Hello Gang, Now, with the Christmas season here and 3 kids to play Santa for, I've been working 7 days a week for awhile so I'm a bit behind on e-mail and genealogy and just about everything. I have however been reading the posts whenever I can to see whats up. I'm now about 4 days behind. LOL This is sure an active list and I'm glad I subscribed. I recognize quite a few names from some other lists as well, and some of you folks have kindly sent me info. I descend from John Verazzano and Sarah Jane (Branham) Ward. Their daughter Mahala Ward Sturgell was my grandma. She was born and raised in Offutt, Johnson Co. Thats why I subscribed to this list. Hopefully I will have more time for research soon and can contribute instead of lurking, but for now I enjoy reading the posts. I thought I should introduce myself now seeing as there is a possibility some of us will be seeing each other in Johnson Co. I havn't finished reading all my e-mail so we'll see about whats gonna come of that! I was hoping to head up that way this spring or summer anyhow, and take a walk up the hill where John and Sarah Jane are buried up from the old home place. Maybe the timing will be right. Merry Christmas all! Living in Oklahoma, don't know if I could make it, but would try. Would be good if those who couldn't attend would send a print out of their Johnson County ties with possibly a short family history story. Here's just a few thoughts to lighten evryones hearts here at this joyous season. Merry Christmas to all of you out there on the list. And Here's hoping we can have peace on this earth thoughout the coming new year. May God richly bless all of you, my extended family. Bill Reed Can a first cousin, once removed, return? Cemetery: (n) A marble orchard not to be taken for granite. Crazy.... is a relative term in MY family. Genealogy: Chasing your own tale! Genealogy: It's all relative in the end anyway. Genealogy: Tracing yourself back to better people. I trace my family history so I will know who to blame. It's hard to be humble with ancestors like mine! Life takes it's toll. Have exact change ready! Searching for lost relatives? Win the Lottery! That's strange; half my ancestors are WOMEN! Do I even WANT ancestors? Some I found I wish I could lose. Every family tree has some sap in it. FLOOR: (n) The place for storing your priceless genealogy records. Friends come and go, but relatives tend to accumulate. Genealogists never die, they just lose their roots. Genealogy: A hay stack full of needles. It's the threads I need. Genealogy: Collecting dead relatives and sometimes a live cousin! Genealogy: Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living. Heredity: Everyone believes in it until their children act like fools! I looked at my family tree...there were two dogs using it. I think my family tree is a few branches short of full bloom. Life is lived forwards, but understood backwards. My ancestors are hiding in a witness protection program. My family tree is a few branches short! Research: What I'm doing, when I don't know what I'm doing. Take nothing but ancestors, leave nothing but records. Theory of relativity: If you go back far enough, we're all related.

Bill, In your list of "other surnames" have a Doss. In my husband's line I have an Esther or Hester Doss. She md 25 May 1808, Martin Felkins, Pulaski Co, KY. She was possibly d/o Joel Doss, it's not proven yet. Joel was (proven) s/o Zachariah Doss. I haven't done much research on this family, but have a couple of contacts who have given me some info. Do any of the names sound familiar to you? Betty.
Julie, it's my great-grandfather, John F. Davis. (Davis is almost as bad a name to look for as Smith and Jones!) But no connection to Eastern KY. As best I can tell, the family came from NC, through TN and into MO. I pick them up in Leavenworth Co, KS in 1860; at least John and his mother, Sarah. I'll find him yet, I'm not giving up. Thanks for asking. Merry Christmas! You are correct on the two room school Marilyn, I also attended that school. It was called the Concord School (I think) and it was at the mouth of Davis Branch. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marilyn Chesney <mchesney@pe.net> To: <KYJOHNSO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 18, 1999 3:27 AM Subject: Re: Early Kentucky Schools > I can only remember a two-room schoolhouse that was just outside Paintsville, though I think it previously had been a one-room school.
