    3. Ann, Thanks Ann. I see I did a better job this time. I am also slowly learning to be a better communicator. Please bear with me. In the mean time, you just keep up the good work. Just remember, you can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but their are always a few folks who just don't appreciate the sacrifices others make for them. Bill -----Original Message----- From: Ann Lemaster- Applegate [mailto:annapplegate@maysvilleky.net] Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 1999 1:06 PM To: KYJOHNSO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Cousin Bill, I am deeply touched by the posting I just read from you. I created this list so that we Johnson County researchers would have a place to come together to share our lines, find new cousins, swap stories and share a few laughs. I did not do it for personal gain or ego. I did it through my love for Johnson County and its heritage. I did it also because this is one thing I can do for the county and by that, I mean keep it alive. As long as we communicate on this list, talk about our ancestors, share their stories, realize their hardships, etc. , we are keeping their memory alive. We are not letting them be forgotten. I realize, at times, I let guidelines, rules and regulations overpower my heart, but without a certain amount of those, a list can run astray and never be brought back to the original origin. Which in a way can be compared with Rory Kennedy's (so called) documentary on Eastern Kentucky. A few comments here and there make me look like a heartless machine, which I am not. Rory's document makes Eastern Kentuckians look like idiots, which they are not. It is you Bill, that deserves the thanks here, not me!! And I apologize for not seeing the true meaning of your first posting! May this be the best Christmas ever for you and yours! 3. Betty, I guess I have the "double whammy" or perhaps "triple whammy". I have definite KY roots. Then a bunch of these KY "hill billys" moved on to Northwest AR (Winslow, Hazel Valley, Fayetteville) and settled, and then more moved to Oklahoma. A number of these folk moved on to CA and OR during the depression. I was born in CA. In my young years when the depression was still vivid in most memories many folks talked about "Oakies" and "Arkies" in less than pleasing terms. All I knew about my "Oakies" and "Arkies" were that they were tough, resilient, patriotic, hard working and loving people - - not to mention that my Mom was the best looking high school senior in the county. Well she took up with CA "prune picker" of German extraction, and well, you have me. An Oakie/Arkie/hill billy/kraut/bohemian. And just for the record, I haven't done too badly, despite this "burden" - - or as some of us may feel, proud heritage. Bill PS And I have it as a matter of family oral history, there just might be a little "native american" in there also with the English, Irish, Scots, Welsh, German, Bohemian, and French genes that flow in my veins. -----Original Message----- From: Betty J. My great grandmother married at 16 and was a widow at 30 with 3 children to raise. She made sure that all of her children, including her daughter received college educations and professional careers. My grandmother received a degree in science in 1908 - a time when few women were educated. 3. Jim, Thank you for understanding my meaning so clearly and saying it so much better. Bill -----Original Message----- From: Jim Hawes [mailto:JimHawes@ix.netcom.com] Sent: Friday, December 03, 1999 8:06 PM To: KYJOHNSO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Kentucky Ancestors I grew up being told that Ohio and Indiana sucked and the proof was without them Kentucky would fall down:/ Because of this I have always been thankful that the two were there. Having been in the hospitality industry in Kentucky where folks would come down from the North to enjoy our lakes and rivers, I can tell you that most respected our way of life and our lands. We are a more simple and directed people when compared to persons from other areas of this country. Drive down almost any road in any neighborhood or country lane and you will see clean ditches and mowed lawns. Our people can still laugh at the silly things we do without the useless posturing found elsewhere. I once had someone tell me they could tell by looking when they are in Kentucky. I asked how? The fellow from Indiana said: "When you see a $2,000.00 single wide trailer with a $600.00 pickup truck parked out front, a $21,000.00 bass boat on a trailer connected to that $600.00 truck and a 12 foot satellite dish in the front yard your in Kentucky." I thought about what he said for a moment, smiled and replied: "At least we have our priority's right!" We are taught an important lesson in life from our parents who learned the same lesson from our grandparents: Respect ourselves and others. >From this we learned to respect each person for who they were and not for what they had. This is something that has been mostly lost elsewhere and tears at the very fabric of our country. When a people or persons try to attack what we don't have its only because they can no longer recognize what they themselves have lost, the ability to respect. I am not angry but rather feel sorry for those who can not see past a feeble attempt at journalism bordering on sensationalism. My family took out their first land grant in Kentucky when they arrived from VA in 1784. Like so many other families, they remained in KY for a little less than 100 years and then migrated to many other areas of America. I have been in contact with literally hundreds of my distant cousins since I began my genealogical studies into my family. The one common trait I recognizing is the respect I received from each of them. Each of them like myself are bred from a better people who had their beginnings in that beautiful sometimes rugged place called Eastern Kentucky. 1. RE: EASTERN KENTUCKY
    2. Mattheis, William G
    3. Dear Cousin Ann, I apologize for not being a better communicator. I obviously did not send you the message I intended to. Now, as background, I have to fess up - - I am a "suit", and a "city suit" to boot. Maybe not one of the ones you were specifically referring to, but a "suit" none-the-less. How do I know that? Well in addition to being a Senior (highly placed and old, with emphasis on old) Executive, my father told me years ago that I was a "suit." He hasn't changed his mind about that since, and often speaks to me of the collective "You Suits" group that he obviously identifies me with. In our case however, it is his endearing way of describing the fact that he worked "blue collar" all his life, and although I have worked "white collar" for a good part of mine, I still know how to live my "non-suit" roots. Which to him means that I was taught how to plant, harvest, hunt, fish, build a fire, read a map, wire a house, fix a car, repair a toilet, run a lathe, cut and split firewood, etc. and still enjoy doing them. Now, I'm not sure how much my opion is worth in the scheme of things, but the message I was hoping to communicate (and obviously failed miserably to do) was that the "folk" [my grandmother used to say "folksies"] of Eastern Kentucky haven't a thing to be ashamed of, and that a "properly" raised and educated person would not be negatively influence by the documentary in question. I just wanted you to know that, although I am distant relative genetically and in miles, I respect all that the good FOLK of Eastern Kentucky stand for, and felt your courage and values were clearly protrayed at least to me. I was just hoping to assuage the anger and pain that I "heard" in your comments. Now, I am sharing this with all listerners because you are family and I love you, and I feel the need to show it by commenting on something that has been bothering me for a while. Now, I think we (the beneficiaries of this service to provide) owe you a serious debt of gratitude. While I know that most us correspondents feel the same, I have been "listening" to the many negative comments and complaints that some have made this past year that must have been very painful to you. I, for one, believe they are full of CRAP. First, if it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have this wonderful forum at all. Second, I haven't seen or heard any of them take the initiative to do the work required to provide the services they seem to think they are entitled to, and feel impowered to criticize. I applaud your initiative and energy, and praise you for your courage and unfailing service to us. I feel somewhat ashamed and remiss that I haven't said THANK YOU, THANK YOU, much sooner. I have learned so much sharing with you and others at this site, and feel that we all owe you a debt of gratitude for our ability to share. I know from our past correspondence (yours and mine) that our family lines cross in many places, and I want you to know I am totally proud of every gene I share with you - - it is obvious to me that they are very special. Ann, I wish you and yours the Blessed Christmas that you so richly deserve, and a Joyous New Year. Thank you so much for sharing so much.
