Does anyone out there know how to contact Mrs. Cox. I would be happy to inquire about obtaining her permission for limited use of the information. Candy, I don't doubt you are right about the copyright surviving the death of the holder of that copyright but I can add just a bit of info. As I am sure that Mrs. Cox can be located in Lexington, KY, this would not apply to this case but I do know that in the case where the next-of-kin cannot be located, anyone can apply to the state for the copyrights to the work in question. The state in which the copyright holder lived can award that copyright to anyone who applies who can prove that they have made a genuine effort to find the next-of-kin. This will probably entail a fee levied by the state. DC ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Wow! This is enticing. Does anyone know the copyright situation on the East Kentuckian? Our fried Candy is putting census data on CDs for some of us. I'd love to have the East Kentuckian in my research files. Can it be put on CD without violating anyone's rights? That would be great? You would have to contact the widow of Clayton Cox to see if it would be okay to put all this information on a CD. You would have to tell her if this would be for your own use or if you plan on selling or giving the CD to other people. I don't have the url for copyright laws handy but I am sure someone on this list can supply that for you.
Never tried "fried Candy" but it sounds really good. Sorry, Bill. Thought it was rather cute. Needed a chuckle this morning. We knew what you meant! (darned keyboards) a fellow KY researcher.. ...Karen

Here is a little more information (this came from work, so the policy there is NO downloading and NO opening attachments for the next few weeks...) Mentioned is that the Worm. EXE (mentioned below) and Melissa are back. The Worm is annoying, Melissa could be deadly. They also quoted from Network World Fusion (a weekly publication) "saying that greeting cards are a major worry because they are prime candidates fro carrying viruses. The greetings also can cripple email servers because they are so large - up to 5M bytes each - and can easily broadcast around a network" The most popular are: Snowcraft 3.5 M bytes, Elfbowl.exe - 1.5M bytes, Xmas.exe - 1.1M bytes. I have heard a rumor (completely unproven) that Elfbowl has a virus that will be released on Christmas day. That however, is a rumor and may or may not be true. My husband purchased a new virus scanner for $30 and downloaded it from online. Unfortunately, it will only detect "old" viruses. There is no protection for new ones. My advice is to wait until after the new year to trade attachments of any kind to protect us all. Hello List! I just wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2000! I am officially off of the computer until the day after Christmas and wanted to send my best wished to everyone. thank you candy I didn't know this ----- Original Message ----- From: Candy Parent To: KYJOHNSO-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 1999 5:00 PM Subject: Viruses Please forgive this non-genealogy post, but it affects us all and I thought it important to share. This information comes from the head of the Technology Department in our corporation. He sent a two-page email to all in the company which (in brief) states that numerous sources have promised to unleash 500-1000 new viruses as part of their New Year's celebration. More than 30,000 threats have been logged by the FBI and other agencies. Because these are new viruses they are not yet all detectable by virus programs. Of particular concern are greeting cards. They warn of receiving viruses via friends who are unaware they are spreading them. The company is recommending that we back up everything, make sure our virus protection programs are updated and running and they ask us not to download anything or open any attachments (unless absolutely necessary) for the first few weeks of 2000 until updates for these new viruses can be created. I generally ignore messages such as this (many are untrue), but given the sources and documentation of this one, I thought I would share it. Again, I apologize for the nature of this post, but felt it important to keep us all informed, especially since we have seen viruses attach themselves to lists such as this one. Thumbs down on the new non Java chat. To be blunt, it sucks. One of my major grievances with it is that you MUST enter your e-mail address in order to log on. I do not like that at all... Please bear with me, I am still looking. What I am looking for is one that will be compatible to all, easy to use, and is private, not a room created in a huge chat forum. (I dont want much, do I..LOL) The one we have now is all of the above except compatible to all. I will keep you posted! Ann
I have enjoyed browsing through some of the websites that have been created by members of this list. I have found them to be both impressive and informative - way to go gang! I have not been able to look at any of them thoroughly as yet but still have managed to pick up bits of useful information for my family files. I do not have ancestors in common with most of the websites, however, our family members were probably "neighbors" to many of those families. Jim, I was looking at your Hawes website last night and found many interesting facts. Did not expect to find anything of particular interest in the information about "How Floyd County Was Formed" but was surprised to read at the end of the article that in 1884, the Legislature took a tract that stretched over the headwaters of Beaver Creek and parts of Perry, Letcher and Breathitt Counties and called it Knott County in honor of Proctor Knott the governor. It may be just a coincidence, but this is the same year that Proctor Knott McKenzie, my husband's grandfather, was born (1884). We had been told by our family that our P.K. (as he was known) was named for a traveling minister who held revivals in different communities throughout the year. We will never know who actually inspired his parents to give him that name, but it does raise another possibility. Interesting . . . Thanks everyone. I look forward to having more time to spend at my computer after the holidays. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! Sharon McKenzie Pleasant Hill, CA
Thanks, was getting reallly frustrated. I have a VERY old dinosaur of a computer and sometimes don't know if my problems stem from that or from the site Im trying to reach. The intersting thing about this is that the only page I can actually load is the one that would let me pay to join. Im sure it must be a coincidence...but is VERY frustrating. Ive never had a problem accessing the site before. Just curious to see if its my poor dinosaur of a computer of if others are having trouble....if you haven't tried the url is www.ancestry.com.
