Ann, My grandmother has passed on this tradition to me. We make ribs and kraut (with a hidden quarter in it) to have just after the new year rings in at midnight. Then pork (roast, ribs or other product) with kraut or cabbage for dinner New Years day. The tradition with the quarter is that the person that gets it will have lots of money in the coming year. My grandmother was from Van Lear, her father from Lawrence County and her mother from Hazard, Kentucky. I am not sure if the tradition came from her YOUNG/THORNSBERRY side or if it came from the HITCHCOCKs which were from Denver.
