There is a new virus that is being sent as an attachment called "Happy New Year.exe". Do not open this file thinking it is from a well wisher. Many of the e-mail type viruses are not even being sent as an attachment. Microsoft Explorer used by many including AOL 5.0 can transmit a virus without an attachment! At this time the mail client in Netscape 4.7 and 4.6 offers the only protection from this problem. Several different strains of virus infect a computer, invades your mail client and forwards on the virus to person's whom you send mail. The good news is many of these pesky people who create viruses are being caught as tracing is becoming much easier. I suggest that if you want to send information, contact the person in advance of your intentions and ask if its okay? Let them know what you are sending by file name, size and time. It is also a very good idea to keep your DAT files updated every two or three weeks. The Dat files are the files used by your virus protection program to detect and clean a virus before any harm can be done. Most virus software now allows you to turn on what is called a virus shield that protects you from infected e-mail and various other areas while you are online. I can not tell you how important it is to understand how your virus software protects you. Take 10 minutes if you have not already and read up on your version of Virus protection software and how to keep it current.
