowed, but there is a son, Martin, born in KY - three years old. Baptismal record shows he was born October 1866. He also shows up in 1880 aged 13, last name CAREY by then. The father, Patrick, is not found in any reference at all after they came from Ireland about 1864/65. He must have died about the time Martin was born, but I also have found no reference to his death or burial. Nellie was a widow in the 1870 census. I have found records for the family at St. Mary's Basilica in Covington. Nellie and daughter Maggie remained in Covington until they both died. The address on census records and Nellie's death record is 77 W. Fifth St. Maggie died as a resident of the "Old Ladies Home" on Garrard. I have done much research on the family and have most of the necessary records -- it was just a surprise to find reference to Martin CAREY at St. Mary's, as I have looked for him before. My grandfather, Lawrence's son, was also named Martin Carey -- apparently for the one I'm trying to find. Your help and suggestions are much welcomed! Ann

    2. Ann, if you find the address of your ancestor from the 1880 census and let the list know, I or one of the others who grew up in Northern KY might be able to help you narrow down a search for nearby Catholic churches. Darla The Woodlands, TX

    3. Hi Ann, I am sending this message both on and off list because I am not sure the e-mail list won't block the website address. You will want to request your record through the Kenton County Public Library. Go to this address: http://www.kenton.lib.ky.us/genealogy.html There are two main links right at the top of the page you will want to use to search for your ancestor. "Newspaper Index Northern Kentucky" and "geNKY Northern Kentucky Genealogy Indexes". It looks like the deaths for 1891 may not yet be indexed but you might find your ancestor in a newspaper obituary, St Elizabeth hospital records, cemetery records and possibly other items. Once you have a list of possible sources you can get the library to copy anything you need including the Covington Death certificate for a very reasonable fee. Library contact information can be found here: http://www.kenton.lib.ky.us/contactus.html Daryl On 5/16/05, AnnBergelt@aol.com <AnnBergelt@aol.com> wrote: > > Hello, all; > > I'm looking for a death record which occurred in 1891 (October). 3. I have been successful finding death certificates before 1900 by writing the vital statistics dept. in frankfort. It's hit or miss before 1900, but those death certificates are out there. If you know exact date of death, you could be in luck with the vital stats people. Also, if your person was buried from one of the churches in kenton co., you may find record of death in church records. I have tracked people down that way as well. From the censuses I get their neighborhood and start searching the nearest churches from there. Looks like your person was catholic, so this could be easy but time consuming. 1. Loss of Funding for Important Archival Institutions
    2. My friends - I was made aware a few days ago of budgetary cuts recommended for FY 2006 that will directly affect our ability to continue to see further advancements in digital conversion of all types of records(including those related to genealogy and history). This will affect the National Archives & Records Administration, as well as the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, both of which are mainstays in the efforts to preserve and make available our national, state and local records. Below is the news release on this matter. You can see that some very influential groups, including the American Society of Archivists, of which I was a member for a number of years, are reacting to this budget cut proposal. While I rarely suggest on any list which I host that our subscribers become involved through the petition route or by other means, this situation is one that must be corrected before it occurs. The means and sites to express your opinion, if you care to do so, is included in the message below. -B ==================================================================== The President's budget recommendations for Fiscal Year 2006 slash or eliminate more than 150 federal programs. In that budget, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has been targeted to receive NO funding. This includes no funds for the grants program and no funds for staffing to support the NHPRC programs. It effectively eliminates NHPRC. The Council of State Historical Records Coordinators, the Society of American Archivists, and the National Association for Government Archivists and Records Administrators are working collaboratively to address this threat to NHPRC and NARA. Archivists across the U.S. are rallying to save NHPRC while also ensuring that NARA has sufficient funding to sustain its current programs and continue to advance in areas that benefit all archival repositories and every citizen of the United States As part of our efforts to continue to express to Congress interest in restoration of funding for NHPRC, we have created an online petition. Please consider signing this petition, and please forward it to any listservs, e-mail groups, or organizations and people you feel would be interested in helping with this effort. It is a quick and easy way for many people to assist. The petition will be forwarded to the House Appropriations Committee and Subcommittee on Treasury, Transportation, HUD and the Judiciary in late May. The petition can be access at: www.savearchives.org Click on the "petition" button. If you have not received a previous action alert on this issue, we encourage you to also write a letter to your members of Congress. For information on writing letters of support, see any of the following websites: www.savearchives.org www.coshrc.org www.archivists.org Thanks for your efforts to save this important program for archives! 2. Yes birth dates should be backed up by birth records absolutely...but she had information confirming two different dates and needed more info, so looking at the census records would be the easiest to locate...they would also give her more info regarding his brothers and sisters... His parents were found on the 1880 Kenton County, KY census and so tht will give her a place to start....

    2. Hi, All; I saw something go by that mentioned the birth dates given on census records. That's true, and might even be correct -- but there's always the chance the census information is "off" for several reasons. It's always the best idea to back up such information with the actual birth record. Best wishes, Ann Bergelt Florida

    2. Hello All...Dear RH Bennett... Because this was gatewayed to the KYKenton-L list I am replying to both email addresses....may help someone else with the answer as well.. Since he was born prior to the 1880 Census you should be able to go to that census, at any Family History Center (FHC), located near your home and find him listed with his family... Then you should be able to order the 1900 Soundex for this family name and see if you can find them as adults...It will tell you where they live and you should be able to find the men with their families if they have married... You are going to have to check all different kinds of records to find all the bits and pieces that will lead you to the family... If you can find out his parents where and when they died and are buried, you might be able to get an obit that will tell you names of survivors...this may include some of the sisters with married names and where they lived, that will lead you to them as well... If you can find them on the Soundexs for the 1900 Census, 1910 Census, and 1920 census it will help you to follow them as they grew older.... Hope this helps any of you that are dealing with trying to find your Ancestors as this kinds of research gets results... there are also court records that you can read through and some of them are indexed as well...you will be surprized at what some of the Wills can tell you, and they are filed with the Court....LINDA...
