Hi there. My gggrandfather was Isham Bayes, his daughter Alsie jane was married to Elijah Collinsworth. They lived most of their lives in the Salyersville area. My grandmother who was a Prater lived in Paintsville. Ever heard of Isham?? Thanks. Bonnie
Dear People, I have been reading all the condemning statements being made about Loretta Lynn regarding this cemetery. The cemetery should be a historical site of interest for many people, including those people who live in Johnson County, those who travel to Johnson County because they are fans of Loretta Lynn, and because the Webb and Butcher families have been there so long and their histories and some of the history of Johnson County will live on because of the book and the movie, Coal Miner's Daughter. Johnson County didn't make Loretta Lynn famous her talent made her famous. On the other hand, Loretta Lynn has made Johnson County famous. Maybe the people of Johnson County or the historical & genealogical societies in Johnson County could pay homage to Loretta and her family by setting up work weekends at the cemetery on a regular basis. Someone already noted that the man who usually takes care of the cemetery has too much work to do alone and is becoming an age where it is not as easy as it might once have been. Where is Christian kindness in this matter? How about offering to help the man clean up the cemetery? Nothing is accomplished when you sling dirt, except you are left with the dirt you intended for others on your own hands. And the cemetery still sits there in an unkempt state. Very very sad. Sincerely, Wendy
Hi Candy, This is Donna , again!!! I didn't mean to raise such a fuss, but if it were my family cemctay , I would want to know. And lets not Forget ..... Crystal Gayle , it is also her parents that are buied there. You would think that there would be some kind of program in every county that would help with keeping the cemetarys clear of trash and rubbish. I realy hope that your letter does some kind of help. gotta go .......will type you later!!!!!!!!! DONNA
Hi Candy, I think this must be done; thanks. This will make me feel a whole lot better; I can just imagine seeing Loretta on the TV and thinking of her families burial place being destroyed. I have an address to Loretta Lynn's manager somewhere. If I find it, I'll try to write her and let her know what's happening with her family cemetery. Hi Karen,I looked for John Bayes all i found was Abendego Bayes and Sarah
Haven't found the list online yet. That's why I'm checking to see if anyone has a copy to share. I don't know where Elijah Bayes and his wife are buried. I would like to know if Elijah had any brothers. I'm trying to find the siblings and parents of my gr-gr-grandfather, John Bayes, born in 1812 in Virginia, died in Johnson County, KY. (Married Margaret "Peggy" Webb) Thought Elijah could be a brother, since he was born around that time in VA, too. Does anyone know? ...Karen
Hi Candy, This is certainly a very sad statement to have Loretta Lynn to have made. I would hope that all of these relatives could get together and set up a fund for these family landmakers. I imagine generations to come will hear of the Coal Miner's Daughter, etc. Sarah Ann > I agree... to my knowledge, Herman is the only child who still lives in the > area. We share the same opinion; I sure hope most people are taking care of or seeing that the resting places of their loved ones a being cared for. We are leaving all of these cemeteries, etc for future generations. Sarah Ann You Wrote, Well famous or not I would at least keep the resting place of my parents or grandparents clean even if I had to hire someone to keep it clean. BUT.......... this is only my opinion. Donna Hall
I haven't posted this to the list for a while so I am hoping that there may be new genealogists out there with the answer. I am looking for info on any of the Cole families that were in Johnson County. There weren't to many of them. Aza that married Spencer Gibson in 1843, Chauncy that married Berry Dale in 1856, Tabitha that married Rueben Dale. There is also Mary Cole and Julia Cole. Any information at all will be greatly appreciated.
Is it on line? If not will be hard to do since i live in Fl.
In the Persimmon Ridge Jayne Cemetery, there are many Bayes family members, some with tombstones and a lot without. You might want to check there. Bill
I agree... to my knowledge, Herman is the only child who still lives in the area. In one of her interviews, Loretta said that since her mom died, she has no ties to Butcher Hollow anymore. Yes I am very sorry too, to have seen the Webb-Butcher Cemetary in such poor condition. My understanding is that Loretta's broter,Herman, takes care of it. But he is getting up there in age,and he also still runs the old grocrey store and he also runs the tours of the old home place. Tell me when does he have time for everything ? You would think that they would keep it cleaned up because prehaps the people who come to see the "home place" may want to see the cemetary also. Do you know if Margaret (Peggy) Rice Bayes Justice is buried there. She married first Elijah Bayes then Andrew Justice.
My Grandfather Matthew J. Ealey is burried in the Persimmon Ridge Jayne Cemetery. Behind his stone is a row of unmarked graves ( about10). I am told that these are the graves of Bayes family members. Does anyone know if there is a complete record somewhere of this cemetery? I believe that my Grandfather William Henry Bayes may be burried there also. Please help! Bill
Are the Bayes cemetery and Persimmon Ridge cemetery the same place. Many of the Bayes's are buried in Persimmon Ridge in unmarked graves. Bill
