    3. Bud, I am glad you brought that up. Volunteering can take form in many ways. Donations for equipment, lunch, garbage bags, etc. are very useful and much needed in cemetery projects. If anyone would like to make a donation, please let me know. Ann

    3. "GET BACK TO GENEALOGY"????? Discussion of cemeteries IS very much genealogy. WHINING about the conditions of cemeteries while sitting around waiting for someone else to do something about it is not. I have been organizing cemetery cleanup projects for the past two years in Johnson County. Seems everyone is quick to point out which cemeteries are in need of some TLC but when asked to volunteer to help clean it, no one has the time or gumption. You do not have to be famous to make a difference and a letter to Loretta Lynn's manager is certainly not a solution to the problem. And just for the record, the cemetery should be an historical site due to the age of the cemetery, not because it bears the ancestors of Loretta and Crystal. If that be the case, then so should the cemetery where Richard Thomas' grandparents are laid to rest. One of the reasons there are so many deteriorating cemeteries is because everyone waits for someone else to come along and do something about it. The media is not the answer for an overgrown cemetery. Gardening tools, rakes, chainsaws, weedkiller and a few interested people is all it takes to beautify a forgotten cemetery. Trust me on this one folks, I have spent many hours laboring in overgrown cemeteries. My proposal to this list is this....all those interested in getting the Butcher-Webb cemetery back to its original state contact me by private e-mail and we will get a crew together. If not, then the debate stops here. Ann Lemaster-Applegate Johnson CO. List Owner

    3. Patty, I don't know much about the archives, since I haven't been there in about 12 years, but I talked to someone recently who had been there. I'm told that you can take nothing into the research room except your research notebook or a laptop. All other belongings must be put in a locker outside the research room. So it is very important to have a list of topics and dates that you want to research, unless , of course, you do have a laptop. Janice

    2. OK, a little confused here about the "getting back to genealogy comment." Since when were cemeteries not considered genealogy based? Here I thought they had everything to do with genealogy. Dag, guess I could have saved myself a lot of time and effort, traipsing through all those cemeteries searching for my roots. Deanna Levito

    3. Dear Donna and Johnson Co. friends, Well said, I am leaving tomorrow morning for good old Kentucky; so I am going to unsubscribe for a few days. I am going to go ancestor hunting AGAIN and visit a few cemeteries along the way. My husband and I are taking the old weed eater, and garden tools and cutters along. If you see a slightly old (62 & 65) couple working away, give a yell. God Bless Sarah Ann

    3. Excuse me, but my statements weren't meant to sound mean. I was just really surprised at the condition of the cemetery. And ,yes the cemetery should be an historical site . I was mainly talking about the bull dozing that is going on up there , and the mess of it all. I just thought that Loretta might have a lttle pull in getting it cleaned up. And famous or not , there is eoungh family members that it shouldn't be in that shape, I know because my uncle,Gene Butcher, and Loretta are first cousins. Myself , I visit three family cemeteries every other weekend to mow , rake leaves , remove broken limbs , or anything else that needs to be done. Now if people did something for this cemetery , just think of all the others who would want something done to another one. where will all the time and money come from ? Well I guess I have enough dirt on my hands now. These is my last opinion on ANYTHING. So back to geneaology. Donna

    3. Dear Wendy, I am sorry if it sounded like I was "trashing" Loretta Lynn, believe me I didn't intend it that way. I admire both the of these ladies and the younger ones coming in to their own talents. I just feel that perhaps they have not gotten the information on the state of this cemetery. I do hope they do; but you pointed out important facts and I think your ideas are good in doing something possitive in taking care of these long forgotten cemeteries everywhere. Time to get back to genealogy, dear friends.
