    3. Kim, I too have been thinking about future generations. I have been reading a lot about it and have gathered the following info from various sources: If you're planning on opening in 50 years, include letters, photos, newspaper clippings etc. Some have suggested photos of cars, house, family, genealogy, etc. Also including a letter to your great great grandchildren is often mentioned. Include the things you wished you knew about your ancestors. Price lists would also be interesting. If you're planning on opening longer than that, do not include newsprint. It will deteriorate and probably ruin the rest of the contents. I have also been told not to include any data on video, cd, etc. If you think back 50 years, we didn't have discs, cds, camcorders, etc. The "shelf life" has not been determined and technology advances so fast, they probably won't have the equipment to play it on. After all, my family doesn't own an 8 tract tape player or any form of movie projector or record player. Much to my disapointment, I also found that photos taken today will no longer last like those of 100 years ago due to the chemical process in making them. To make them last as long as possible, use acid & lignen free papers, protectors, adhesive, etc. Keep in the main floor of your home. Store albums upright and in the dark. Clean fingerprints off before storing them. Hope this helps! 1. Genealogy Christmas Eve
    2. I received this on the Pittsylvania County, Virginia List. Since it is completely about genealogy, I thought I'd pass it on. I love it. Bud Caudle Twas The Day Before Yesterday TWAS the day before yesterday and all through the branches, NOT a name to be found, none of my ancestors. THE Journals and Bibles were dusty and worn, WHY should we care, these kinfolk are gone. THE pictures of children and family, long ago dead, ARE scattered, crinkled, and crammed under beds. DAD in his chair, and I with a book, HAD just settled back to give the TV a look. WHEN out on the street there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter. ON the way to the window I tripped with a crash, I tore open the curtains and looked through the glass. THE sun in the sky was nowhere in sight, THE clouds were so gray, it could have been night. WHEN what to my wondering eyes should appear, THE Mailman with packages, letters and cards of good cheer. THE driver was grumbling while sorting his letters, I knew in a moment, things had to get better. THE size of one letter stood out from them all, A distant cousin was asking about family, one and all. THE names of Grandpa and Grandma, Great Grandparents all, NEXT came my Father, my Brother, and Uncle Paul. FROM cousins and uncles to aunts and nephews, NIECES and in-laws, just to name a few. SO through the many journals and photos, and stuff I possessed, MY search for my ancestors slowly progressed. WHILE up the family tree I gradually climbed, MY ancestors names, I was seeking to find. UPON that tree I have carved many a name, THE branches of which, will never be the same. THE tree is now filled with many I've found, BUT in the search for others, now I am bound. THE ancestors whose names, I have written with love, THE Lord has gathered to take to His Father above. WITH so many names yet to be carved on that tree, I have little time to waste on games and TV. GATHERING names, photos, histories and places, REQUIRES a lot of love, patience, and God's good graces. SOME were Farmers, Soldiers and such, Mothers and Fathers who struggled much. SOME were Settlers, who traveled far, some Adventures, who followed the stars. SOME were rich but most were poor, they came by ship, seeking more. SOME died young, others old, many their stories yet untold. I cried when I thought of those brothers and sisters, FOR I am who I am, thanks to my ancestors. MY family is but one branch on the Tree of Life, A tree that grew strong through toil and strife. ALONE, I'm just a bare twig or a stub, TOGETHER we build a Family Tree of Love (Written by Linnie Vanderford Poyneer one night after a long day of research)

    3. Hello list, After reading the "unidentified message" emails, I just have to put in my "two cents worth." First of all, the people on this list and the owner thereof, are some of the finest people I have ever been privileged to associate with. Second of all, "stupid is as stupid does," to coin a phrase from a certain well known movie. Have a safe and wonderful Christmas everyone and continue the friendliness and good work!!!! Gay Curtis

    1. Re: The future
    2. Kim: One of the nicest things I've seen to be left for generations to come was handed out by the celebrating couple at a 50th wedding anniversary. It was an album type thing or book if you will, just a Xerox copy, but very nice. It was put together by the couple themselves, no publisher or anything like that. It had several generations of pictures, all identified. It had a very nice genealogy in it. And it had (best of all) family stories handed down from several generations and up to the present generation. These stories, the real history of the family, are what I think made it so special. There were copies of birth, marriage, and death records where appropriate, and even some land records. A person could include whatever they would like to include, but should always include stories whether today's person thinks it is interesting or not. A few generations from now that story probably will be interesting. I found an old newspaper article one time about someone selling eggs - a lot of them. I sent the article to a descendant who had no idea the family had ever even had a chicken except to eat. Just some ideas. Good luck. Bud Caudle
